Richie Edwards (Manics) guitar bit towards the end of Motorcycle Emptiness.

I always thought that Richie didn't contribute musically to Generation Terrorists. I know for a fact that for the early part of the bands fame he actually mimed guitar on stage as his contribution was lyrically only but the band wanted hime to be a visible presence in the band. I will stand corrected though.

The solo on Stairway To Heaven is the ultimate one I suppose, but there are many great lesser-known solo's, such as the one on Photograph by Def Leppard.

Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Clapton, Santana, Hendrix etc., were all absolutely fantastic. Here are 3 Northerners who are just as good in their own ways.

I love Southport born Ollie Halsall’s solos on Shouting In A Bucket Blues from the Album ‘June 1st 1974’. Ollie had great RnB, funk and rock skills but also pioneered fast legato playing from late 60s on. http://www.olliehalsall.co.uk/

Bradford born Allan Holdsworth developed legato playing to the ultimate. Check out Hazard Profile Part 1 (http://youtu.be/ncjrSCOVzAs?t=2m46s) from 1974 for an early example.

John McLaughlin (70 in January and from Doncaster!) solos stratospherically on many of his records here’s a bit of Shakti (http://youtu.be/3AzovMu-2LY) and an electric album track called Dawn (http://youtu.be/jBbhcwI6AGk)

jack white playing the solo to black math by the white stripes live, by no means the greatest but still great

or what about keith richards on sympathy for the devil

posted on behalf of my dad who left me on his account, but he probably wouldn't agree

he likes a good melodic understated solo like something by the edge

almost anything by jimi hendrix and i know its not a solo but the opening riff to cold turkey by john lennon can make your skin crawl, sympathy for the devil is great just for the guitars tone

got to have quite a few david gilmour's solos for pink floyd
mick ronson on bowie's hang onto yourself

i tend to go left field with solos, i'm not a fan of twenty minute solos, with the exception of a few, i like to hear someone make there guitar howl, or shimmer.

you can't just have the rock you gotta have the roll too

The Ronson solo that's always made me feel all funny is the one at the end of Moonage Daydream. It's not even extravagant and lengthy or anything, I just love it.

Moonage Daydream is a damn good song anyway (that intro ).

Bit of a thread revival of my own thread but I have grown very fond of the like 3 second solo towards the end of the Chillies Otherside. It needs to be about hundred times longer.

Oops sorry  Everyone? I thought George had done a recording playing solo.

He recorded a stunning acoustic demo version which was superior to the heavier version which made the White Album.

As he wrote While My Guitar.., he has performed it numerous times in solo concerts and also at the Concert For Bangladesh.

The acoustic version is available on Anthology 3. I first heard it in Abbey Road studio 2 in 1983 (when the studio was open to the public). It was and remains one of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.

If we are talking bass solos then Maxwell Murder by Rancid could never be beaten

Maxwell Murder (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bimNMiz250)

The whole bass track is awesome but if you can't cope with the screaming go to 58 seconds.

Just devine!

Edit: Just listened to your link - WOW!

Hardly a riff, more a scale (Am, Am/G, Am/F#, F) and has been used in numerous songs.

Harrison wrote While My Guitar.. In 1968. Chicago's brilliant 25 or 6 to 4 was released in 1970. Same scale (perhaps in different keys) but two classic songs.

I don't think any of us mentioned the great Bert Weedon who died today RIP.
Yet he was an inspiration to some of those that were included, and very popular in the sixties.

This is a nice tribute, one of many.
