View Full Version : Woodseats and the 21st Century
devil woman 01-02-2007, 23:37 What is Woodseats alll about then? Is it really stuck in the 1950's?This 'world's largest village' is all well and good but isn't it time to move on? why do the Cafe's (apart from the 3 Boys) all shut at two pm - it's not 1972 anymore!!!
rubydazzler 01-02-2007, 23:43 True, the Woodseats Cafe closes about 2.30 but Natalies doesn't close until 6 and their coffee is out of this world ...Open House is open until 4.30 and you get a bit of religion with your value for money snacks!
Is 3 Boys the latest incarnation of the one opposite Woodseats School? It seems to have a new name every time I pass it. You're not the new operator are you?
WallBuilder 01-02-2007, 23:46 Hang on the one by the Yorkshire Bank seems to stay open later than that and so does Open House the christian place. My friendds used to run the one by the bank when it was called Peters Pantry and after about 3pm when the mums all started to go across to the school they'd get very little trade and so decided late opening was a waste of time.
WallBuilder 01-02-2007, 23:51 Ruby beat me to it and as I thought that new coffee shop which Ruby is calling Natalies [there coffee is nice] was the three boys, I'll have to investigate further.
rubydazzler 02-02-2007, 00:23 Wall, I think the 3Boys is the one you mentioned belonged to your friends, it keeps changing its name. Natalies is the Turkish coffee shop. It actually says OYes on the main sign, but then it says Natalies underneath, so I'm not sure now which it is called :)
They've got a coffee machine in the HSBC now, which I think is to fortify customers waiting in their excessively long queues but you could probably nip in for a quick freebie and sit on their little red sofa until 4.30 mon-friday :D
Mr Goose 02-02-2007, 07:06 I had a very nice coffee in one of the Woodeats cafes at 4.00pm yesterday. I think it was the "Oyez" one.
1950's ? Woodseats has now moved on to about 1988!!
On a semi serious note, I have lived in Woodseats for about 4 years now and the pace of change is surprising.
- There even is a deli :)
but dirty Jack fultons has shut :(
rubydazzler 02-02-2007, 07:11 There's a deli? Where? Is it good ... tell me quickly :D
DancingDave 02-02-2007, 08:10 There is a Deli opposite the big tree, it used to be a bakers shop, its got some fantastic stuff in, but I guess a lot of it will be lost on most inhabitants, who only eat pie and chips. Its not the place thats stuck in the past, the place is great, but its the people !!!

Woodseats is a horrible place, its full of too many cars and buses, too many chavs.
There's a deli? Where? Is it good ... tell me quickly :D
Oh yeah, the deli looks ace, might pop in this weekend! Rubydazzler, where is this Oyez/Natalies place that does decent coffee?
rubydazzler 02-02-2007, 08:45 It's almost opposite the Chantry pub.
And you guys DancingDave and corkerswfc ...HOW VERY DARE YOU ... do you actually know anything about Woodseats .... :nono:
muddycoffee 02-02-2007, 08:58 There is a Deli opposite the big tree, it used to be a bakers shop, its got some fantastic stuff in, but I guess a lot of it will be lost on most inhabitants, who only eat pie and chips. Excuse me I only eat Paella, and the Blue room has a load of carrot munchers complaining about the foie gras that they sell.
When you say the local inhabitants only eat pie and chips I think you are confusing residents with tourists who come over to use the big tree and graze on the pie at phoenix opposite.
muddycoffee 02-02-2007, 08:59 Woodseats is a horrible place, its full of too many cars and buses, too many chavs.
But where do they come from to visit our shops?
that's right, places like your own GLEADLESS
devil woman 02-02-2007, 09:31 Great response to the Woodseats question, glad it's not just me then...It's a real shame there's nowhere decent to get drunk too! Apart from a quick shuffle with the pensioners at the bar in the Chantrey (The landlady there is lovely) everywhere else seems to have a dodgy chavvy edge to it. What the devil!

Woodseats chavvy? Surely chavvy areas are typified by shops such as Netto and Jack Fulton and having rough pubs, including a Wetherspoon's where you can start getting drunk from 10am.......

(Chavs) On my road there isn't a single person who walks about in a shell suit or drives a barry car. You often see them in woodseats but mostly they live elsewhere.
Woodseats is an area lively enough to support 5 (well 4 and a half pubs). I know several people who come here to drink but live in less prosperous districts, as well as some from more prosperous districts.
When you say there is nowhere decent to drink what are you after, Cocktails?
I agree there is no country pub, or sleepy seaside tavern, but it is a busy and extremely popular district. Mainly of terraced housing, and the pubs are exactly what I would expect for such a location. If you want something different you can venture further afield without much trouble. There are at least 15 pubs within 20 minutes walk of woodseats and they hold quite a variety.
Actually, this might go slightly O/T, but as much as i am loving woodseats after the month or so we've lived there, we do often wonder if there is an obvious niche for a decent real ale pub? Soooooo tempting!

There is no jack fulton at woodseats, it closed down, I think, because it wasn't used.
Wetherspoons opens much earlier than 10am for breakfasts.
You wouldn't critisise a licensed hotel for opening in the morning?
Besides Wetherspoons if full of elderly people in the AM. Having a quiet sit down, I wouldn't call that chavvy, I would call it civilised.
Chav shops in woodseats check : -
1) Netto - yes I concede this one
2) JJB sports - No
3) Halfords - No
4) Mcdonalds - No
5) Pound shops - No
6) southern fried chicken franchise - yep
Yes some cafes do shut at 2pm but some open at 7am for morning trade which isnt very 1950s is it.
Woodseats on the whole as kept up with the times some times the shops are too far ahead eg we had a frozen food shop (where the travel agents is oposite the carpet shop is now) in the 70s this closed because there wasnt enough people with freezers. Generaly woodseats is a good shoping centre and is up to date but it can only work if people shop there so we wont have the range of shops we used to have because of the super markets.
It used to be the case in woodseats that you could buy everything you wanted for your house and your general living on woodseats but not the house its self as there were no estate agents now there are lots of them but a lot of the other shops have gone.
muddycoffee 02-02-2007, 10:01 Actually, this might go slightly O/T, but as much as i am loving woodseats after the month or so we've lived there, we do often wonder if there is an obvious niche for a decent real ale pub? Soooooo tempting!
The nearest you will get to that is a wetherspoons because, the pub would be too busy if it were on the main drag. It would be an excellent idea for the Sheaf though. One way to make it successful.

I really like Woodseats now - but I agree with you. We need the Abbey pub to be redeveloped by the people who run the Hillsborough Barracks pub!
Still, it ROCKS* in the Chantrey of an evening
* :x

Actually, the abbey pub was a much classier place 10 years ago. Get rid of the SKy tvs and the heavy tobacco smoke and it would be a great boozer again.
At least half my wishes will come true in July.
Best pint of guinness on woodseats is still to be found at the abbey.

Good post
1. I agree with you- pub that has sign "Sky Sports on Giant Tv" = avoid
2. I will check out the guiness in the Abbey - I was drinking it last night in other Wooseats venues and it was patchy
Serendipity1 02-02-2007, 12:15 Why avoid pubs that have skysports in it!
Correct me if im wrong but dont pubs make more money from people going in for a pint and to watch the football then old fashioned pipe smokers supping real ale!
muddycoffee 02-02-2007, 12:24 Why avoid pubs that have skysports in it!

They might do.
I hate having distractions of TV screens in pubs. Especially in pubs like the abbey where in the old days in the tap room they had their big screen and all the football fans crowded in and had a great time.
Now they have a screen in the lounge too. Watching football is a minority activity, and many of us feel that it is an imposition that there is no pub in woodseats where we can have a pint without having a TV screen in view with blummin football on every single night.
duckweed 02-02-2007, 12:28 Not being a drinker I can't say about bars. I do know that Woodseats has a great fishmonger (practically an extinct species, a good greengrocer, and a hardware shop. If that's living in a time warp then great better than all shops being chainstore supermarket. Why is Nettos thought to be Chavland? Some of us don't have the money to shop elsewhere. That certainly doesn't make me a Chav. Great if you're rich enough to shop elsewhere but don't look down your nose at people like me.
Serendipity1 02-02-2007, 12:32 They might do.

Thats Understandable but i bet u change your tune when England are on the TV or the world cup is on.
Im sorry but theres always the Chantry on woodseats that dont have skysports! just that pet shop owner watching the TV with subtitles on at the edge of the bar. (which i once saw him fall off VERY FUNNY) lol

Actually I particularly hate england football games and the world cup. Coupled with the violence and childish behaviour many people insist on due to it.
And the chantrey might not have a big screen in operation any longer but they do have a small screen in the right hand corner when you go in.

Netto counts as a chav place because there is a snobbery among the poorest people in the poorest council estates about it. I have heard about this from some of my unwaged friends who live in nearby sink estates. Apparently you can be ridiculed or even beaten up for carrying something in a netto bag, and so some people use netto but take a carrier bag from other shops.
Having spent time in Germany where Netto is used by the wealthy as well, and you would be considered to be mentally ill to pay any more from a "fancy supermarket", I have no quarms about making good use of netto. Several times I have used a heavy duty netto bag to collect my shopping in sainsbury's.
dulcet69 02-02-2007, 13:34 and you live in Gleadless valley!
dear_tony 02-02-2007, 14:38 i like woodseats, i work there and its probably my fav place in sheffield. People are friendly and its nice to drive around there and go to the shops and the surrouding areas are nice as well like lowedges, gleadless, dronfield, norton, totley, dore.
Even in the chavvy places of sheffield its still nice! Blackstock gets a bad name but isnt that bad.
muddycoffee 02-02-2007, 14:41 and you live in Gleadless valley!
Who does?
I live in woodseats. :suspect:
Mr Goose 02-02-2007, 14:56 Reading this thread - there seems to be quite a large number of SF'ers in Woodseats

Indeed, have you never heard of the woodseats unofficial meets?
always very well attended.
Also woodseats is one of the largest districts in sheffield, so it is highly likely that a high number of forummers are from this district.
Serendipity1 02-02-2007, 15:33 Im from Woodseats And Proud of it!
Heeley tyke 03-02-2007, 00:36 I lived in Woodseats for the first 12 years of my life.
I attended Woodseats school and my grandparents had a chip shop on Chesterfield Road.
Later, after I passed the 11 plus exam in 1945, I went to High Storrs and six months after that, we moved to Meadowhead.
Woodseats was a good place to live in those days. There were several streets suitable for sledging in winter and Graves Park was a great place to explore.
It was virtually untouched by bombs during the war. Only a few fell in the vicinity. The war seemed to have passed us by in Woodseats.

Its also got to be the biggest "not bothered about" place in sheffield apart from the commuting problem then, im a sheffielder through and through but there is far too many hills round woodseats to be dealing with, thats why you get the not quite sure mob living there, there not poor and there not rich but think there big trying to belittle people who live on gleadless etc etc.

What's this chip on your shoulder about Gleadless Valley ? It's a great place to live and bring up your kids. So is Woodseats. As for Woodseats being "not bothered about" go down there sometime. I met a few mates from the Valley in Wetherspoons last week. There was no "them and us". As for the hills, corkerswfc, we live in Sheffield, how do you propose to avoid hills ? And have you ever tried walking up Blackstock Road in a high wind? Woodseats is a great place with good shops, public transport, pubs and, I might add, pedestrian crossings so people can actually do their shopping safely.
The comments about the abbey are correct I used to use it regular but when they put the dj on on a Sunday nigth I gave up. It went down when the landlord changed

Mona Lisa's @ Kitos is open on a Friday and Saturday lunchtimes, great menu, stop whineging Woodseats is great, at least you don't have to pary parking and even better if you're local walk like i do!
muddycoffee 04-02-2007, 12:51 The comments about the abbey are correct I used to use it regular but when they put the dj on on a Sunday nigth I gave up. It went down when the landlord changed
Indeed one of my neighbours was making an official complaint about them last year. They were playing loud music on a sunday nights into the small hours and you could hear it in bed. The police were called several times.
The management has changed a couple of times since.
Hopefully if they do the same this summer the new licensing laws will have a much more dramatic effect.
devil woman 04-02-2007, 16:33 By the devil, you lot really get your knickers in a knot about ol' Woodseats!! So much passion around and that's a devilishly good thing! So the pubs in the area aren't good and we'll just have to make do. A real ale pub would be a FANTASTIC, civilized thing, but tis not to be and endless trapes down to the Sheaf will have to suffice. I heard the other day that some chavs had been caught driving a stolen Netto lorry and are being sent down for robbing its contents - over £30 worth! Shocking!
What's 20ft long and smells of wee?
The queue at Netto.
Vrsaljko 04-02-2007, 16:55 Woodseats is a horrible place, its full of too many cars and buses, too many chavs.

Vrsaljko 04-02-2007, 17:01 surrouding areas are nice as well like lowedges, gleadless
Ok then. :gag:
I don't see what people have against Woodseats. It has decent shops, a few banks, good transport links, nice houses and plenty of greenery and parks.

devil woman 05-02-2007, 16:22 Roll on the next festival which is going to be held in July and going to be more music and art based. New blood, new energy, new ideas, new directions is making Woodseats the place to be! (But a decent pub would make me very happy.....)
MonkeyMatt 05-02-2007, 17:50 Indeed, have you never heard of the woodseats unofficial meets?

Mee meeee! I wanna go to an unofficial Woodseats meet, seeing as we've just moved here!
Having left here and come back the place has changed but its a nice place to live
maggidee 05-02-2007, 19:05 tell you what you have a top class indian the dilshad good food very smart staff and no one seems to light up every 10 seconds

Are you going to the Gleadless festival ? ;)
devil woman 06-02-2007, 10:47 The Gleadless festival? That one's passed me by up to now, so I reckon i won't be. Is it any good? Does it really exist? Sharrow Festival has to be the best around...

Sharrow Festival isn't so much a local fest. Just an excuse for various trendy lefties to show how clever they are!
devil woman 06-02-2007, 16:01 I'm pretty sure the people who live around there regard it as local! What's the Gleadless Festival like?
willow pan 21-02-2007, 12:41 Does any one know when the next woodseats festival is please?
Heeley tyke 21-02-2007, 14:43 Does any one know when the next woodseats festival is please?
In all honesty, I have never been aware of any previous festivals.
I saw a magazine published recently about Woodseats and it was very informative. I don't know if it is still going or not at the moment. There were photographs in it of Woodseats in the 30s and 40s that I found very nostalgic. My cousin was Queen Tulip one year when she went to Woodseats Baptist Church. That was in the very early 50s I think.
Applegrim 21-02-2007, 21:52 I can't remember exactly when the Woodseats festival was last year, but it reminded me of when we had Whit Monday walks in the park, the band started at Abbey lane school and came along Chesterfield Road till it got to Woodseats school, it was really a good feeling to know all our friends and neighbours cared enough to come out to participate in the festival, and even the weather was kind to us, I only hope that it increases in size this year and that all the residents come and make it even more special.
Twitcher 22-02-2007, 14:16 Does any one know when the next woodseats festival is please?
Active 8 magazine will have all the info nearer the time, that is if you live in S8......

Not stalking but I may come and say hello.
Ok then. :gag:
I don't see what people have against Woodseats. It has decent shops, a few banks, good transport links, nice houses and plenty of greenery and parks.
I agree. I love Woodseats, I would rather walk down Chesterfield Road than Blackstock Road any day of the week.
I was once invited to MC a charity quiz in a Firkins pub up Woodseats but my Dad wouldn't let me do it, he said Woodseats was too rough.

My thoughts exactly.
msbehavin 22-02-2007, 16:29 My thoughts exactly.
Am not saying there's owt wrong with Netherthorpe (as such) as I have worked there in a medical centre, but it just seemed a tad ironic...

1) I can assure you I have never invited you to one of my quizzes.
2) That is dad speak for I can't be bothered to drive you
But where do they come from to visit our shops?
that's right, places like your own GLEADLESS
Hey you!!
I live at Gleadless (well Charnock, same thing) lived at Woodseats 2.5 years ago and loved it.
Why did I move?????
1) I can assure you I have never invited you to one of my quizzes.
2) That is dad speak for I can't be bothered to drive you
1) It was a charity quiz for Oxfam back when I was working for their Campaigns office in the late 90s.
2) My Dad hates going to Pubs, he only goes cos I do.. And at the time he reckoned Firkins pubs were some of the worst.
