View Full Version : Hui Wei (Simply Chinese) opening on West Street
I've been told that the retail unit next to Whetherspoons on West Street (i.e. the old Glossop Road Bath House) is going to be opening as a place called "Simply Chinese". Not sure if it's going to be just a take-a-way, but the unit is quite large, so hopefully it will be another addition to the growing number of city centre restaurants. It would also appear that there is already a "Simply Chinese" on Wortley Rd, in High Green. If anyone knows the place then feel free to invite them to the forum to tell us more ;)
(PS. Technically it's on Glossop Road, but most people understand it to be West Street before you get to Hanover Way ;) ).
Greenback 05-10-2004, 14:40 There's a Simply Chinese in Dronfield, and a relatively new one in Chesterfield. Very modern-looking restaurants, at least from the outside (I've never eaten in them).

Were the old Glossop Road Baths understood to be on West Street too? ;)
There is one in High Green, they used to have the takeaway, then they purchased the Cart & Horses pub, thier restaurant at the back is called Simply Chinese, and they have good reports
Sandra Spice 05-10-2004, 17:46 I think I read somewhere (unless I dreamt it!) that it's going to be opening as a restaurant & you will be physically sitting where the old pool used to be. Looking forward to seeing it & eatiing there.
mr craig 05-10-2004, 19:25 It will have to be very good to get me to go there instead of East One.
LuckyHeather 05-10-2004, 20:43 I have eaten at the Dronfield one a few times and the food is excellent. We did think that the crispy beef lacked beef product but the menu now has a note saying the strips are very thinly sliced (almost non existent)
That was the only gripe, everything else is really good.
xx
Snakey_B 05-10-2004, 20:52 I read about it in that food and drink part in The Oh Ah Daily (sheffield) Star ,it is indeed going to be sit down meals and once again sitting in the old pool part. The Simply chain has one in chessie (old white swan pub) Dronfield (at the Rock pub) two in sheffield and he part owns a chinese in barnsley also but not under the simply title
SaxonLeigh 06-10-2004, 11:21 yes the simply chinese in the cart & horses is goooood the best chinese in high green, altho i have yet to try the new chinese over the road from SC which i have been told is better!

I've eaten in the one in Chesterfield, but only a lunchtime buffet.
The decor is very nice and the food wasn't at all bad.
Thumbs up from me! ;)
lexsexlexsex 15-10-2004, 15:54 A friend of mine worked in the simply chinese called 'the cave' [i think] and the chinesse he brought back from there was amzing. Really nice. Can't wait for the one to open near me
I was on the tram the other day and the new Ciniese is looks ready to open, is there a date for this? The name above the door was Wei h....? didn't have time to look at the name.

I have been yeah. It is very nicely fitted out, the booths are quite plush and the lighting atmosphere in the seating area is dynamic - slowly changing colours and intensity - overall very nice mood :) The prices are around £8 for a main dish and rice is on top at about £1.60. To be brutally honest I wasn't impressed with one of the mains we ordered and told our waiter so. The staff were extremely nice and in this case they took that one main off the bill (I hadn't eaten it either) with effusive apologies. The dim sum was made fresh and was nice though :)
Sandra Spice 06-12-2004, 21:32 Are you actually sitting then at what was the bottom of the old swimming baths? Can U tell - does it look sunken with steps down? It kind of intrigues me how they've done it.

Well if you know that's what it is you'll know that's where you're sitting but otherwise it just looks like you go down some steps into the main seating area. The bar is at the top where you walk in and then there is a drop down to the restaurant. It is definitely sunken with steps down though...about 4 feet at least I'd guess.
It's quite cool in the flats above as they have kept the original iron work rafters. Apparently from which they would drop a suspended dance floor over the pool!
I eat at the one on high green all the time, a couple of years ago the food went down hill for a good few month, the only bad thing about the place is the food is always cold if you have take away & they deliver, but apart from that it's really nice & not that expensive, but I bet the one in town will be.
Sandra Spice 08-12-2004, 22:28 Well I've just been. It wsa very nice both food & decor so I'll be going again. Martin Dawes, The Star restaurant critic was in so I guess he'll be reviewing it in next wednesdays Star.
holster100 24-01-2005, 19:05 I went on Saturday, and the food/service was excellent - the best Chinese I've been to in 10 years of living in Sheffield.
I'll definitely go again soon!
