View Full Version : Bai Hoi: Bad experience
Not sure if this is in the correct area but im sure if not it will be moved.
I wanted to let you all know who care to look at this, just how down right rude, nasty and intimidating one particular bouncer there made me, my girlfriend and friends of hers feel last Saturday night (02/10).
From chucking out time at 11, we were asked to drink up by a Pakistani bouncer (this is integral to the story) At 11:15 i returned from the loo's to see him stood over our table shouting at my girlfriend, her friend and her friends Husband (who's a sikh).
I said that we were allowed 20 mins to drink up by law and he kicked off even more. The place did have loads of other people in the place still. The bouncer disappeared and came back with 2 more bouncers. This was for 3 guys and 2 women (2 Dentists a Civil Servant and 2 Dental Hygienists!!)
It seems they are happy to take your money but as soon as time is called you can @**# off.
The bouncer in question paid particular attension to my Sikh friend and was very intimidating being surrounded by 3 bouncers and marched to the door.
Does anyone know if this place is owned by a brewery??
Disco_Cat 05-10-2004, 12:59 I think it's owned by the same people who own Revolution and they've launched just this one in Sheffield to see how well it does before putting them out nationwide.
Since this is a flagship type establishment the management should be very attentive to any criticism.
It's across the rd fron the Muse pub and Varsity an West St on the corner,,next to Creator hairdressers.
I've found in there the bouncers are indeed over keen on getting punters swept out as soon as the bar closes, but I've found that as long as you are sound with the bouncers when they come round, have a bit of a laugh with them and indicate you defintly intend to be out before the 20 minute legal leaway is up then they are normally return the favour of being civil...

johnjo it's fairly obvious that this would be the correct forum for your post:
Going out in Sheffield
Sheffield's restaurants, bars, clubs, etc. Sub Areas: Notices & Events
We are not here to tidy up around you...
...nevertheless I have indeed moved it on this occasion :|

While I appreciate that the main part of your story was the attitude/behaviour of the bouncer, I just wanted to point out that the law stipulates they can kick you out whenever they like...
HottyMcBuff 08-10-2004, 15:55 and you have got to stipulate to accumilate.... or something.... taxi!!
Its a good bar. Went there during day session and Stella was just £1.90. Cheaper than Wetherspoons! course, price goes up to £2.70 at 6pm. ho hum.
mr.blaze 10-10-2004, 17:57 Isn't it BIA HOI?
Anyway, I once had a bit of barney rubble with one of the bouncers there but everything got sorted. They also work the doors at Revolution. One of the bouncers that work there is about 18, as he was quite a few years below me in school.
IMO arguing with bouncers is never a good thing. When they say drink up drink up.

To true, its not worth the hassle.
The past couple of times i've been in Bia Hoi the bouncers have been very keen on checking people for I.D. Never seen them being agressive towards anyone tho, they've always seemed pretty freindly to me.

Pakistani????
Did he have a badge on saying I am from Pakistan on his coat or something?
Even then, they are known as Asians not Pakistani.
You should have accidentally droped your glasses on the floor to **** them off.

... while that's true they need to have reason for it.
Then can stop you coming in without giving a reason and they can refuse to serve you without giving a reason.
However once you're in a public house they must either allow the full drinking up time or eject you for a valid reason.
Sounds to me like this bouncer is just getting off on a powertrip.

If he is pakistani it's perfectly PC to call him Pakistani just as much as it is for someone to call me English.
I heard on the news the other day that it's no longer PC to call someone from pakistan or India (or that region of the globe) Asian anymore :o WFT is that about?
if they get caught with people in there after the 20minute drinking up time they get fined over £2000, maybe there was someone from the council watchin or something?
Yodameister 12-10-2004, 14:41 Even if there were, there are better and more effective methods of sorting things out than abusing your customers.
Treat everyone like that and you'll soon run out of them.
Law states that the MAXIMUM drinking up time is 20 minutes in that sort of establishment (its 30 minutes in a restaurant), so they can ask you to leave as soon as they want to by law. Of course when it comes to good customer practice, allowing someone to consume what they have legally just purchased at the bar at 10.59 is always a good idea.
Past experience tells me that if you can be arsed to wirte to the management, they are likely to pull the door staff up, on what is frankly customer unfriendly practices.
I've hear it isn't doing too well, except on the busy Friday & Saturday nights, but that might be due to the lack of support they receive from the parent company. Anyone else got more info?
bouncers grr they really get my goat

Wow you must be a VIP? All I get is a death stare and perhaps an "evening" - but certainly no fetching of my coat :suspect:
Andy_biahoi 14-10-2004, 18:44 I am writing as the manager of Bia Hoi, firstly to apologise for the behaviour of my door team, and also to offer some explanation as to why this may have happened.
Firstly, i do not condone any form of rudeness from any of my staff - either the door team or the bar staff - towards any persons on the premises. I appreciate the behaviour of door staff can at times be intimidating, and i welcome being alerted to this fact - as staff invariably behave differently when I am nearby. The doorman who i believe you are referring to no longer works at the premises due to other issues, so i hope that should you choose to return, the experience will not be repeated.
Secondly, in response to the issue of customers being asked to leave before the end of 20mins drinking up time, in a bar of capacity of 450 we are faced with a difficult job of trying to ensure that all customers are out of the premises at 11.20, as required by licensing law. As such, the door staff are encouraged to begin alerting customers as to the time at around 11.10 or 11.15, although they are instructed not to ask people to leave during this time. By doing this, hopefully customers will have finished their drinks by 11.20, when the door staff return to ask people to leave - as is required by law - thus avoiding the other potential customer service issue of customers having to discard drinks which they have paid for.
I hope this offers some explanation as to the principles of what the door staff were trying to achieve - although as i stated previously, I in no way condone rudeness towards customers, and apologise profusely if the behaviour of my staff was anything less than courteous.
I personnally appreciate any feedback about all aspects of the bar, and should you wish to contact me further regarding this or any other incident please do not hesitate to contact me - either by email to BiaHoi@v2net.co.uk or by phone - (0114) 279 9250.
Once again i offer my apologies
regards
Andy West
Carborundum 14-10-2004, 23:59 I used to go to Bia Hoi and found it quite pleasent and different - however I am starting to question the safeness of going out in Sheffield in general these days - rude and violent customers, young people, staff, bouncers, taxis and yes very pleased to take your money and charge you high prices - think I'll stay in in future with a nice bottle of wine and a video/telly/music/internet etc etc.
TheWatcher 15-10-2004, 02:54 we can all go out safe in the fact you'll be stopping in. Huzzah!
I've been to this bar twice, once was fine because i was with a group of girls, the other occasion however was quite different as i was the only girl with about 7 lads, the bouncers were'nt happy to start with and i'm sure if they had any valid reason to stop us entering the bar they would have.
Anyway the lads I were with started drinking alcohol, shock!and as they drank they became louder (as do we all!!) they then got chucked out for being loud, I waited for a few moments because as all of this was happening one of the lads had gone to the bar, and was not involved in any way with the loudness, he came back with his full pint spoke to me and then also got chucked out. Quite violently I may add, this I found discracful and have not been since, i do NOT see why we should have to put up with certain bouncers who are on 'power trips'. In other bars the bouncers are fantastic and realise that in there job they have to put up with 'merry' people! Shame some of them give the others a bad name!
Yodameister 18-10-2004, 14:22 Having been dragged there on Saturday I think the place is full of idiots (thats the punters not the staff) I suddenly have a lot more sympathy for the door staff there.
I think the problem is it just gets too packed and in those circumstances its very easy to get annoyed by little things, and obviously it is going to lead to people bumping into you constantly and very long waits at the bar which really doesn't help anything.
Carborundum 19-10-2004, 20:13 Well the simple solution is to stay away from this place then - its not like we are stuck for choice of bars in Sheffield will some quite empty at times !
Maybe once their takings drop and they cannot afford to pay these prima donna bouncers with attitude then they will change their tune ...
