Hi djash1000, no, flying out of Netherthorpe, nr Worksop (the home of Sheffield Aeroclub), dont know when Sheffield City Airport is shutting, its a shame though...I think nearly everywhere has its own airport apart fron Sheff'.

The airport management have written to those involved/based at the airport and say they are "considering the timing that the planning approval will be actioned". They say they will give as much prior notice as is practicable. However, in the past they doubled their pricing with 6 days notice and told anyone who didn't like it they could always leave, which many did of course. I doubt they will give everyone plenty of notice despite many people having their businesses there.

Gorgeous pictures even though, as someone terrified of flying, they made my tummy turn over just looking at them! Tell you what - I didn't like the look of that little notice on the controls entitled "Spin Recovery"!!!!!!!!!!!!

Could I ask how you got into flying and getting your licence.

What sort of cost and best place to go for lessons.

I've always fancied it but it seems so untouchable if you know what I mean.

The fact is that people who smoke and drink can give up and fly instead. A great many people have fancy cars whereas they could have bangers and fly.

It wil cost about £5000 in total and it takes most people about 18 months. However, less than half way through you get to fly by yourself, solo. It can be done much cheaper in the US but there is a lot of paperwork since 2001. Every airport inclusing Sheffield and Netherthorpe have flying schools and they all charge much the same.

Yes, Ray is well known at the club, nice fella

Re..getting into flying....it's basically as KenH stated. Realistically though, it could cost up to £7000 for your PPL (private pilot licence). Once you've got it..provided you keep your hours up (only 12 per year min) you've got it for life. There are medicals (every 2 years) and biennial competence checks. Your training includes about 7 or 8 exams and flight tests. You dont have to be a "brainbox"...its more to do with common sense.

I stopped drinking for a time, and put all my money into flying..The most amazing time is when after about 15 hours....(by then you've practiced take off/landings/circuits around the airfield) your instructor asks you to stop the aircraft on the taxi-way and says "right, i'm getting out...go and do it on your own............oh, and dont go and bend it".......YOUR FIRST SOLO....when you land (and after changing your underwear)....you have the thought of.."well even if I pack in tomorrow at least i can say i've flown an aeroplane". I got my PPL licence after 7 months of quite intensive training and now love it.

You can virtually go anywhere with the licence, people regularly go to France, Spain, Belgium etc. With a conversion course (and a few million in the bank :D ) you could fly a fighter Jet or even a Spitfire on the licence.

Its worth trying !! :)

Although IU am sure that Sheffair knows this, I thought I would just clarify this as it sounds a bit misleading. The 12 hours a year quoted is the minimum to stay current but you can not fly for a few years and then simply take a short test and get back in the air again.

If you are young and a fst learner then it shouldn't cost anything like £7,000. If you are old and a bit slow then it might cost more.

Once people get a licence then they can buy shares in an aircraft for a little as £2000 or can rent. An alternative to all of this is microlights, the modern ones look just like any other aircraft, which ends up being about half the price for both training and purchase.

So say I had my liscence and fancied an hour as the sun is out. How much would it cost?

It would, very generally, be in the range £50 - £150 depending on whether you own a share or you rent a high performance aircarft. A Cesspit at netherthorpe is £87 to rent for an hour. Microlighting is much cheaper and you are still flying. If you are going somewhere, then it is worth having something more expensive but much faster.

We have a nice little Cessna for work, I don't fly to often, it doesn't really agree with me, but when i have gone up (usually to 1000-2500ft) its so exciting and fun! It feels like you are so much higher than you are and everything on the ground is so tiny and flat, its weird!
Everyone should do it at least once :D
I wanna go in a helicopter next :D

Think I saw your plane flying over town during my lunch break near waitrose. Looked to be flying pretty low for a populated area. Good day for it though.. i've hardly seen a cloud all day. My dads a pilot and takes off from Netherthorpe ...he'll be gutted to have missed the good flying weather today.
