View Full Version : Father and toddler groups/gatherings
Anyone know of any groups for father and toddlers. My husband and I both work part time and he looks after are 2 yr old girl on a monday and tuesday. He was wondering if there are any places to meet up with other fathers and let are little girl play with other kids. Preferably in the Meersbrook area although he will have the car on occassions.
Sheffette 30-01-2007, 19:09 Does he go to the group at the pavilion in Meersbrook park? It's every morning Mon to Fri from 9.30am - 11.30am. I take my baby some mornings and there are quite a few dads who take their babies and toddlers. It varies from day to day but I went on Monday and there were dads in evidence! It's a £1 each session and there are drinks and snacks for the children and a coffee or tea for parents. From the times I've been I think a two-year-old would have great fun.
Hi - does anyone know of any father and toddler groups on a weds/thurs or fri pm?
Are based in s8 but anywhere in sheffield area
Thanks
Jellytots is father friendly, we have a couple of fathers who come down and one more who is thinking about it but certainly 2 days a week there is one other father. Plus various people's partner drop in at random. Wed 1- 3 in the city centre if that suits you and we do a good cuppa too :)
Thanks Zebra - will let my boyfriend know
cosywolf 02-02-2007, 22:18 Jellytots is definitely a friendly and not gender-biased playgroup, you'll like it there.
I am also aware that there is some kind of dad's group attached to the Children's Centres in South Sheffield, if you're wanting something more specific. Well, I say specific, but I'm a little the worse for wine (only a little, and it is a Friday night, lol), and I'm nowhere near all my notes and contacts...so I can't give you any details right now...but if you google Children's Centres/SureStart in South Sheffield, you may get it - with the new Children's Centres, you do not need to be living in a deprived area to benefit.
If you're interested and can't find anything, get back to me or try the Children's Information Service...again, the number is at work, but google it.
Good luck!
fox20thc 02-02-2007, 22:20 lol - a little worse for the wine.....

nowhere near my contact notes... lol
COSY! hello day off! :hihi: we can look after all the parents can't we, but lets leave the serious advice until after the wine glasses have been washed. ;)
cheers cosywolf - will do that
ps - wine thing sounding good!!!
cosywolf 02-02-2007, 22:44 Aww, come on , Fox...I did my best! I'm sure there were some good ideas in there somewhere. Sorry, madyogs, not the best introduction to me. I'm honestly a very sober, useful person...(all the rest of you, don't say anything!)

My lovely OH was saying yesterday that he really wishes there was some sort of dad and baby group run at the weekends, and try hard as I can I really can't see any. Well, that's not correct - there is one at Eccellsall church, but it's run 8.30 to 10.30 or something, right on baby nap time!
Anyone know of any groups for Dads + babies that meet at weekends, afternoons or over lunch?
Lucy-Lastic 23-09-2008, 12:41 There is one specifically for Dads and under 5's at St Thomas church in Crookes on a Saturday morning - same time as the Eccleshall one though Im afraid
Thanks Lisa. I know we shouldn't let the nap govern our lives, but to be honest I don't know of many babies Adam's age who don't nap at some point in the morning. AARRGGGHHH!!
RozeePozee 23-09-2008, 17:54 Kings in Nether Edge sometimes have dad's or family mornings on the weekend and isn't there Messy Church at Endcliffe Methodist Church monthly? Haven't been to either as toddler groups are a weekday thing for us.
sarahknowles 27-09-2008, 07:00 Why dont you start one???? Find a local place that is central and start one. Post on this page time, date and laces and see how much response you get. My OH would love to go to a baby/toddler group and meet new dads. There needs to be more groups around for dads. They get left out with things like that! We are based in Dinnington S25 BUT if you do decide to get a group up and running and you have alot of interest from dads out my way, i will get OH to start one this side of town IE ritherham and we can see how it all goes!!! MEAN US MUMMYS GET TIME ON OUR OWN TOO HAHAHAHA :)

Next one at Kings Centre is Oct 11th 10 a.m. - noon. Coffee etc.. provided as well as newspapers for dads and loads of baby and kid friendly activities, bouncy castle and all!!
Next Messy Church is Oct 25th 10 - 12 at Endcliffe Methodist - more for older toddlers and infant aged kids though.
Have you got a Link Magazine, if not, you should get hold of one, as all those events are usually listed in there.
x-GiGgLeS-x 28-09-2008, 13:15 Im sure my OH would love something like this too. I take our son to a mums group which is on a Friday and I enjoy going but my partner was saying theres no where for dads to take babies on weekends (because my partner works 5 days a week) and would love somewhere to go just for afew hours. Its a shame there isnt 1 that would be abit later than 8.30am as my little one has a little nap around this time too.
Could someone possibly try starting one up?
H,
Do you know if there is any dad + baby group during the week? My husband has just given up work to look after our little monster full-time. He feels too intimidated to go to regular mother-and-baby groups: I know they are friendly, they welcome dads, etc, but he just won't go. You know what men are like.
He would go to a group aimed at dads, though. Any ideas?
LouLounHarry 03-10-2008, 22:45 Hi there,
We'd advertised a dad's 'n' baby yoga class on a Saturday but got no takers! I also invite a male baby carer of mine to my baby massage and yoga class and he decided (without coming along) not to join us...
The ladies and babies are all lovely so no idea really why...
LL
treadlightly 04-10-2008, 17:23 LLH - I reckon those activities you mention are not the most dad-like things to do, and that may have been why they weren't goers. When I worked in a children's centre we had to work on Dad's involvement, and the most popular suggestions were activities which key into their interests more. Dads clubs with bacon sarnies and newspapers were fairly popular, but as a group of mainly women, we really did have to think out of the box, and chat to our oh's.
Pig2Pugs 05-10-2008, 15:31 Why do Dads get frowned upon in the first place at 'parent toddler' groups? Nowhere in the title does it say Mothers only. I get annoyed at this cos I get bloody lonley at times and being a single dad I thought these groups would be a good place to meet like minded single mothers as well making friends for me and my daughter, but through experience I jus get looked at or ignored. I'd welcome a dads group!

I know what you mean. I took my two daughters to a group last week (I'm a man BTW, last time I checked) and the "host" welcomed me to - quote the "mother and toddler group" and then asked me where their mother was, what I did for a living and so on.
I'm not being overly sensitive as she seemed to be a genuinely nice woman, but the fact is mums don't take their kids and get asked where their fathers are.
I know some of the posts on here are well meaning, but there's something hilarious about them. I mean, it appears that what men want from these groups are "a paper and a bacon buttie". Easily pleased, aren't we. ;)
(I would love to have a rant at the generalisations, but the truth is they're so bloody right).
Let's start a group - "Fathers for Justice at Toddlers Groups". - I'll bring the bacon.
steelerbabe 06-10-2008, 11:26 My husband has joined me when I have been to both Jelly tots and my local parent and child group. He really enjoyed Jelly's and am pretty sure that he would go again on his own. (there is another dad who goes regularly). I know that the OP wanted to know about weekend groups but there are a few dads asking about weekdays as well.
mbunting 06-10-2008, 13:33 There seems to be a general prejudice against dads by society in general.
There's the thought of being labelled a pedo because you change your daughter / son's nappy, or take them to the toilet, or cuddle them.
There's the funny looks you get in supermarkets ( like Saturday when steelerbabe was having her hair done ) - simply because I was wondering around and interacting with my daughter ( ok, gaga, boo, gee, aah etc.. ).
I felt as if I was being suspected of kidnapping her, yet if steelerbabe was with me, nobody would have looked, because I probably conformed to the "standard".
treadlightly 06-10-2008, 17:09 :help: My OH really needs something for Sunday mornings as I teach in my house in the mornings so he needs to be out. As the weather is worsening it is really tricky. All his friends are babyless so are all recovering from the night before on Sunday mornings. I am starting to feel a bit guilty about kicking him out each week! Anybody out there know of Sunday morning stuff. He went to playspace this week, but it is a real dear do there, so would prefer something that doesn't break the bank quite so much.

Well, the St Andrews hall is free Sunday mornings and Saturday afternoons. I am keen to get this up and running but kind of need to find out which time suits people better. It's work in progress!
Swimming perhaps?
treadlightly 08-10-2008, 09:29 My OH is off swimming @ the moment as he has been under the weather for months, but I reckon St Andrews would be great, Sunday AM - fab. keep us posted.:)

Well we made our debut at Creswick Street's Dad & me playgroup; and was made to feel VERY welcome.
Will be back again very soon!
Thanks!
nickycheese 05-05-2009, 13:28 Not an ‘official’ Dad’s Group as such; we are a small group of male parents who look after our pre-school children during the week. We arrange 'meet ups' at parks etc. or at our houses (if the weather's bad!), in and around the S10/S11 areas, for making / playing / park visiting / general fun. Currently our meet ups have tended to be on Tuesday mornings and Thursday afternoons, but other times may be arranged if there's interest.
If you'd like to get involved contact Mark on 2666448 or email: crispylalls@yahoo.co.uk
relaxedrach 15-05-2009, 09:01 I'm just wondering if there are any dads only baby groups? My OH would love to take our 3 month old out somewhere - ideally a sunday morning - and meet other dads. Anyone know of anywhere like this?
chickywiggle 15-05-2009, 10:21 creswick centre does a dad's group - either Saturday or Sunday morning....I think it's more for the dads then the babies :)
contact Hillsborough Children's Centre for more info...........or check out the parent and toddler megathread in this section.
beckelina 15-05-2009, 14:38 I think the SureStart at Sharrow does a Dads Drop In on Tuesdays and Saturday mornings - no exact details though sorry!
RozeePozee 16-05-2009, 17:36 I'll let my OH know. There seems to be such a dearth of things for father's to do in the area and they always look a bit like a duck out of water at the toddler groups.
RozeePozee 16-05-2009, 17:39 Again a bit vague on details - sorry - but I think there's a Dad's breakfast type meet at the weekend (bacon butties, newspapers and chat) I seem to recall at... ho hum, sorry I get vaguer as I type. I'm sure I saw the ad in Link magazine and it might have been at St Thomas' Church in Crookes... but it might not have been

duckweed 01-12-2009, 08:38 You could start your own group. I think there is a serious lack of provision for Dads to get together.
DeViL_WoMaN 01-12-2009, 09:19 I've seen some Dads at Jellytots, it's a very friendly group and you'd find yourself more than welcome to bring your son :D
busymum3 01-12-2009, 18:57 Hi I know that Firth Park and Shiregreen Surestart have a Dad's group think it's on a Thursday morning. If you pop into First Start in the park entrance they'll give you details.
PurplePea 02-12-2009, 18:37 There's a group of dads that meet up at various places - they've got a Google group, I think they call themselves "weekday dads". They're mentioned on one of the threads on here.

Architraved 03-12-2009, 08:02 There's a 'weekday dads' network that operates via e-mail to arrange to meet up and do various activities.
"Weekday Dads and children under 5 for play in the parks, games, activities, exploring and trips out. + occasionally going to the pub on an evening."
You can find it by going to http://groups.google.co.uk/group/wddads-sheffield?hl=en

If you did and are finding it difficult to get in touch with the group, then use the link posted above by Architraved, that will get you to the website. Or email us on wddads-sheffield@googlegroups.com
Looking forward to hearing from you.

riktking 06-01-2010, 08:21 hi
as a newish member of weekday dads, i can honestly say how great it is for both you as a dad and for your children. we dont just do the usual "playgroup/park" style activites, but also do social events (in the evenings) too, usually with a better attendance!!!
would seriously recommend joining there is something to do on every weekday so get involved!

Geezer Innit 10-03-2011, 20:50 Hello
Does anyone know if the Saturday groups at St Thomas' or Ecclesall Church are particularly religious?
They sound like fun groups but we are not a practicing Christian family, so I was just wondering if they would be appropriate for me and my children.
Thanks

I go to the St Thomas one and it's certainly not very religious at all. It's a good morning out with my son and the Sausage Sandwich goes down a treat. There is also a curry night every so often, which is always a winner.

Thanks! Sounds good, I'll give it a go.
Are there any gangs of dads that get together in the week? I'm finding a lot of groups meeting on Saturdays, and the occasional weekday meet but I'm after quite the opposite, I'm at home almost every day in the week with my daughter and with being an out-of-towner I don’t know many people in Sheffield or even within an hour’s travel so am spending a lot of time at home or doing the same thing day in day out (Weston park museum, botanical gardens etc) which as you can imagine is doing both mine and my daughters grey matter no good at all. The only real bit of excitement in our lives is a Wednesday morning when we go swimming for an hour and the weekend when her mum is off work.
Thanks
