well i wouldnt move to netheredge, i live there now and moving hopefully into my house end of this month/next month. Not just teenagers im afraid, have been a lot of robberies recently for a start, and also me and my partner were just walking along our road and got beaten up for no reason, no robbery, just beaten up, so its not the safest place in my experience, but everyones had different experiences.

I lived there for four years.. just moved out this week and very sad to go.. its a lovely area.. wherever you go there is bound to be crime of some sort. Nowhere is perfectly crime free.

I can vouch for the lack of burgulars round Nether Edge tho cos our back and front doors were often left unlocked and sometimes wide open while we were all in bed and even out of the house sometimes (dozy housemates.. not me!) and not once did we get anything stolen.. ;-)

I lived there for 6 years, I did like the place very much but was burgled 3 times, which I didn't like so much.

I think though ,through experience, that just having a burgular alarm manages to put them off as why bother with the house with the alarm as there are so many without. Touch wood, so far so good.

Apart from that I did enjoy living there, I have a lot of friends there and there are nice houses too.

Well, it's odd. One road differs from another. I have lived in Nether Edge for over 5 years and we have very much settled as a family here. If I felt in any way threatened or uncomfortable I would not still be here. (we live off empire road).

Never had a moments trouble:
car never been broken into,
only been burgled once (could easily have been avoided).
Our neighbours are very friendly (even had a leaving party for the family over the road)
Our kids play together in the street,
The local kids are polite (for the most part) to the adults (but are always effing and blinding at each other ) .
Good local ameneties within striking distance.
Active local community.
Finest Café in Sheffield (#9 Netheredge)
Best off licence in sheffield (oddbins emporium - abbeydale road)
Good bus access into town and the circular routes.
Very multicultural, mainly northern european, arab and asian - arabic, persian, dutch, french, swedish and urdu are all spoken here, to my knowledge.

I've lived in the avenues in Hull, Along the prom at southport, and in Solent City (the urban conurbation that used to be Portsmouth and Southampton) and none of them have been as pleasant or welcoming as this little corner of nether edge right here.

It would be going to far to say that I love the place, but I do love living here - and intend to continue doing so.

Although we were fortunate in buying our house in 99 when the prices were a bit more stable. Good friends have been priced out of the area and decided to choose a bigger house elsewhere instead of the postage stamp they could afford here. Part of the 'problem' is that a lot of the properties here are large enough to be converted into flats, and the landlords have deeper pockets than the homebuyers.

Because there are lots of british pakistani families in the area, every time there is a wedding you get a lot of firecrackers and street parades - we even had a scots piper this year!

Very very true.

I live a few streets away, have lived here for about 2 years but have been visiting friends here most of my life.

One street can literally be very different from the next. There are parts of Nether Edge I wouldn't like to live on and some parts that are very green and affluent. Where I live is middle of the road, never had any trouble at ALL - no hassle about the way I look (piercings/dreads/whatever) or anything.

Nice mix - cultural and social groups. My neighbour makes the most fantastic curries and we often get invited round

I Live just around the corner from Empire road also, and have never had any trouble... though fireworks are annoying at this time of year. Never seen or heard any trouble around here and have lived in the area for 15 years. I think the closer to Abbeydale Rd you go, the more you see gangs of youths, but that is on the very edge of Nether Edge.

i live just off empire road, and have lived here for 8 years, was ok at first, lived on machon bank and was wonderful, lovely neighbours, not once burgled, some of the kids were pretty awful round there though and did cause a few upsets to be honest. Now i live one street away and been burgled once, assaulted outside my house once and not very friendly neighbours, its actually a very lonely road, dont feel safe here at all, its best when your lookin at the houses, talk to the neighbours, theyll give you an idea of what its like on that particular road. Carterknowles really nice though :)

I was born and grew in Nether Edge, in fact I only left when I got married, 26 years ago. My parents have lived there for 48 years. And are still there. When I was a girl it was a lovely place to live. You had shops that catered for all of your needs, including a hardware shop that sold absolutely everything bar the kitchen sink! In fact you had a choice of 2 grocery shops, Ormes and Grafton & Burgens (anyone remember them?) There was a butcher, baker, chemist and vegetable shop. My mum could do the full weeks shop there without having to go into town.
All the people were friendly on our road (Byron Rd) and took care of each other. We used to take it in turns to have bonfire night in each others gardens (and fireworks were not set off early either!!) It was definitely more like a self contained village.
I think Nether Edge is very run down. Gone is the chemist, butcher (from what I can see the one there only sells wholesale) and the vegetable shop. the 2 grocery shops have been replaced by Jacksons who know how to charge!! Although you have an alternative with Pop's.
People move onto my parents road and never make themselves known to anyone. I think it is quite a rough area now and would not like to live there now. My parents certainly would not venture out at night to walk to the off license.
However I went to Carterknowle School and it was lovely. The area seems to be pretty much the same as it was then (which is not too many years since!!)

Blimey, I must live in a different Nether Edge to some people!!

Nether Edge was run down in the 80's and 90's when all the big houses were squats or bed sits and there was a big student population. Since then, however, most of the big houses have been renovated and families have moved back in. The students have more or less gone.

As for small shops closing down, that is surely due to the supermarkets and is happening everywhere. See how long the shops in Fulwood manage to compete now that Tesco has a foot in the door!

I've lived here 4 years and was in Hillsborough before that. Believe me, you'd rather walk round here at any time day or night than walk round Hillsborough centre when the pubs are in full flow! Plus, my front door isn't used as a toilet here which it was regularly in Hillsborough.

All areas have burglary problems. Apparently burglars are quite mobile these days and don't just burgle their next door neighbours.

Anyway, everyone has their opinion, and thats mine. I love it round here.

I would partially agree with mimicraze, about her particular road, there definitely seems to be an "atmosphere" on that road whenever I have gone along it....

However, on the whole, Nether Edge is a fantastic area; as Phanerothyme says, there is such diversity around here, of age, of faith, of language, of race, it's a real melting-pot. so colourful. Community spirit seems to be high. along the abbeydale road corridor, there are a multitude of shops.

I am fortunate, as I live at the top, or "posh-er" end of NE.
Where I am is very quiet, and leafy, it's 10 minutes "wheel" for me to the park (Endcliffe) or the lovely Botanical Gardens, and where I am I can be in the city centre in about ten minutes' wheel, too.

I am very happy to be round here.
I am happy here, the bit of NE I am in is so nice!

Anyone know what Wake Rd is like? It's parallel to Wath Rd. It seems like a nice road but any info would be appreciated in terms of crime problems etc

I have never left ther but recently there has been some serious crime there, but then again you get crime everywhere. Its a great place to live as its so close to town and all that kind of thing but depends what you want.

I live on wake road, and have done for 5 years. It's a really friendly street with very neighbourly neighbours (including us). Stuff that winds me up is cars coming and going late (quite a few taxi drivers live here) and firecrackers. But the kids are well behaved (for the most part), There's very little car crime, people do look out for each other etc.

mimicraze has had a bad experience of it, but I wouldn't go by her opinion alone, as I think she has been the victim of some particularly bad luck.

Kids play on the street, there is the odd burglary now and again, but because it tends to be busy almost 24hrs, there is less opportunity to slip in and out unnoticed.

In short, I'd say get yourself down here and pm me once you arrive and we'll introduce you!

i lived in Nether Edge for a year on one of the roads just up from Jacksons. I liked living there apart from the taxi drivers. the problem is that they never pick people up by ringing the doorbell they just beep their horns repeatly es[pecially if picking up their family. I do think it gets more dodgy toward abbeydale though. Also I don't think Pop's is safe i got hasseled by sleazy men in there several times. On the upside the cafe next to the laudrette is really nice and chilled.

I’ve lived in Wake Road on and off for 4 years, I’ve never been burgled or had my car broken into and it’s generally a very friendly area to live in. My only complaint would be the kids who drop litter all the time but the area is now cleaned every 3 weeks so it’s much less of a problem that it used to be.

I agree about the taxi drivers’ chronic inability to get out of their cars and ring the doorbell when picking someone up, they just sit there honking their horns until someone appears. I must disagree about Pop’s though, I go in there all the time and it’s one of the friendliest shops around, the prices are good and he’ll give you discount on wine or beer if you buy in bulk!

does it feel safe?

My teens aren't keen as they've been chased by a gang with weapons when all they were doing was walking to the shops.

Is this sort of thing unusual?

clearly teenagers may be targetted more than adults.

I have lived in Nether Edge S7 for almost 5 years and I must say the place is OK on the whole.

It does have a bohemian cosmopolitan feel to it - so I dont mind "soap dodgers and do-gooders" and yes Cafe #9 is a great cafe. Also I like Zed on the edge and Luna Rossa and the Broadie & Byron pubs - there are also lots of shops, restaurants on Abbeydale rd, some good pubs, off licence, dentist, laundrette, barbers - lots of bus routes to town, very handy for people without a car, and the new Virgin Active gym is quite near.

I am hopeful that the place is coming up a bit as yes a lot of students have moved out and lots of houses are being renovated to live in now that the "posher" places have stratospheric prices.
Even the old cinema is being re-used again.

I am not sure I would like to live in a "posher" area anyway as would be more burglaries.

Even the firework problem of former years seems to have abated a bit this year with the new laws.

- a choice between economic ghettos, chavsville gold, middle-of-nowhere or netheredge/haight-ashbury? Difficult decision, not.

Yes I swear I saw hippies walking round Nether Edge shops the other day - hanging around Zed on the Edge with their beads, colours and peace signs ...

Its also a place of bohemian artists - I hear ... and theres a sweet shop turned art gallery now ..

I used to live in the house next to Jacksons (white wall, graffitti...can't miss it!). Loved the area (still do) but we did have a few problems - car broken into several times, trouble with kids hanging around outside Jacksons (including bottles chucked over the wall into the garden, narrowly missing my newborn son...they got an ear-bashing and a half that day!) and of course the graffitti.

Of course, I did kinda pick possibly THE worst house in Nether Edge in terms of location :P

Ive lived in Netheredge all my life and haven't personally had any problems.

However, I must admit there appears to be quite a few occurances of muggings etc around the Carterknowle Road area... Not sure why...

I first moved to Nether Edge in 1993.
In those days 'Pops' supermarket was in existence - with the same owners it has today who always greet you with a pleasant 'how are you?' and it does seem heartfelt. Remember to ask how 'Pop' feels'. 'Zed's' was also there.
We also have a tradittional butchers, sandwich shop. gift shops and more.
After 22 years, a number of bands/countries/careers I'm back in Nether Edge. Why? Well - the Union Hotel (Gareth - the landlord was just a barman when I was - in my third incarnation - here) is one of the best and most 'open' pubs in Sheffield. It's quite legendary in an understated way.
Nether Edge - has - an edge. It is very multicultural. And we all get on just fine. Why? I don't know. Why other such communities in the UK don't get on? I don't know. We just get on. Fullstop. No need for a PhD thesis - this is just Nether Edge.
There is a socio-economic/ethinic cultural divide right at the lights by Nether Edge Road/Sheldon Road. From there upwards house prices rise and the level of intelligentsia/affluence raises dramatically - but the level of non-tolerance/ amalability remains (in the main) the same. Expect to be arning well to afford to live here though. On the flip side - don't expect to be wearing suit when you go out (although that's fine), anything that rocks your boat is fine.
Nether Edge has some kind of ethos. Hmm. Kind of a 'be who you are' ethos. Some people wil claim to be in Nether Edge when they live in Sharrow. That's fine. Its that kind of place. You want to be there - and when you are - its a nice, friendly, rather old fashioned in a very modern, eclectic, multi cultural way.
Please note - cars are getting broken into more often now. So take anything valuable out - we are targets here.
I'll keep calling this place my home for many years - even though I'm an Aussie from Sydney!!Move here and enjoy - we'll welcome you.

i live in carterknowle and i like it here, its close to my school too :)
My road is really friendly and ive never had any trouble, but my older brother apparently has, not quite sure why though...

Iv lived in a few houses in nether egde. I really liked it when i was really young, but when i moved back to sheffield i hated it and quite often got 'hassled' when i was going to the shop or somtething, so was glad when i moved away from there, some parts are better than others though :)

(only just realised how old this thread is.. sorry!!)
