I used to use Rotherham quite a lot to nip in and pay bills.(It's ten minutes from me) You could do everything you need to in just over an hour if your shop was a functional one (food- Tescos, bills, decent enough Boots and Marks&Spencers for any foodie treats and a few shops to pick up accessories so you didn't feel like you'd been shopping :hihi: ) However I think since M&S shut, I need to make a FURTHER trip to Parkgate so haven't been in donkeys.

As far as going out, it's not really my type of place so not been out there for at least four years.

Parkgate is quite good though.

I have to go to the Aurora Sports Ground fortnightly on Sundays to take my daughter to play hockey there for the South Yorkshire ladies. We drive there, leave her, then drive back to collect her later. It doesn't seem the kind of place I'd want to linger too long... :D

What day is it open? Every time I drive through the Town centre is desolate :) It did used to be quite a good night out, my mates and I did Friday nights regulary but that seemed to go downhill a bit. I don't know what it's like now

We went to the Parkgate Retail world in Rotherham the other week.. Decent sized Retail Park IMO, some good shops including a big PC World iirc... What happened to the Big Green Giant Toy shop they had there years ago though? That shop > everything, even Redgates in Sheff wasn't as good.

Its not all bad. I live there, lol

It has its nice areas & bad areas like everywhere I guess. The bonus is house prices are cheaper than Sheffield, & you get way more for you money. And if you choose the right area your sorted.

I find Rotherham a nice place to go for a Saturday afternoon hitting the shops! They have a good variety of different shops for everybodys needs! I also love Clfton Park (only a short walk from the centre) its nice and big for a nice walk and full of fun things to do for the kiddies!

It would be a nice little town if the powers that be could summon up the courage to rid the town of these chavs and hoodies that are everywhere.

Would not recommend staying too long in the Bus Station a right scary place again if the authorities stamped down on the youth nuisance there it would be OK.

I used to work for Cap Gemini on Aldwarke Lane. Walking half a mile every day down that road that runs alongside an open sewer didn't improve my opinion of Rotherham.

The centre was nice though.

I was born in Rotherham, well Rawmarsh to be exact, spent my first 19 years there. I went to Rotherham Tech and worked in Rotherham too. I didnt hesitate when it came to leaving and dont need to go back any more. If I had to live there I could. But it is like a strange place to me now, I just dont know it anymore.

Rotherham (MBC) have certainly lost the plot.

They have very hurriedly put in place all the things that they thinl they ought to have, but no real thought has gone into the planning. Major streets blocked off as pedestrianised block paved, Car access is terrible, and as such everyone has abandoned the shops in favour of out of town developments like parkgate, meadowhell, and the yorkshire outlet.

The problem is, the council as a whole hate admitting they ****ed up, so the block paving stays as everything else goes. Money generally arrives via private vehicle, so rapidly the town is becoming a ghetto full of unemployed chav shoplifters and pissheads. Who wants to walk round that .... in a word no-one.

Weekend nights sees it transformed into south yorkshires answer to whitley bay, many dodhy bars, frequented by even dodgier clientele, all chasing fat chav birds who'll do em over a market stall for a couple of breezers. Terrible but true.

Compare it with the vibrant town I grew up in and there is no comparison.

In conclusion, its died and the last to leave should turn out the lights.

Lived there for about 13 years - in Bramley. I liked it in the early 90s, the town centre was reasonable, but is now shut! :hihi: Our bus services kept disappearing, and the level of the protests against running the tram to Hellaby convinced me that most people who live there don't want any changes. :suspect: One memory is when my kids, who'd come home one Christmas from uni/working away, went into one of the pubs in the village. They were asked by some of the young locals why they didn't live at home - as in 'why would you want to leave Bramley/Rotherham?' Nuff said.

As someone who has lived in Rotherham all his life and seen it die i would wholeheartedly agree with the majority of the above.

RMBC did a great thing to try and get customers back into roherham at weekends (god knows why, unless you want banks, pound shops, charity shops or mobile phone shops) by intorducing free parking on saturday to try and combat Retail world and M Hell.

So what do they do when it is coming up to christmas and the shops should be getting busier and more people would be out shopping.... yep they put the charges back on! nice on RMBC, try telling people as well if you are going to start charging again instead of putting a little yellow sign on the machine.

junctions can be both ways can't they?

LibertyBell
30-01-2007, 12:54
I think people are confusing Rotherham Borough with the town centre. the borough is twice the size of sheffield with half the population so there's certainly plenty of room to move around.

The centre has certainly suffered and although there are some nice buildings, they are mainly filled with burger bars, banks, charity shops, amusement arcades, phone shops, cash cheque shops and ...oh yes Boots. Evening at weekends are truly awful but no worse than most of Sheffield IMO. the problem with Rotherham Centre is that there is no sense at all of being a cosmopolitan town with a range of entertainment options. Its boozed up cattle markets or nothing.

The whole borough does not have any common characteristic - being so big it is a conglomerate of loads of villages and small towns with their own character and local identity. Some very poor, others not.

As for the council, they are one of the best performing in the country and have made huge strides in improving efficiency and have won several national awards.

Don't forget Rotherham as a whole has suffered probably more than Sheffield from the demise of heavy industry especially mining and had to face the fact that it is one of europe's poorest areas and uniutl recently got the highest rate of financial support from the EU. What a travesty for this once fine and vibrant place.

Come on though - why not support our South Yorkshire comrades and hope for the recovery of the town and borough, instead of slagging them and their town off?

Brunette

Indeed junctions do go both ways, but when you add in direction (ie South) it kind of specifies a starting point!

For J41 to be South I would need to be in Leeds - and who wants to do that?? :gag: And there being "no need" for it beyond that would be..Sheffield!

See my confusion?? :loopy:

Rotherham Borough is really nice and has some great parks, villages and countryside, but unfortunately the town is the only big let down. It used to be a vibrant place, but like Sheffield suffered greatly when that evil Meadowhell opened it's doors for trading!!

I agree with Liberty though, there's more to South Yorkshire than Sheffield and it could do with your support!!

I was born in Sheffield and lived there till I was 11 now I live in Rotherham I think the best way for me to describe it is a town with some fantastic areas, great parks and woodland but its a bit like that Crazy Auntie that secretly you love to bits but you tell your mates you dont know her lol. I love Rotherham but if anyone asks from outside of South Yorkshire I just say I am from Sheffield to save all the scrubber jokes etc.

I have only been to Whiston once - my brother had his wedding reception in the big tythe barn there. We parked on the road nearby, and halfway through the speeches we had to go out as someone had gone along the road breaking into every car, smashing our rear windscreens and stealing my change of clothes :( They had smashed 4 cars of wedding guests.

Not made me want to go back really :(

I live in Sheffield and work in Rotherham. I have to say I really like Rotherham. Yes there are horrible areas, and lovely areas, but can't that description match Sheffield as well?

A lot of the people I work with live in the Greasbrough/Wingfield/ Munsbrough area, and everybody seems to know everybody and their second cousin twice removed. It's a very close knit community.

I worked in Rotherham on and off a good few years ago, I didn't like the town centre then so god knows what it's like now. Rotherham has some good and really crap districts, a bit like anywhere else really.

If I were to compare it to Sheffield my first impession was that Rotherham folk are a lot more knowledgeable about the entirety of their town than Sheffield folk are about their city. I like the way that the so called better districts of Sheffield are in the main joined together unlike Rotherham where you can leave a nice area and within minutes be in a poor area, Wickersley and Sunnyside are a good example.

The selling point of south west Sheffield for me is it's close proximity to the Peak National Park whereas Rotherham has nothing comparable to offer. For lovers of Meadowhall it is more convenient to most Rotherham folk than to a large amount of Sheffield folk, also the motorways are far easier to get to from Rotherham.

So for me it's an easy decision in that thr Peak National Park beats the hell out of easy access to Meadowhall and the motorways.

I'm really sorry to hear that Rotherham has gone down so much. I started my working life there in 1959. It was a vibrant town - cinemas galore, nice shops, and when I was old enough - nice pubs. Saw a few stage shows at the Essoldo. Went up Masbro' to see the floodlights at Millmoor when they were first tried out - going to the old Statutes Fair where the police station now is - watching 'Musical Marie' at the old Cinema House when she was doing her marathon piano playing - going in Cantors in Effingham Street to hear all the latest records being played by the lady who eventually opened The Sound of Music in Howard Street. Having my lunch in the Whitehall Cafe and The Gate Cafe. I stood gawping at the burnt out Woolworths. Happy memories of my then favourite singer - Marion Ryan, when she opened JAX in College Street. I loved riding on the 'Trackie' Buses too - so smooth, much better than the Sheffield Tramcars. Sad memories of a work colleague losing his seven years old son. I also saw a lorry lose control as it approached the red traffic light at the bottom of Doncaster Gate. A lady and a small boy lost their lives because of this. It was a Friday morning. It preyed on me for ages. Eventually I walked out of the job as I had wanted to leave for some time, but my parents were against it. In those days you had to do as you were told. The wonderful feeling when I left the premises for the last time, knowing I would never return. I was 19 and had been getting home from that place at 8-8.30 some Saturday nights. I had to make up for lost time, and I did. I realise that it was the wrong way to leave, but that it was the best thing I ever did for myself. I never regretted it for one second. Time has told it was the right thing to do. Rotherham itself will always hold memories for me, and I sincerely hope things do pick up soon.

Rotherham Town Centre is nice.

However, the Interchange is horibble. Although it has nice waiting areas and comfy seats, it's underground, and the sound of the buses echo all around - same with Doncaster Frenchgate Interchange as well. Why couldn't they have taken a leaf out of Sheffield and Meadowhall's Interchanges? (There's not much point knocking them down and starting again though!)

But unlike Doncaster, Sheffield and Rotherham Interchanges dont have the advantage of having theres added onto a big shopping centre (excluding Meadowhall). And also, its only dark in the bus lanes of Doncaster, the waiting areas are nice and bright all thanks to the magnificant invention that is the lightbulb!

Rotherham is small town that has re-generated quite well and fast unlike Sheffield. Rotherhams council is clearly putting Sheffields council to shame and the only thing that goes against Rotherham is its size and chavs. 20 years ago, if you was of a ethnic minority it was a serious no go area, now it has become very multi cultural and vibrant.

Rotherham itself will always hold memories for me, and I sincerely hope things do pick up soon.

going in Cantors in Effingham Street to hear all the latest records being played by the lady who eventually opened The Sound of Music in Howard Street

That was my late Mother in Law.

She was a lovely lady. She knew very well that we hadn't the money to buy the records, but that did not stop her from playing them for us. When she had The Sound of Music, I bought a Four Tops LP from her and I still have it. Did she live in Maltby?

I always wondered why people in Rotherham had long necks until someone explained that it is becasue they spend all their time trying to look at what's happening in Sheffield :D :D

Come on express your feelings and lets start a debate off, what do you think about rotherham?...

i think it has a bus station.

I believe their twon motto is "Rotherham - adequate toilet facilaties in the town centre".

I guess that says it all.

well Rotherham town centre is now Retail World according to most people, and it is now getting better than Meadowhall their is soon to be the massive extention (right over to the A6123) and the new retail park on the left of the main road near the Burger King drive through.

I'm born and raised in rotherham but moved to sheffield because rotherham has gone down hill so badly. The town centre contains nothing but banks, pound shops and charity shops and you take your life in your hands walking through the centre if your a girl because of large groups of asylum seekers or vagrants wailing obsenities at you!! Parkgate is ok for shopping but Sheffield is starting to get its act together and offer a more diverse array of retail outlets/bars/restaurants than it used to have. No contest - Rotherham might always be home but I'm sticking with Sheff.

She lived in Ravenfield/Wickersley. You must remember my missus then, she worked in the sound of music too.

I remember your missus very well!

The lovely Margaret.

Also remember her Mum & Dad (Mr & Mrs Charles) and the lovely Jean.

I used to work with them over 30 years ago. From about 1972 The Sound of Music was almost a religion to me. My mates went to the match and I went buying records. Then around '75 - '78 I Sold Records for Mr & Mrs Charles on the Rotherham Market.

A Dream Saturday job for a young vinyl junkie!

Please Remind me to Margaret.

The names Sean... from the Thurcroft area!

Just joined this forum purely to make this post - as I was googling 'Sound Of Music' Rotherham... and here I am!

Think I'll stick around and see what else is of interest!

Got to say, Rotherham has gone downhill badly in the past few years. I just dont feel happy or safe while there, it just depresses me to be quite frank.

Sheffield is no diamond but there are very few cities that Ive been to which I prefer to Sheffield.

Once the 'chav' phase dies out (which it will) a big improvment will be seen in both places.

Amazing that Middlesbrough came out top in the list of worst towns in Britain.
Hard to imagine anywhere worse than Rotherham town centre.
What a dump!

Yes, they're very good at that - right across the borough - including roundabouts etc. I think I've seen one at Wickersley featuring an old wooden farm cart or something as part of the display. :)

I think a few of the displays are from the mines, there is the wheel that lowered the men into the ground and a section of the old paddy train around i think.

I was born in Rotherham and lived there for about 25 years and I think it is a lovely place. There is no where in Rotherham I would be overly nervous to walk through although I can't say the same for Sheffield.....but I do like Sheffield too, which is where I live now. I think it has been tough for Rotherham with its loss of industry and due to being a town I would guess the council gets less money than Sheffield council so it will take longer for it to regenerate. Until recently my dad was a member of the RMBC and he worked very hard but it's a thankless job and people all have their opinions but I doubt they could do any better.

Like Sheffield, most of Rotherham is full of rubbish, but areas like Wickersley are really nice.

I'd put it third in a league of South Yorkshire:

Sheffield
Doncaster
Rotherham
Barnsley
