... I saw it this afternoon... Quite disturbing actually, but it stood out from the lot. It just made me think how could a "normal person" ie( not a psycho) could think of such an elaborate plot.
I dont really know what to think of those type of films, could they incite to more crime and violence in the world??

I write short stories and scripts and sometimes I surprise myself with what my characters get up to. From what I've seen / heard of 'Saw' I doubt it will be a film I see - I find such films difficult to watch - but in terms of how 'normal people' think up such plots I may be able to shine a little light on the subject.

For me personally there's a 'disconnect' between me and what I write. I have written scenes that have upset me to some degree, but I recognise them as portraying behaviours and attitudes that the character I'm writing about would show.

British horror writer Ramsay Campbell once wrote a story in which he explored the idea that what you read about in a story you subconciously wanted to happen; not a viewpoint that I agree with but it made for an interesting if scary story.

I have a script in which one of the minor characters exhibited a 'thing' for vicarious sadism - she enjoyed seeing her boyfriend inflict pain on others. I've no idea where this came from but the character started exhibiting this behaviour as I wrote and I just let it happen. (I know it sounds weird - trust me, that's often how writing works!!)

I DO occasionally write scenes where I inflict discomfort or harm on characters who remind me of people who've upset me in the past. I suppose it's a sort of catharsis - but I also find there are places where I couldn't take a character. I guess I'm a bit soft.... Steven King has great skill at placing characters in situations where 'extreme events' take place - 'Gerald's Game', 'Misery' for example.

I'm not sure whether these films and stories incite violence or crime; I can watch 'Ocean's 11' without having an urge to rob casinos, and also read a story like King's 'Dolan's Cadillac' without wishing to bury a gangster and his cadillac in the Nevada desert. However, I won't watch some films - particularly ones showing a large amount of what I call 'visceral' horror - because gore repels rather than scares or challenges me.

I think that anyone who is influenced by such things in a 'bad' way - who goes off and acts out what they see - is unbalanced anyway and would perform these acts at some point without any provocation. The worst that might be said is that seeing slaughter indulged in by a character in a film might validate his or her own feelings, rather than stimulate these feelings.

It's an interesting issue - as a practising author and screenwriter the effects of what I write on people - good or bad - are very important to me. I could probably think up something along the lines of 'Saw' but wouldn't feel comfortable about actually writing it down, primarily because it would upset me too much rather than any possible bad behavioural effect on other people.

Yeah...I'd second that. Tis a bit gory but the story is good. The cruel streak in me is tempted to give away the ending but then again maybe I shouldn't....I defy anyone to guess before it happens!

Good to meet you Mimi btw.

There was 20 minutes or so where it got a bit cheesy which was a shame but all in all it's a great film!!

which is a relief considering the last load of films i've seen at the cinema have been really crap i.e chronicles of riddick, the village, open water, hellboy
