We have three cats one of which has recently started peeing all over the house. No idea why she has suddenly started doing it, but have tried all sorts to stop her. We have a cat flap which she has used to go out fine for years , and also tried putting a litter tray down which she seems not to want to use . Starting to get pretty fed up cleaning up after her and dont want to get rid of her...anyone got any suggestions:
a how to stop her
b whats the best way to get rid of the smell

any help would be really appreciated.

Ours is the same, he is 19 and the past year can't seem to hold it in overnight. We can't leave him out at night as he fights. Old age I suppose, although ours uses a litter tray with newspaper in it!

I wish that was the case, however the culprit in question isnt our oldest ( around 17 we think ) but only 3 years old, so cant imagine its a medical problem. Also she doesnt go randomly but picks the same three spots so can only assume its deliberate behaviour not because she cant help it.

have you tried putting kitchen foil where she pees? They usually don't like that.
Getting rid of the smell is hard, whatever you do, don't use bleach as it attracts them.
If she pees at the same spots, it could be because the smell is still there indeed.
A detergent like Dettol should work.

I bought an aerosol for pet odours from Wilkinsons. Its a foam which evaporates and takes away the smell. Made by Glade I think!

I think you should get her checked out at the vets- there are a few things that really could do with excluding before you assume that it's her being naughty, including feline lower urinary tract syndrome, cystitis and bladder stones.

If and when you have ruled out other causes, then you can think about ways to

a Stop her weeing
b Stop the smell

As far as stopping the smell goes- acquire a steam cleaner cos the high temperature breaks down the smell molecules (and in the mean time wash with a dilute solution of biological washing powder).

We have a similar problem, and it has cost us loads for a new carpet etc. I tried allsorts for the smell, and then I found a product called 'Simple solution' They make one for cats & dog smells and it is fantastic. I got it from pets at home, but I think most pet stores will stock it. It comes in a white bottle with yellow label. I would recommend it to anyone.

tried the kitchen foil, she just peeed on top of it ! , washing powder sort of works but makes a right mess, will try the simple solution....anything that helps.
Yes i have considered the vets, in fact asked but they seemed to think that if it wasnt indescriminate that its likely to be behavioural. however if she carries on i'll take her to be checked out.

The reason that I'm suggesting it is because my Merlin has FLUTD and when she's not had enough of the food that controls it, she starts scent marking and weeing.

She's had it her whole adult life, and apart from during the couple of bouts of cystitis that she suffered before the FLUTD was diagnosed, it has been totally controlled by a prescription diet. The weeing is a useful diagnostic for me- when she starts I know that she's not feeling very well.

given med's advice, and comparing this to your vet's advice, I'd be rather tempted to try another vet :?

I agree...my Zippy does this, is she weeing or spraying?? ( i thought Zippy was weeing for a long time but in fact it is him spraying specific areas)

Ok i'm no cat expert here but do have 3 and have looked into this. They do this when they are stressed, feel insecure, have a change in the house ie furniture moved, new arrival etc

I've got a FELIWAY diffuser, also do it in a spray with mimicks pheromones produced by cats mothers when they were born (think thats it anyway) and makes them feel safe, secure and happy.
The spray -spray on the areas the cat uses the most and where spraying
The diffuser plug in near where it is happening and leave on constantly, it lasts for 1 month...

It's worked for me.
Before this i put biological washing powder down and bought a cat odour neurtaliser spray which did help.

Touch wood, Zippy hasn't done it since and i have a new dog, which is great news :)

Rule out any UTI (urinary tract infections) first though as this can cause cats to wee/spray all the time...

Have a look at FELIWAY at www.petremedies.co.uk.

Vets do sell the diffuser and spray but it's more expensive.

Hope that makes sense and is of some help

My cat started doing this at my old house when she was around 8 years old and I had her checked at the vet, he told me that she could be being bullied by neighbouring cats

She was scent marking and urinating as she could have been panicking and frantically trying to mark her territory. When I moved house strangely it did stop and she has not done it since.

Its only something to consider once you have had vet check;)

having had any infection of her urinary tract ruled out by a vet, i would then second mel77's post: Its behavioural and often due to stress. the problem is finding out the cause of her stress. you could try a DAPP diffuser or possibly a herbal pet stress remedy. search out the dorwest herbs website for anything suitable:

This is my opinion too, and I have a vested interest. ;)

I have 3 boy cats, all get along fine but my 6 year old has just started spraying in the house (all 3 have been done!) Vet says he's fine, but I do have a cat flap and our neighbours have got a little cat who sometimes wanders in. I do not encourage him but put him straight back outside. Do you think my cat is spraying to cover up the scent of a strange cat in his house?

Spraying is a territory marking/defence mechanism, so you've probably hit the nail on the head :(

Sorry to hear you are having this problem. It isnt nice but happens occasionally in multi cat houses. Peeing indoors could be a sign of a urinary infection as suggested by medusa - any change in habit is worth checking out with the vets, just in case.
Using a steam cleaner is a good suggestion too, as the smell has probably gone through the carpet so needs steam power to drive it back out again.

Don't use disinfectant- there's something in it that makes cats want to pee there again to cover the smell. Non biological washing powder/ liquid in warm water is good for cleaning carpets - no nasty chemicals, no funny smells. If its colourfast you can also try spraying surgical spirit once its been cleaned.
Do your cats use a cat litter tray? If so, one tray might not be enough for 3 cats and your girl could be protesting.

A good thing to try to reduce her stress levels is a Feliway diffuser (like the DAP diffuser but designed for cats) if you try a search of the pets forum you should find links to websites that sell this product (vets usually sell it too)

hi peeps I have been having this problem with my cat. she is getting on a bit but does have access to a catflap which she uses so cant understand why she does it inside
The problem is after removing all carpets in the house and replaced with wooden floors she resorts to peeing on anything thats on the floor or on the sofa. I have two young children and am worried about them sitting on putting hands in it... i would like to know if there is something i can put on the sofa to stop her doing this.
please help or my dh will lock her out in the evenings!!!

It would probably be a good plan to get her checked over by a vet, it could be a medical condition like cystitis.
Sometimes cats can start to wee inside if a new cat has moved into your area and is intimidating them when they go outside to wee.
Try feliway, it comes as a spray and a plug in. Its a synthetic copy of the pheromone that cats leave behind when they rub their chins on things. It marks the environment as safe and secure. Urine marking is a defensive marking technique to warn off other cats but the feliway should counteract that. I would clean the area and spray it with feliway and have a plug in cuz the each time you spray feliway the smell (which we cant smell) only lasts a couple of hours.
My two year old cat randomly started weeing on our bathroom mat and I used feliway and it worked like a charm! Its fab stuff!
Also with the litter tray try putting soil out of your garden into it.

Hope this helps!
