Hmm, i tried to make this a poll, I got the options, but when I submitted I got a blank screen, why?? :(

**EDIT** Just added poll to thread after i checked it, and its worked :)

Shilpa is stunning and intelligent, no doubt about it. I do however think things would have panned out different had "the Jade" not been introduced into the house.

think you need a 3rd option - who cares!

i normally watch celeb bb, but as this year i genuinely only knew h from steps and jo from s club, i didnt bother watchin it.

i cannot believe that it has received so much coverage on the news etc. i saw the comments that jade etc made towards shilpa, and it was disgraceful but is it really headline news? there are lots of racist people around.

sorry, im just annoyed cos i know for the next month at least all my gossip magazines will be full of jade et al apologising! :( :(

Before anyone starts slagging me for being racist which I am not, don't you think its a fix and a way for Big Brother to save face by letting the Asian lady win after the trouble with the journalist that got kicked out. Sorry I don't know there names due to not watching it but just caught the story on the news.

Hardly a boo heard.

Jena76, I'm afraid that the antics of Jade, Jo and Danielle showed that racism in some people requires no encouragement.

The last 4 people left in were class acts - civilised human beings - Jade, Jackiey, Danielle, Jo and Jack certainly weren't. Simple as that.

of course but when did you last know a bb winner get so many boo's? :suspect:

JoeP
28-01-2007, 22:17
I would have been happy with Jermaine, but Shilpa ultimately contributed more. Jermaine was a stabilising influence, but Shilpa was basically teh one who survived the kicking.

Like others have said, had the Goodys not been introduced, I think that Shilpa wouldn't have won.

Quite frequently - there is always a substantial rent-a-mouth group at the exit shows. I've regarded them as Goodys in training. :)

Basically as the argument happened last week the producers had a few calls to say be careful as the press may home in on this and class it as racial, which they did! 3 white girls didnt like 1 black girl, straight away the racist card was played! as people do too quickly! They just didnt like her...end of!

BB was set up as a social experiment and the effects of that we have witnessed so the shouldn't complain.

Carphone warehouse pulled out their deal and BB have started to panic that they wont get support at the next one.

Channel 4 aren't capable of fixing the vote, it's all done by an external independent company.

There is no question that if Jade and Co. hadn’t acted in the way they had, Shilpa would not have won. However, Shilpa demonstrated that she is an intelligent, funny and sexy woman who was able to overcame adversity within the house. She is just as worthy a winner in my opinion as any other housemate, though personally I would have loved to have seen Jermaine win it.

So saying someone should “go home” in the context isn’t racist? Or referring to her as Shilpa Poppadom? Jade and Danielle are both very aware what they have done is wrong, hence the apologies they have made.

If you honestly believe two black people made it to the final to placate the racist arguments that have happened then I seriously worry for you. It just so happens that, big surprise coming here, Jermaine and Shilpa were more liked than the other housemates. Wow, who’d have thought that would be possible, us living in a multicultural society and finding a black man and an Indian woman, more likeable than, as Jeremy Clarkson so aptly put it “a racist, pig-faced, waste of blood and organs” and her cronies.

I don't know the ins and outs of the media regulations, but phone votes of this sort that raise a lot of profit (and in this case, money towards charities) are subject to adjudication and monitoring to keep everything above board and kosher. If the voting was really fixed, people could complain and call for an inquiry, like there was when Nikki was sent back in after people were charged premium rates to get her out. That's how I see it. I can be cynical, but not on this issue.

28-01-2007, 23:07
I'm really pleased with the outcome - I thought the last 4 were in the right order. And whether or not the behaviour from Jade & co was racist, it was nasty in the extreme. The expressions on the faces of Jackiey & Jade weren't something I'd like to experience at close quarters - they really were horrific. Sad to say this type of behaviour seems to be the norm in some parts of British society, anyone who speaks without swearing all the time, and maintains a pleasant attitude is often ridiculed as being 'a snob'.

Shilpa displayed elegance, dignity and intelligence. The Goodys displayed gutter language, bullying and ignorance. Shilpa was a worthy winner as she went through much more than any other housemate and managed to stay positive and supportive to others right to the end.

Maybe a bit off topic... but! what happened to danielle when she was evicted? and how come i've just caught a bit of the russel brand show, and no Jade/Jo/Danielle - what was the official reason???

I'm not being silly as you put it! Have you ever had food poisoning? Its not nice.

I know food-poisoning's not nice, but that's hardly the point. Shilpa wasn't intending to poison them, was she? She made a mess of cooking the chicken - it was a mistake, hardly something to hold against her. Everyone makes mistakes. You can't compare that to the concerted campaign of bullying there was against her, which was very deliberate.

StarSparkle

TattyBear
28-01-2007, 23:21
Im guessing the official reason is they need to protect them in case they are attacked and also it could be a legal battle.

I think Mrs Macbeth has hit the spot - Shilpa (and Jermaine to an extent) got where they ended up because people liked their grace and wisdom in the face of flack. I thought Shilpa's little speech to Davina was just perfectly phrased without being too icky.

I saw Jo's interview in the Mirror today - her big chance to try and show some humility. And she failed, totally. She's had some time to review her time in the house, and the bullying row in the real world, and she has no shame whatsoever over anything she said or did. And her 'I can't be a racist because I've got an Indian cousin' is quoted as saying he DID find her comments offensive and is very disappointed in her.

I agree with JoeP that this has been a vindication of the other type of Class. Even someone from a lowly background can show Class. And it makes a nice change to see it on TV. How many stars these days behave with dignity and self-respect? Shilpa's shown how it should be done. She reminds me of 'old' Hollywood.

I barely watched it but from what I gathered, she was really level headed, polite and spoke her mind in a constructive way whilst in the house.

She wasn't bitchy and didn't let people belittle her, whilst not getting worked up at people that were obviously being racist towards her (sorry, but anyone that thinks someone telling her to "f*** off home" isn't racist need to have a word with themself).

That in mind I think she deserved to win.

Apart from the word "White" I dont think the term white trash is considered racist today:

White trash is an American ethnic slur with a social class component. The term is usually considered interchangeable with trailer trash. It is comparable to "honky" in that it is targeted toward white people, but it also connotes low social status and poor prospects (i.e., downward mobility). To call someone "white trash" is to accuse that person of being culturally bankrupt. "White trash" is not a demographic group recognized by sociology.

Attitudes toward the phrase have softened somewhat in recent years, to the degree that some people describe themselves as "white trash", and there is a genre of rock music known proudly as "white-trash rock", but the phrase is still never found in polite contexts. "White trash" is usually associated with poverty; lack of education can also play a role.

Its just a phrase.

Exactly Jabber. . . I dont think Jena is quite grasping the meaning of what was said in the house and in what context it was said.

You know what I'm surprised about though, the amount of white people in my experience who I've heard say: 'I'm just going to the paki shop'. They don't mean it in a racist way, but it's an automatic description.

The thing is, "White trash" was used once in the house and was out of context as far as racism was concerned.. The bullying by the chavs was a sustained and extremely ugly attack. Now if Jackson had gone on and on about white trash that would have been completely different but he said it once. He could just as easily have said trailer trash, and Im sure that if he knew what a chav was, he could have just as easily used that word.

Channel 4 had thousands of complaints over the bullying and racist remarks in CBB,the most any other programme has ever had. That, plus the Media coverage, indicates to me that most people in this country DO object to racism and bullying. It is not surprising therefore that the voting reflected the majority viewpoint. The last 4 in the house all deserved to be there.Notice only Ian among them is a Brit. The voting viewers recognised good,well- brought up,kind, considerate people. Qualities that are sadly lacking in a large number of people in Britain today. I was convinced Jermaine would win,and Shilpa 2nd. I feel Jermaine would have won if there had not been racist and bullying issues involved

Personally, I'm aware of the term "white trash" from reading "Gone with the Wind". From what I understood from reading that book, I came away with the idea that "white trash" is a term that's been around for a VERY long time, certainly in the southern states of the US, to describe poor, uneducated whites who have made no attempt to 'better themselves'.

It seemed to be used by the white upper classes, educated whites and the blacks to describe the sort of people we'd call 'chavs' today. They were looked down on by everybody else and were held in contempt by the black slaves, as having no excuse in life to live the way they did.

Jerry Springer people, in today's world.

As far as I understood it, it was a class thing, not a racist term. And was aimed at the person's Lifestyle and Behaviour, not their Colour or Race.

No, not at all. It must go back AT LEAST as far as the 1930s, when Margaret Mitchell wrote the book. But I think it must have gone back a lot further than that, as Ms Mitchell knew her history of the southern states. She has characters from the 1860s talking specifically about 'white trash'.

Exactly, and like you Jabbers, I've looked up the term 'white trash', and its been used for ages, mainly it seems by respectable WHITE people in the USA to show that most white people don't behave/live like that. The term 'trailer trash' is used in exactly the same way, we in the UK would probably say 'chavs'. IMO, Jermaine was using it as a comparison. No way was this used in a racist manner. The three young women who behaved abominably have lived in the UK all their lives, and should understand what is socially acceptable behaviour. Unfortunately, as Jermaine stated 'you can't mix class with no class!' Said it all for me.

Edit: I've just seen Starsparkle's post (same time as mine), and wanted to add that it jogged my memory. That was where I heard the term first too - well remembered.

Im simply explaining, in the context of the thread, that in my opinion Dirk should have won BB.

Shulpa won it and she won it on merit. Its, as has been mentioned before, a nail in the coffin of the chav trash culture thats been haunting this country for the past decade or so.

Utterly fascinating man, who told the total truth about what was going on throughout the programme, no bull. Best advert for the over-60s I've ever seen in my life! Shilpa's thoughts in that area are inexplicable! :D

I don't believe for a second that the phone vote was fixed, but as with any reality TV show, the producers pick who they want to win pretty much from the start and do all they can to portray that person in a way that will encourage the public to vote for them.

Ben Elton's new book Chart Throb is really good at showing how it is done...

With the latest news and uprawl re: shilpa and the other housemates, has channel 4, and/or the government (or whoever) made a huge mistake...

Was Shilpa winning, a Fix or not?

Where's the option "I couldn't give less of a toss either way?" :D

carmencarter

I've always heard that British people always support the underdog, etc..

Shilpa was a nobody when she started and therefore didn't seem a likely winner.

But then she was bullied by a bunch of trashy, ignorant slappers who couldn't stand her because she was elegant, beautiful and oozed pure class...

Of course people had to vote for her, she's magnificient in more than one way.

Anyway, am I the only one who thought when jermaine left the house" now this is what Michael would look like if he had stopped the surgery after Billy Jean?"

That man was a good surprise.

Trust us, we're professionals. :D

We haven't received a big enough bribe to to do it. :)

Banesmabes - I think the way in which the producers can 'big up' their chosen candidate isn't as great as might be expected. The only way to do it is probably through the edits - I think taht it probably was done to a small degree this time around but I think it was very much 'gilding the lily'.

Short of showing Shilpa kicking a small child and a three legged puppy around the garden, it would have been difficult to edit things in such a way that wouldn't help her. :)

On the other thread there were a few posters who had watched the live streaming and were adamant that Shilpa often manipulated the situations around to an argument and then just sat back and let Jade & co talk themselves out of their careers. Personally I completely support Shilpa and think she was to target of disgraceful abuse, but you can never trust what you see on the highlights programmes!
