Would anyone happen to know where the 2007 Cow Parade is taking place?

Additionally, with such a high profile event, what would everyone's thoughts be on having our own Sheffield Cow Parade?

I've no idea why I'm asking this, but it's just something that interests me somewhat...

I just did a brief google of this. WTF?! It says it's an art event, but I like to think I've got my cultural ear to the ground and I've never heard of it. Tell us more...

Its an international event whereby every year Cows are decorated and placed on display. The better your Cow looks, the more points you get. It's really amazing how some people dress up their cows to look like alsorts of things, like spacemen, pineapples, gerkins and even chocolate bars!

Steady, if it starts to get too successful the council wil do something to wreck it or stop / spoil it

I think we should lobby the council to have our very own Cow Parade! Think of the media coverage!

Last year there was one in Edinburgh, and Monaco I think. And it's certainly been in Manchester too. To be honest I think it needs a bit of a bigger, more forward looking place than Sheffield. Here they'd just get vandalised probably.

Wouldn't sheep be more appropriate?

the vandalisation of a cow, regardless of decorative effect, is just not on

I saw it when it was in NYC back in 2000. It was great to spot all the different cows all over the city and all were created by local artists.

Well, if Sheffield did have a cow parade, I decorate mine as a hamburger in a shopping trolly. It's abstract OK.

Just found this page - tells you how to organise one in your home town :)

http://www.cowparade-eu.com/stage.php

Stage an event

CowParade is always looking for Partners to share with us what is, essentially, the magic of CowParade. Each event reflects the local culture and although many elements of each event will be similar, we encourage each event to have its own unique "feel" and creativity.

Successful events have been run by a variety of different organisations including:

Marketing, PR and Advertising Agencies
Charities
Property Companies
City Authorities
Individuals, with sufficient support

The keys to the successful management of an event are simple:

Access to the City authorities, Mayor's office etc
Credibility with and access to leading business figures and companies
Access to the artistic community
Sound management and financial skills
Time - allow at least 12 to 18 months before the event opening date
Passion

So if Sheffield did get Cow Parade status 2008, how would you guys decorate your cow?

I went into Manchester a couple of years ago or thereabouts, and saw plastic cows all over the place - some were stuck on top of the Caffe Nero building in the Piccadilly Gardens.

Did no one beckon them down with a bowl of.... cow food, firecracker?

Dear Sheffield City Council,

We want a Cow Parade because.....

Do they ever use real cows? (Off topic musing - do they ever decorate cows in India like they do with elephants?)

A (very, very geeky) pair of friends of mine won a competition when the Cow Parade came to Manchester.

One of the exhibits was called "Bar Cowed". It was basically a giant fibreglass Fresian sat in the Arndale Centre with a barcode on the side. The sponsors were challenging members of the public to try and figure out what it meant.

Said friends of mine just happened to know that said barcode was from an American 10-pack of Wrigley's Juicy Fruit chewing gum - that being the first ever item purchased in a shop using a barcode scanner.

They won a year's supply of beer. :o

Although my previous reply sounded pretty negative, I should say that I think it would be great if we did have one - might put Sheffield on the map a bit more.

Looking at the list of places that have had one in the past, they have tended to be more touristy, and a bit more well known, important, whatever you want to call it, on the world stage than Sheffield, which is partly why I said you need a bigger place, but there's also the practical consideration that you need to site about 50 cows all over the town in places where people can trail round and find them. Hillsborough, Bramall Lane and Meadowhall are obvious out of town places here, but everywhere else is going to be pretty much in the middle of town.

I saw this in Manchester and also in Prague  it is just surreal, cows doing all sorts of things in the most unexpected places, from on top of bus shelters to the middle of traffic islands.

People can buy them after the event and if you catch the tram in to Manchester from the Lowery you can still see one on the right just before the Gmex.

It's really good fun, but whether they would last long without some chavs wrecking them in some parts around here is another matter. The ones in Manchester generally survived but took some vandalism but the ones in Prague were hardly touched. Strange English problem  that we have some need to wreck things in public places.

That said I'd be all in favour of pressing the Council to apply for it, after all they have this dream that we are some great city of European culture rather than just the capital of the Hendo's Empire. But if enough people press them perhaps they'll go for it!

You can actually buy a blank scale of one these cows and decorate it whoever you wish. Maybe, we should hold our own Virtual Cow Parade here on Sheff Forum.

I love Cow Parade! I first saw it in Brussels and have since seen it in Dublin and Manchester (timing was co-incidence didn't go specially)

As Le Phantom says they are in the weirdest places and are decorated so unusually it's amazing.

It would be brilliant if they come to Sheffield. I am sure there would be people who would visit specially to see them, but there's no mention on the website at the moment.
