Knife siege A SHEFFIELD man armed with a knife sparked a four-hour siege after he barricaded himself inside his flat when police were called out to deal with a domestic disturbance. The drama began when officers were confronted by a man brandishing a knife when they called at his Kyle Close home, Southey Green. They were originally following up a report of a disturbance inside the flat, but called for back up when the man produced the knife and threatened to harm himself. A woman he had been arguing with - believed to be his partner - managed to flee the flat before he locked himself inside. Chief Inspector Andy Battle, who co-ordinated the police operation, said officers "had to withdraw for their safety and that of the occupant inside". There were also concerns that the man may have tampered with the gas supply to the house and gas engineers were called out as a precaution. Police cordoned off the road to prevent anyone from leaving or trying to get into homes near the flat, while officers surrounded the property. A team of officers wearing body armour was on hand on standby. Specialist negotiators were called in to talk to the man when initial attempts to persuade him to come out failed. They remained outside his flat and used mobile phones to communicate, and at 8.20pm last night - four and a half hours after the incident started - the man walked out with his hands in the air. He was arrested for public order offences and taken to hospital for treatment to a knife wound to his arm, which police described as "superficial." He was due to be questioned about the incident today. The drama attracted a crowd of up to 100 neighbours from the Southey Green estate. Chf Insp Battle said: "There was a successful resolution to the incident - we managed to persuade the occupant to leave the property and were able to arrest him for public order offences. "The purpose of the police cordon was to keep the scene clear while we attempted to reach a safe resolution for everyone involved. "Gas engineers were also on hand as a precaution when there was some suggestion that the occupant might have tampered with the gas supply. "We didn't evacuate people from their homes, but asked them to stay inside. "We were prepared for all eventualities." 01 October 2004 foreverdelayed 01-10-2004, 10:40 Originally posted by roger the police have closed kyle close at southey apparently somones threatening to blow up a flat using his gas supply and a lighter bit early for bonfire night PMSL |
