View Full Version : Who's got a webcam?

Being seriously bored, I decided to upgrade MSN Messenger to version 6 - the latest one. This has a much improved system for having webcam (video) chats with other users.

I have now "cammed" with a couple of the forum users and although quite scary (i.e. being able to see the person!) it was actually more enjoyable than simply text chatting, for example you can see their reaction to your lame attempt at a joke. :?

You can get MSN 6 from this link:
http://www.msnmessenger-download.com/preview/

Who else has a camera and chats online?
What are you opinions of it?

(You can view other users MSN addresses by clicking the profile button below any of their messages.)

I got a webcam a couple of years ago, and coz they were on offer in Dixons, I got some of the family them for xmas. Then we found our crummy 56k modems made them pretty poor, so they don`t get used. I`m on 600k cable now, and haven`t tried it out yet on a fast connection.

I've got a webcam but as Geoff can testify it's absolutely rubbish.

(I did have a hangover today though, so maybe that's why I looked so blurred Geoff  )

Ive got a webcam. Bought it about 3/4 years ago before they started coming with complete systems. Paid a lot for it but well worth it. As for using it on a 512/600/1024+ connection, then its really good. Smooth picture and couple with sound makes it very handy for just about anything!

Webcams?
A few mixed reactions from the previous posts. But for the benefit of the folk who don't understand these things could someone please explain how to fix up a webcam. And will it work on any
reasonably modern computer?
I'm sure there are many people who would welcome some expert advice.

Well, it depends what you're setting up your webcam to do. If all you want to use it for is to "chat" to people using Yahoo/MSN messenger, then you can practically plug one in to any computer with a USB port and just use it. (In my experience, it's that simple.)

However, if you want the webcam to "broadcast" on a web page, you'll need to set it up quite differently. First of all, there are two types of webcams for this job - one which streams the content to the internet (like a video) and one which simply uploads a static image every few seconds (it's then upto the browser to refresh the page to get the latest image). I don't know much about the streaming one, but the second option is quite easy to do as most webcams come with software to do that sort of thing. (You can even use mine as a security camera and get it to email an image to you - at work, for example - when something moves in the room!)

HTH.

Thanks Tony
Helpful information.
Especially as there seems to be a nice young lady in America who sends me an unsolicited message almost daily offering me the opportunity to watch her undertake her studies via her webcam.
I thought the least I could do was reciprocate.

I got a webcam for crimbo. So, if anyone wants to revitalise this thread and suggest uses, preferably legal, jump in.

I also have a webcam. Although it's nicely packed away somewhere and hardly ever sees the light of day ...

My webcam is great.........if you have broadband. Otherwise it's like watching security camera footage on crimewatch. I've not used it since I went back to 56k.

I'd say if you've got the connection then have a go cos it's quite funny sometimes and cool if you've had an internet pal for a couple of years but never seen them. It's so strange when you see them moving about for the first time.

I've only recently re-hooked up my web cam because someone was hankering after a pic and that was the quickest way to get one that was current..

I'd agree they're quite good for conversation if you know the person but in many ways it's just not worth the hassle...

Mine stays off 99.99% of the time... :)

We just got a webcam. Oh lucky me:rolleyes: . The other half thought it would be nice for chatting with my family on Yahoo or MSN (they live far away). It's horrible. You can see yourself (and worse, they can see you) mugging like an idiot, with messy hair, morning-after eyes, and the mess of a house you live in. Shudder.
Plus I'm paranoid it's on, even when it isn't...like a mini spy broadcasting horrible images of me into the sniggering ether.

When I was little and watched the Jetsons, I thought the video phone was a terrible idea...and here it practically is! No more crafty cigarettes mid-conversation with a rabid non-smoker, no sitting about chatting in your oldest, rattiest but favourite clothes, no secret bad-hair days.

This way lies DOOM!

BTW, can you have simultaneous conversations with multiple people with webcams, and still be able to see them all?

Cosy:P

MSN is the best for web-camming. Yahoo can be a bit jerky....altho you can broadcast to more than one person with Yahoo and you can't with MSN. Pick your fave.
