_johnnyb_ 22-01-2007, 19:29 Lots of cheap cars in the Ad Mag too.
englishgirl2 22-01-2007, 19:31 how about auctions? are they cheap?
Johnson Cars, Hollinsend Road.
_johnnyb_ 22-01-2007, 19:34 The auctions at Chesterfield and Bawtry tend to have fairly cheap stuff. Just make sure you go in with your eyes wide open.

which is better, the Chesterfield or Bawtry one?
i've been to the bawtry one but everything was too expensive
evildrneil 22-01-2007, 19:46 Your probably best buying privately - try looking in the Star on (I think) Thursday - but always take someoen who knows about cars with you :)
englishgirl2 22-01-2007, 19:49 anyone know where about the Chesterfield auction is? or have the address?

Bawtry is where the old cars go to die. I used to buy from there a lot but on my last visit I got the impression that the auctioneer was inventing fictitious bids against me and I've not been back since.
I used to buy in the £80 to £150 range.
I bought my present car from Arthur Daley Cars on Princess Street, Burngreave for £600. It's given me over a year of running with only £105 spent to sort out squeaky brakes and do a new MOT.:)

Any chance they could have been commission bids?
Bikertec 22-01-2007, 20:05 anyone know where about the Chesterfield auction is? or have the address?I wouldn't recommend a auction really seeing you can't actually drive it. Try to get one from a private add or even a dealer at least you have the benefit of trying it before you buy.
i wouldnt buy sub £1000 cars at auction unless its was dirt cheap, as most cars end up in auction when the trader finds out there is something wrong with car and not worth repairing, or only buy when it is main dealer part exchange as those cars are not suitable for their forcourt and its the best way to get rid of the cars, leeds auction is good for sub £1k cars but you shouldnt buy from auction unless there is someone who knows how to look for trouble
Buy my old saab.
I would have done, if I'd known about it!
As it is, I bought someone else's old SAAB last week.

Autotrader online is good. You can do a search which will only show the types of car you want to look at, in the price range you specify, and within whatever radius of your postcode you choose. There's loads to choose from. You can also pick private sales only if you don't want to deal with dealers.

What's one of those?
What happened was that the auctioneer made out that some bloke wandering past with a tray of chips had bid as he passed, even though he was paying no attention & looked utterly bamboozled at the suggestion.

a commission bid is one that someone put on the car before the auction starts and the auctioneer to use his discretion where to start the bidding and goes from that point if nobody bids higher than the comission bid the commission bid wins the auction the commision bid is also set at a price the buyer wants to go to and when it reaches higher than that the commission bid the bids then start on the floor simple is it not
try some of the new car dealers, they take old ones as p/x and send them of to auction, they usually keep them around the back as they are too old to put on the forecourt you may even get a 30 day warranty
Green Web 23-01-2007, 11:56 Try the shores of Branscombe for a bargain
