I'm quite interested in corsetry but asides from my very basic forays into teaching myself (which was almost two years ago now but will be getting more supplies soon methinks) I've not really done any more. Courses are very expensive and tend not to be local. Is anyone out there a corset-maker (on any level) and where did you "pick it up" from?

WEDDING DRESS IN NAPPA LEATHER!!! :p That sounds wonderful. What did it look like?

One of my friends says she knows someone who's taken to making them for other people and is largely self-taught. I keep meaning to ask her about it again...

That is indeed a wonderful dress :)

As for the corsetry: it's not looking likely for me to find fellow amateur-corset-makers here. Will just buy the next set of fabric/bits and get on with it I guess.

Hi

I tried making a basic corset once, with no pattern and just my instincts to go on, i used plastic boning and sewed it in, i t was fairly successful but the clasps at the front weren't proper corset ones so weren't strong enough (and now i'm too fat to wear it!)

where do you get your materials and patterns from?

does castle college have a fashion section?

im sure if you were able to contact them they may be able to point you in the right direction.

it might also be worth visiting gash in town. i know its a slightly different approach, but being as they make their stock, im sure there must be somebody there with some form of fashion/textiles qualification etc.

im fairly certain that the owner of ultravixen in the forum has training as a corset making. youll have to be quick to catch her though....shop is moving after tomorrow and im not 100% of the new address.

best of luck and keep us posted how you get on......i love corsets and might have some business for you!

I have a Gash one, and they buy them in from Volleurs, they don't even do the alterations themselves (though they do point you in the right direction of a good tailors!)

I went to Vena Cava Design (http://www.venacavadesign.co.uk) and bought a corset-making kit (didn't feel confident enough in my abilities to do my first completely on my own). Made a single-layer corset with steel boning, I rekon it's a pretty sound option for beginners. As well as the kit I got things like eyelet-riveting pliers and an awl, both of which I highly recommend investing in if you want to get more serious and make steel-boned jobs.

Will post pics of the one I made next time I'm online at home :)

wow thanks for that, i'll have a look later when my brain is looking in the same direction as my eyes  i've got eyelet riveting stuff, really useful in the first one, and i prefer steel boning so i'll definatly have a look :) TA :D

I think I may have just found Shangri-La:

corsetry workshops in Nottingham (http://www.bridal-originals.co.uk/costume-workshops.htm)

they're £150 per weekend but all the London ones I found were £300ish.
