Is anyone else finding that RM are being really inconsistent when it comes to sizing letters to determine what the postage should be? I receive a lot of application forms at work, every day last week I received some that got through ok, and others that had a sticker on them saying they'd been underpaid because they were too thick. However, the letters are identical - same sized envelopes, same number of pages. Thankfully we haven't had to pay for these yet, but they will cost a fortune when we do (£1 handling fee plus excess postage). But how can they let some through as standard letters while insisting identical letters are 'large' letters?
Contact your local sorting office, and ask them why.
Are the envelopes thicker than the Royal Mail's "standard"? Every household and business received a pack/leaflet which gave indications of maximum thickness. I think the ones that were sent out to businesses had cut-outs, so a letter could be slotted into it.
Also, you can refuse to accept a letter if it has the wrong postage on it, and ask for it to be returned to sender, who will have to pay the extra cost.

I don't take care of post in the company, they just tend to pay for whatever is underpaid. But so far RM say they are not charging for this just yet. I will definately recommend getting in touch with the sorting office if this continues once they start charging us. It's puzzling, because the letters are the same thickness as each other. I'd say they are a large letter, as they're quite thick, but loads are coming through fine with just the standard letter postage on them, while others are marked as underpaid!
