View Full Version : Fence window box bracket thingy???
Yellowrose 20-01-2007, 13:48 Am I imagining this? I saw a special bracket somewhere a few years ago that supported a window box on a fence. I am talking a fence that is maybe 4 foot high, the bracket was basically shaped a bit like an s or a number 5. The top bit went over the top of the fence whilst the bottom bit supported a window box or trough.
I cant find one on ebay or by google, but maybe Im just searching under the wrong thing.
Anybody seen one?

Seems Ive been searching under the wrong thing. These are balcony brackets. Has anyone seen any locally?
that sounds like a wilkinsons sort of thing, but I wouldn't swear to it
if you have a manufacturer, you can ask who they supply in the area
Yellowrose 29-01-2007, 16:58 I managed to get some mail order, but they are much more sturdy than the ones pictured above and bolt on to the railing very securely, and adjust to any size of box.
Im putting them on the front garden fence, facing inwards if you know what I mean, as facing outwards would be just too much temptation for some people. I was going to fill them with a few primulas until the summer bedding got going, but Im having second thoughts. The kids round here have been a real pain the last few days and I can picture them whipping the flowers out as they walk past. I then thought of planting something prickly amongst them!!! (slightly evil). Its a pity I dont have a large holly to prune!
The idea of this basket is so that when I look out of my front window I dont focus on the rather ugly view, but see the basket. I will try and post a picture when its up so you all know what Im on about.
Yellowrose 04-02-2007, 17:43 Just so you know what Im on about here it is! I have to look at this wall which retains a car park and its about 15 foot from our front window. The window box is meant to soften the view, until the fuchsia hedge grows up a bit.

Just planted it up today with an ivy, some pansies and primulas. Had a look at the photo, and the box looks like it wants a wash. I was so busy securing the box so some kid doesnt unhook it I forgot about that! How long before somebody picks the flowers or stubs a fag out in it???
dan987786 24-01-2008, 23:33 Hi Yellowrose,
Sorry to bump an old thread, but I am looking for exactly a bracket like the one you bought. If you can remember can you tell me where you got it from?
These things are hard to track down...!
It has to be dead sturdy as it will be going on a 1st floor window. Did yours stay attached ok?!
Cheers,
Dan

Hmm, I think that level of DIY is beyond me! I was hoping YellowRose could recommend a good brand. I don't want it falling off the railing and hurting someone below!
Yellowrose 25-01-2008, 16:34 I cant remember where I got it from, suffice to say it was mail order. It did stay attached very well. I found several options and bought the sturdiest. I think I googled balcony bracket. I will see if any of them are familiar... just bear with me!
dan987786 25-01-2008, 16:35 Thanks! Knowing the correct thing to google is half the battle... :-)
Yellowrose 25-01-2008, 16:40 Think this is it:

Scroll down, its the one that says balcony in the title.
I used some method of securing the bit that overlaps the fence or balcony to the back bit of the bracket. I think it had a hole tapped in and I used some of those plastic ties. It also had an adjustable clamping thing which secured by a wing nut. I tightened the wing nut and covered the wing nut in electricians tape as there were a lot of scrotes about where we used to live. Surprisingly it stayed put. But they did vandalise the plants. Dont get me started ... thankfully we dont live there any more.
I just remembered, I think I also drilled holes in the trough and threaded plastic rope though, securing the trough to the metal bracket's holes too.
dan987786 25-01-2008, 16:44 Thanks! Very helpful. Fortunately for me, the scrotes would have to be very tall to reach my 1st floor windows. The main thing I worry about is them being blown off in a gale and killing someone!
