A.B.Yaffle 28-09-2004, 21:16 Here's a list of some of them, but some of these I wouldn't really call a park! http://www.sheffield.gov.uk/out--about/parks-woodlands--countryside/parks/a-z-local-parks xafier 28-09-2004, 21:18 Mosbourough country park?? where the freak is that then? I live near mosborough and I aint a clue where theres a country park other than rother valley! vidster 28-09-2004, 21:36 Eastern Ave/Arbourthorne Pond (aka Arbourthorne PF). I certainly would'nt describe a fishing pond as a safe park for people to visit, or are they talking about the patch of grass behind the park, sorry... pond? franc1987 28-09-2004, 22:09 ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++= nickswfc 29-09-2004, 08:58 waterthorpe park? i live near there and the only parks i can think of are the ones that are havens for vandals and where 13 y.o. go on and drink cider Foxxx 29-09-2004, 12:18 Originally posted by franc1987 what about oughtibridge (coronation park- station lane) or hillsborough park (middle wood road) or graves park (not sure of the area) or endcliffe park (ecclesall road), There not on the list- well not that i can see and they are some of the more "decent parks around" You need to click on the other link to city and district parks, or better still, download the map of all parks in Sheffield. It lists 90! noseyrosie 29-09-2004, 13:12 They missed Meersbrrok Park off too. Fumb ducks. ilaria 29-09-2004, 14:06 our park in tinsley is dirty full of litter as people just feel free to throw rubbish when ever they like, its disgusting.there are bins where they can use.also people use it to smoke drugs in front of little children, drink and smash empty bottles on path where kids or animals can cut themselves. we have an idiot who rides on a little motorbike knocking little kids over i think its a disgrace we should have more security the cameras should be on at all times and we should have guards. Greybeard 29-09-2004, 16:56 Originally posted by ilaria we should have more security the cameras should be on at all times and we should have guards. I know we old 'uns do go on a bit, but when I were a lad the parks in Sheffield were something to be proud of. No doubt the main reason for the difference today is that Park Keepers are just a distant memory, and would likely need danger money to do the job. I expect that City Councillors and their families also used the parks so would be aware of problems. In those days Graves and Millhouses parks were my favourites, both had a boating lake. Proper rowing skiffs at Graves and paddle boats in Millhouses. ISTR too that Norfolk park had a lake with rowing boats, and a miniature railway around it...although that may have been just when the annual funfair was held there. Meersbrook park was great for sledging when the snow came, and we used to sail model boats in Millhouses and Firth parks. Sunday mornings was Endcliffe park for a good long walk and to feed the ducks, or Western Park to listen to the band and hymn singing...most of the parks seemed to have band stands in those days. They all seem to be pretty run down today, although we have taken the grandkids to Graves occasionally to see the animals. Simple pleasures, but long before TV and console games were generally available, and a welcome escape from the back streets of grimy old Sheffield. sanman 29-09-2004, 17:03 Must agree that most of our parks are in a pretty poor state. I have been doing some work on open space and park design lately and have been particularly impressed by the work done in Copenhagen. Have a look at http://www.sansehaver.dk/ , don't worry there is an English version of the site. Recent studies have shown that parks & playgrounds are more heavily used when they have wardens, simply because people feel safer. Mo 29-09-2004, 18:34 Can hardly call them parks, more just open areas for dogs to foul and yobbos to congregate. Gone are the days when they were full of municipal bedding schemes, a riot of colour and all grown and tended by a Council workforce. Gone are the childrens' playgrounds, long since vandalised and the tennis courts and bowling greens also where they still exist looking the worse for wear. To be fair though this is not just a Sheffield problem. I travel around quite a bit and sadly it is repeated throughout every town and city I have seen. I agree that 90 parks is somewhat an exageration for Sheffield. vampy 29-09-2004, 18:40 Originally posted by nickswfc waterthorpe park? i live near there and the only parks i can think of are the ones that are havens for vandals and where 13 y.o. go on and drink cider :hihi: white lightning all the way... vidster 29-09-2004, 18:52 Norfolk heritage park looks pretty good now thanks to a big sack full of lottery money. skala 29-09-2004, 20:20 there's longley park and the park in firth park, oh and concorde park! they are the few near to where i live! but they are also full of youngsters getting drunk on cider! just like i used to i suppose lol! Rother Valley is in Rotherham. There's a sign that says so just before you get to it. pammy 30-09-2004, 20:08 rother valleys actually in three places, rotherham, sheffield and derbyshire fuzzy 30-09-2004, 21:30 No mention of Bolehills or Lydgate park, so thats 2 more. Mo 30-09-2004, 21:57 Originally posted by pammy rother valleys actually in three places, rotherham, sheffield and derbyshire All 3 local authorities actually used to contribute to it's upkeep but Sheffield pulled out. I think that Derbyshire pulled out too leaving lil old Rotherham to foot the bill. |
