View Full Version : Anti Student Graffiti on Neill Road
Just walked down Neill road on my way home from work. It would appear that someone has taken great offence at students and graffitied a load of houses down the road with things like ***** off students. Obviously the clever little individual(s) is annoyed about students vandalising things. I might stay up and see if I can catch the them at it again. I for one would like to have word with them and question why they have graffitied several houses that I know for a fact aren't even occupied by students. I really do worry about some peoples backwards thinking. I suppose it proves that it's not necessary to study for a degree to be an idiot, anyone can do it!
Have you ever lived next door to students either side and had to get up for work? and I'm not just talking weekends here.
I do not condone spraying graffiti on walls about anyone but I have compassion with anyone (who isn't there for it's 'bohemian' nature) who lives in the student ghetto that is Hunters Bar. I was born there and moved a number of years ago, due to the negative changes to the area.
Yes I agree that it is annoying when drunk people make noise and keep us awake, but as far as i'm concerned, my road has been vandalised. I don't care who's been kept awake, you can't fight fire with fire. As I said several non-student houses have been graffitied, and I think it's mindless vandalism. I love the irony here that people are upset by students actions and decide to make a point by defacing peoples property. Really, well done there! I've been a student for years, and now I work. I've never vandalised peoples property, so I get upset with this kind of thing happening. It may be students, it may be non-students, either way it's idiots. As I've said in another post, these things happen in my (non-student) town. It's not just students it's pi**ed people.
I dont see the big deal with students... sure I know a lot of them act like idiots... and I dont live in the halls or anything, but personally me and my mates have never done any crazy crap like what people complain about... i think the worst thing was my mate knicked a "men at work" road sign... but big whoop!
at the end of the day, slag us off all you like, but if you deter us all from being students who the hell is gonna be qualified to fly your planes or run the power plants or make sure your banks computer systems are working so you can use an ATM? :P
I live in Broomhall. When I moved in it was the red light district, I got offered drugs every day and I used to meet people who were scared to death of the place. It's changed for the better, perhaps partly because of the student presence, and all the dealers and prossies have gone, but the vandalism and noise is much worse than it's ever been and it's all students.
I am glad Sheffield is a student city. I like what having 2 massive universities does for the city and I was a student myself. I am not anti-student.
I (grudgingly) accept that weekends are going to be a bit lively but it is now 7 nights a week.
Am I objecting to 4 students racing wheelie bins up and down the road at 3 am Monday morning because I'm a miserable old get?

As we've discussed before, there are a minority of students that cause trouble, a bit like there are a minority of football fans that cause trouble. The world believes that england is a country full of hooligans; Sheffield folk believe that all students are all filth. It's a shame that we can't just see that we are all just a collection of people, some are nice, some are mean. what group we are part of has nothing to do with it! It's a shame that we still live in a world of basic prejudice. whether that manifest itself as racism, studentism, sexism or whatever, it's a shame. one day we will all be capable of judging people individually, not by social group. i doubt that will ever happen in my lifetime though. :(
kittykat 28-09-2004, 23:42 Im a student myself and i have to say the majority of non-mature students are stupid in many ways. I can't believe these people are supposed to be the high flyers of the future. A lot of them dont even know how to spell simple words yet they still manage to scrape together a degree. Most of the academic material we need access to is online and this confuses a lot of them as it involves a bit of logic and common sense - which is something a lot of them dont have. Sure they can scrape together an essay in the early hours of one morning when they didnt decide to get drunk and itll be enough to get them the 40% pass they need.
I would hate to live near students and im really glad i dont live anywhere near the student epicenter as i just wouldnt be able to cope with their attitudes. It seems life revolves around drinking and acting the goat. I'll be glad when ive graduated and im out of that place.
I think its a shame that nice areas with decent houses (especially around the ecclesall road/broomgrove/collegiate campuses) are ruined by gangs of students. Then again we've got to study somewhere i suppose. Maybe they should build special blocks of flats for students to live in for all the years of the course not just the 1st year. Thay way they can be kept separate from society until they are ready to fit in (i.e when theyre paying taxes and have responsibilities)
Heres hoping none of my fellow students read this forum.:)
Captain_Scarlet 29-09-2004, 01:52 Well, freshers, 18 year olds, are mainly fools, and never lived away from homes.
Mature student slike mystelf, even drunk or accompanied don't make enough noise that would wake up neighbours, it's the least you'd expect from them, so might as well not do it to them !

Thats what I do and I left school at 18 with C grade in General Studies!!! So nahnah na na na!!!
Dont mean nothing - not a thing!
i think sheffield needs the soap dodgers but i must admit they are a pain in the arse....thet bring alot of money into the city so i suppose we have to put up with them.
This is laughable!
All these people complaining because of a few drunken students tipping a wheelie bin here or there?! Get a grip, these are mostly middle class well behaved kids that think the idea of rebellion is pressing a traffic light button at 2am
Try leaving in a place with real social problems, and real gangs and in a life where you are scared to go to the shop or to catch a bus or to get the lift to the top of your tower block of flats.
Agreed, noise can be a pain in the backside but see it for what it is, a bunch of kids having a laugh. Granted I never done it as a student as I wasn’t into hanging out with "tristram" or his mate from the home counties "Gustard", but it's hardly the end of the world.
As for the graffiti person, they're just spineless B******s who haven't even got the balls to confront a spotty 18 year old fresh outta 6th form.
I often sudder to think what a state this city would be in today if the uni's had never existed. Students bring not only money, but an influx of new blood to the city that ensure we have a vibrant and evolving cultural life. Students also tend to attract new developments and investors in retail and leisure industries that help the economy in the long-run.
Student-haters always seem to be very lazy and quite thick themselves. This is a stereotype and a generalisation, but as I have never met an anti-student native that showed the merest glint of intelligence, it'll have to stand as my opinion of them.

Mature student slike mystelf,
Are you drunk now? You're slurring your words! ;)
some_boy 29-09-2004, 12:29 Really getting Pi***d off with the student bashing. not because its all lies, but mainly the double standards and bare faced generalisations.
so far from what i've read people dont mind students drinking but do they have to do it during the week? people have said they have a skinfull at the weekend but hate been kept up when they have work, what about the people that work at the weekend you keep up on friday and saturday nights? or the people that choose to stay in and dont want to hear you singing?
"but i work all week for the right to get wasted at the weekend!"
its bloody hipocrisy.
some students go out during the week, some none students do.
some carry cones home, some none students do.
some do daft things like petty vandalism, and some none students do too.
I remember heavy drinking sessions when I was a student; but then I also remember working into the small hours in those days as well.
When I left the world of academia and entered that of paid work I soon became familiar with the concept of the "booze bank holiday" whereby a colleague would overindulge at the weekend and call in "sick" on Monday morning.
At uni there was no such thing; the only time I was granted an extension on a deadline due to illness was the time I was involved in a road accident and suffered a cranial trauma.
Always seemed to me that people hated students because they never shoulderd the responsibility of an academic course themselves; students on the other hand eventually enter the world of work and do just fine.
What's worse: following an academic career because you have the drive to, or getting a 9 to 5 job and whinging because you accepted such narrow horizons when others did not?
I think the point people are trying to make is one of social responsibility.
Nobody minds people going out and having fun, but I can understand people losing their patience if they have disrupted sleep most nights of the week. Surely the students one here, in their infinite wisdom can accept this? *bows head*
Also, to call someone narrow minded for not going to university is plain rude, and I don't think it's a comment you shd be making on here. It shows a little naivety on your part.
Everbody has a choice, some people are happy not to attend Uni - as I was. That's not to say I am narrow minded local though. I'm 23, a home owner and Sheffield is the third city I have lived in (so far).
One more thing (I'm in danger of rambling on forever here) the students of today, are the self-same people who will be complaining about students in the future. I promise you.
"I hate students" is a badge every non (and former) student wears.

If you read my post, I didn't call anyone "narrow-minded" for not attending uni, you're making that one up!
What I did was ask a question.
The point I was making is that in life we all have choices that will shape and influence our lives.
The vast majority of people I've met who bash students as "lazy drunks" or "scroungers" who should get a real job have been folks with very little ambition and imagination who settled for the first dead-end job that came along and resent anyone not as unfulfilled as they are.
Many of my friends didn't attend uni and many did, but those that chose a career over a degree don't resent those that did. They don't resent them because they are intelligent individuals who know their own mind and admit responsibility for their own choices in life.
Sure some students drink in the week and make a nuisance of themselves but they are not alone; I live in Hilsborough and put up with the non-student drinkers who stagger home most weeknights as though it was a Saturday.

Nobody is whinging because they chose not to go to Uni. People are complaining (not me) that they are kept up late by people staggering home at all hours.
If they live in an area that students have moved to, then it's a fair assumption to make.
I find it staggering that you view chosing a career over studies as choosing narrow horizons.
I also live in Hillsborough, and have no problems with people keeping me awake, then again it could be me keeping others awake ;-)

Missed the point again, I'm afraid.
The part of my post that you're quoting is phrased as a question that is based on the fact that most people I meet who complain about students in general are bitter souls that hate their lives and resent the fact that students appear to have more freedom than themselves. The very fact that this is a question refutes the accusation that I'm calling anyone anything.
I also never stated that I viewed a university course as superior to "a career", I stated that it was superior to a "dead-end job" as the former enriches a person and the latter drains them both emotinally and intellectually.
In most cases the act of resenting of one human being by another is fuelled by inadequate feelings on the part of the accuser towards the accused.
I was agreeing with users such as some_boy, and offering my opinions on the root of the bizarre attitude that some take towards the student population.
And as far as denigrating a career over a course of studies, that'd be hard to do as a course in higher or further education is usually a step along a person's chosen carrer path!

I think you mean... "It does not mean anything.."
Its easy to see how you managed such incredible exam results.
Well done.
Ellerington 12-10-2004, 10:42 Hi, I'm a journalism student putting together a piece on local feeling towards students - especially in areas such as hunters bar.
Would anyone with particularly strong opinions be willing to talk with me about the problems students have caused in their area and how they feel the student community affects the health of the city?
PM me if you'd like to express your concerns.
50,000 students in sheffield - your bound to get some idiots im afraid and they will get peoples backs up, but the people who did that are probably no older than 12-13 anyway.
Any group of people out on the streets at night making a noise is annoying. This is not exclusive to students by any means. Anyone come accross a group of 30+ year old women on a hen party recently?
However, students annoy me for two reasons:
1. They fill up the pubs, keeping me from the bar
2. They're all younger than me
:)
