Always thought it is a bit of a waste to have such a nice building all boarded up, but the planning applications for last week include one for the former Salvation Army Citadel opposite the Peace Gardens.
The applicant is a Buffalo Joes, who have a bar in the Newcastle area. Been doing a bit of looking, but no doubt some of Sheffield Forum's members might have been. Is it any good? Is it the sort of thing currently missing in Sheffield city centre? They might not get it, but the application is there...

Still, it's better than that dump of a Hostel - hopefully the awful theme bar will last 6 months and then be taken over someone with more taste. Best of both worlds with then result!

we dont need that in sheffield! you seen the pictures? its looks really cheesy and ewwww... dont we have enough crappy stuff in sheffield?

That's typical of Sheffield! I think Living Rooms (really nice pub co) were looking at that place and got knocked back.

Now there will be another sh*t pub in another beautiful building (think walkabout).

Sad, sad, sad, sad, sad.

yeh, and on the website, they call themselves the "FUNNEST" bar in town...right. need i say more?!!

As a novocastrian I can confirm this place is utter dogsh@t aimed at stag nights, hen parties or people devoid of any social or musical taste and are pleased by a party popper and a £3 glass of crap beer.

Truly awful.

I went briefly into the Buffalo Joes at Newcastle briefly a couple of months ago. Yes it was really cheesey, but lets say the women in their weren't leaving much to the imagination. Good place for the blokes I would say,

Certainly not my sorta place though

well remember guys, it's only at the planning application stage. maybe they'll get knocked back. there are loadsa new appartments directly above, and it'll clash with the NRQ, so maybe policy will be to refuse a bar there. looks like fingers crossed for that then! I agree with Danb1 - we need a Living Room or a Pitcher and Piano.

Pitcher and Piano would be fab, love the one below the Bridgewater hall, Manchester. Would be nice if they had it near the City Hall, but there isnt anywhere really.

Walkabout is ok, and the building it's in is not that fantastic, like a methodist warehouse.

I'm glad anyone is taking on the Salvation Army Citadel, at least it won't get demolished now.

OH NO! :gag:

The Council must reject this application!

This is not the ideal location for a bar of this kind, I got a feeling the Council will knock this one back too, as they want the area within and around the new Peace Gardens / St Pauls Place to be of outstanding quality to reflect the new face of the city.

Buffalo Joes would not reflect this:hihi:

The imminent opening of Sharkeys just off West Street, on Regent Street is bad enough!

Mmmm. We'd considered this site as a potential new venue, it has been up for ages, but it was sooooo expensive we ruled it out. I think it was about a million squid for the lease or something daft.

I tried looking at the web page but when Buffalo Joe's version of cotton eye joe kicked in i just had to close that window.

I doubt all the horses in the wild west could drag me in that place.

I'm actually disapointed that this has been rejected - it looks like somewhere for the chavs to go, leaving people who don't want a fight/hassle to go other places in peace!

had a day out in Leeds on Saturday - shopping/drinking. why oh why does Leeds have a number of great bars and Sheffield ends up with only the dregs left to go to? we just don't seem to be able to get it 'right'.

A couple of places are trying and i think things are improving but cities like Leeds and Manchester just put us to shame.

Surely we have nice people in Sheffield that want to go to nice places?? we either seem to do pretentious or chavvy.....

Please someone open something decent!

Must disagree DateExpress. Here's a list of fine (not pretentious) Sheffield bars that would grace any city:

1. The Wig and Pen
2. Trippets
3. Lounge Bar (during the week)
4. The Forum
5. The Priory
6. Menzells

I'm sure there are more, but those were the first few that came to mind.

So there!

i think sheffield has great bars. I live in newcastle and i too have been to the ****ehole that is buffalo joe's. Very popular with fellow students and stag nights. Its bars like that however that pull people into newcastle from all around for nights out! Thats not the worst of it though, about 50%(just a guess from experience) of the bars and clubs in newcastle are owned by the same company- Ultimate leisure and everyone of them is as tasteless as the next but they bring in loads of money. They are currently looking at other cities, they've opened a club in leeds and they are eyeing up potetnial sites in sheff, so enjoy sheffield's variety before its too late!!!!

I actually think a Buffalo Joe's opening in Sheffield would be a good thing, however pathetic the concept is. It adds to the variety of the nightlife and as mentioned below, the one in Newcastle brings people in to the city.

Also, just try and name a bar in Sheffield City Centre that you could describe as a fun, party venue. I cannot think of any...

However I do agree that the proposed location was inappropriate, maybe West Street or Eyre Street would be more suitable.

I do hope this does not mean the old Citadel ends up falling into disuse because every scheme is turned down though!

Plan is : reject every application, building falls into dissrepair, building becomes unsafe, building gets demolished, land is sold, luxury block of flats built on site.

?

I would love to see that building being used for something.

It's round the corner from the Panasonic shop on Pinstone Street (opposite Laura Ashley). It looks a bit like a castle.

I've enjoyed a few nights out in Newcastle recently- you must surely admit that the bars up there are VASTLY superior to the offerings we have here. Only visited a few- Stereo, Popolos, Tokyo, The Forth (I think) and a few others- any one of them would be close to the best bar, if not the best bar, were it to be in Sheffield.

*sigh* Another ****e townie bar to add to add to Sheffield's growing collection, yet more accomodation for **** heads out to start a fight, alas anyone not wanting to go out to an over-crowded bar, playing too loud music, surrounded by drunkards once again gets squeezed out of the city centre.

It is true there are some decent places to go as someone has already listed, but these are become scarcer and increasingly loosing the fight against the marching army of chain bars attempting to take over every city centre in the country and turn them all into identikits of each other.

I like going to traditional pubs where I can get decent beer, I also like posh bars with smart surroundings and nice people in a (normally) relaxed atmosphere.

However - it's great now and then to go to such a mad townie bar and just be able to let your hair down and have a LAUGH!

Sorry Nat. I do understand where you're coming from. I used to love the Forum. It was like an extension to my living room - I was there nearly every night.

But I kinda o-d'ed on The Forum and which has been a good thing coz I've discovered a whole world of variety in the city centre scene.

So why not do a different bar every night (Starting with Trippets tonight perhaps?...) ;)

I think this should have gone ahead, as all the townie's will go there, and there is less chance of seeing them in the decent bars!

I'm not against having some of this type of pub, it's fair to have something for everyone. Just seems at the moment that pretty much all of new bars opening are of this ilk, there's no diversity.

I also really detest chain bars taking over our city centres and making them lose their individuality.

I would have said that most of the new bars are not of that style, they are generally 'style' bars.

That said if we are talking about late bars I guess you are right, that is mainly due to the licesing requirement that says they have to have a dance floor, cloakroom and food. The new licening laws coming in should change that.

I really agree about chain bars though, it's often the ones with individual style that stand out, and we don't want the identikit High Street syndrome. Some chains are worse than others of course, Wetherspoons, Barracuda and Yates spring to mind as offenders of being the same wherever you go.
