View Full Version : Wortley Park Walk Saturday 3rd February 10.30
WORTLEY PARK WALK SATURDAY 3RD FEBRUARY 10.30 AM
(If cancelled due to bad weather, alternative date Sunday 11th)
This is a repeat of a walk held in 2006 by the Sheffield Forum Walkers Group.
If you weren`t one of the lucky few who experienced this wonderful walk on a beautiful autumn day last year, then why not think about putting in an appearance this year and experience a lovely walk round the gardens of a stately home, through woodland, game country, and enjoy one of the best walks imaginable!
Furthermore, as can be seen from the thread from the last walk.....http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=153944 there will also be the delights of the Countess Tea rooms at Wortley to sample as an added incentive, worth attending for that reason alone!
The 88 and 76 Buses leave regularly from town, and both stop at the crossroads at the top of High Green, which is where the walk commences. There is street parking at the crossroads for car users.
For anyone unfamiliar with this walk, it will leave from the crossroads in High Green going through Westwood Country Park in a northerly direction towards Barnsley, crossing the A61 near the McDonalds roundabout, then carrying on through Wortley Park into Wortley, and then back in a southerly direction towards Wharncliffe Crags, turning off just before the Crags in an easterly direction into the village of Howbrook, and then returning back to High Green.
Just 2 short, steep hills, and plenty of muddy fields, so appropriate footwear is reccomended. Tea room, and Old Tyme Entertainment is provided in Wortley, and there are alehouses also in Wortley and High Green.
As before, all walkers are welcome back at Scooby land for more liquid refreshments on completion of walk.
purdyamos 18-01-2007, 00:25 Will the weird archeological ground-starers still be pacing that empty field, do you think?
And is that how the field full of cabbages next door started off? :hihi:
Can we divert to Wharncliffe crags because I never went on that other walk you done there.
Please inform all newbies that on walking through High Green we must all sing 'I bet you look good on the dancefloor' in four part harmony while waving white rose flags.
I missed both those walks before Purdyamos, so if we can do both in one, that'd be great. I'm jumping up and down with my hand in the air in a "me-me-me-MEEEEE" kinda way.:D
Albert T Smith 18-01-2007, 08:07 Yes, the people have decided! Well the ale supping regulars who attended the Walkers Meet 17th January have lol, that a repeat of the great Wortley Park 2006 jaunt is to be repeated!
This magnificent day out, soon to be promoted as an annual happening or even a National Bank Holiday event, will very shortly be reconvening for the pleasure of the Sheffield Forum Walkers Group.

On a serious note, the walk date is yet to be decided, but mid February is a good possibility at the moment, and as always, imput from interested partiewould be welcomed.
For anyone unfamiliar with this walk, it will commence at the crossroads in High Green, which is served by an every 10 minute First bus service, and then proceed in a northerly direction towards Barnsley, crossing the A61 near the McDonalds roundabout, then carrying on through Wortley Park into Wortley, and then back in a southerly direction towards Wharncliffe Crags, turning off just before the Crags in an easterly direction into the village of Howbrook, and then returning back to High Green.

Comments welcome please!c
What time does the walk start? and is prior permission of the original shareholders of Wortley Hall & Parkland required to use the footpaths?

No specific time in mind, but 11.0 or maybe 12.0 would be ideal I think, given that there`ll be a break 1/2 way. For people coming to the starting point by bus, I`ll give more details of bus no`s neare the time, but I think its the 88 leaving from either High Street or Arundal Gate.
Regarding the access to Wortley park, its a public footpath thro the estate. However, unlike last time when we only saw the Hall from a distance, I`m going to plan a route that`ll take us right up to the Hall this time.

Yes Purdy, a `Beatles Liverpool-style` tour of Arctic Monkey houses can be included if so desired lol.
In regards to Wharncliffe Crags, although we come close to the entrance to Wharncliffe Chase, which incidentally you`re only supposed to have access to on Saturdays and Wednesdays, it would add a further 4/5 miles on at least, and that would include missing out what I felt was one of the better parts of the walk which was Wharncliffe and Greno woods.
Perhaps we could keep a Wharncliffe and Grenoside walk up our sleeves for a future date?
purdyamos 18-01-2007, 12:47 OK scubz, you're the boss.
SpiderPete 18-01-2007, 12:50 This sounds interesting and by then I will have my walking outfit all bought.
Approximately how long is this walk in hours ?
Do we pass a few pubs ?
Put me down as a provisional. :)

Now Purdy, I hope you're not just going to come to this walk dressed in tracky top, skinny jeans and plimsolls, and clutching an award :nono: That's not the correct attire for a walk!

The walk took about 4 1/2 hours last time I think, but we had loads of stops, including the infamous stop at the Countess Tea rooms, which as you might now, took all of an hour to get tea for @ 10 people! It was probably @ 6 miles, with only one real hill!
Regarding pubs, there`s one 1/2 way, which was closed last time for refurb which I reckon must be open by now, and one at the end. There`s also the offer again to come back to mine for tea/ale at the end as we pass close by where I live. In fact at the meet 17 Jan, there was a suggestion of a "session" at mine at the end :o . This to be discussed further later!
Hope you make it Pete
susiepoosie 18-01-2007, 18:35 Ooooh, me too, me too! Sounds great!
Is the Hi-Vis beagle welcome on this trip? I spotted the mention of tearooms rather than a pub somewhere in that lot :(
Of course the pampered pouch is welcome, as are you and the old man! The more the merrier in fact, the walk is extremely dog worthy, just a few sheep here and there.

This sounds good, thanks for the info, there is a very good chance I will be there.

Fantsatic! Welcome to the group.
BlankFrack 19-01-2007, 08:35 I'm in if I'm here and available.
Sounds like a cool walk :)
Just to inform anybody interested, the time of the walk has been brought forward 1/2 an hour from 11.00 am to 10.30 am
I've changed the thread title to reflect the new time Scubz!
So to confirm, meeting place is the crossroads at the top end of High Green, just up from the Health Centre. Is that Thompson Hill?

Yes, its where Thompson Hill meets Wortley Road. Just look for an old man sat on a bench, it`ll be me!
ItIsNow! 29-01-2007, 12:30 Count me in,Scubz.I'll be there.( And if you're old - so am I.:help: )

Well, you`re welcome to come and sit on that bench with me ItIs, but you`ll need a flat cap, and a whippet might come in handy too!
See ye Saturday!
I would like to join you on Saturday if thats ok but I am a bit worried about the appropriate footwear comment as I dont own any proper walking boots or shoes  would this be a problem?
Shouldn't be a problem, I often walk in my trainers
purdyamos 29-01-2007, 21:31 I would like to join you on Saturday if thats ok but I am a bit worried about the appropriate footwear comment as I dont own any proper walking boots or shoes  would this be a problem?
As long as they're comfy, have a bit of grip in the soles and aren't going to drink up too much wetness, you should be fine.

I dont possess `proper` walking shoes, I wear some sturdy trainers that I bought from Decathlon for about £20 that were advertised as walking shoes or something similiar.
I wouldn`t worry too much about your footwear just follow my path, cos I avoid mud like the plague and always return in pristine(ish) condition!

It could be arranged for you to return dirty if you wanted Scooby! Don't forget I have a dog who loves finding the muddiest parts of the walk and then is friendly enough to share the mud round lol
Does anybody need to know bus numbers/times/departure points for this walk, if so I`ll look `em up!
Weather forecast is looking good at this stage. If I heard it right, sunny and cold is on the cards, which would be perfect for the views we`ll enjoy. An invitation still stands for anybody who wants to to come back to mine afterwards for tea and ermmm apparently birthday cake! Or Creamflow and crisps if preferred!
The 88 that goes down Ecclesall Road goes to High Green so I will be getting on one of them, but I dont know how often they run on a Saturday. I have also never been to High Green so could well get lost at the other end! Hmmm guess i better take an A to Z with me! Will anyone else be catching this bus?

See the following : http://www.stagecoachbus.com/timetables/Bus8831jul06.pdf
The bus leaving Arundel Gate at 9 44 would be the best one to catch. This gets to the meeting point at 10 25. To help you find the correct stop, as you go thro` High Green, watch out for 3 pubs in a row on your right, the middle one of which has fencing round it, and you need the 2nd stop after those, just as the bus turns left at the crossroads. I`ll pm you my mobile no, just in case you get off at the wrong stop!
see you Saturday!
Godzilla 31-01-2007, 22:48 Count me in on this. I've got a bit of arthritis in my knees, but I think I can go the distance if it's not a route march. Will be bringing Taxman along as he'll be staying with me over Friday night.
I'll be getting the bus from Arundel gate. Will be the lost-looking person with green Rucksack ...
Just to confirm details. Meet at High Green crossroads, where Wortley Road meets Thompson Hill, at 10.30 a.m. SATURDAY, not Sunday as some people think! There are a number of people catching the 88 bus that arrives from Ecclesall direction at Arundel Gate at 9.44, finally getting to High Green at 10.28. If the bus is late we will obviously wait for it before setting off.

Unfortunately Albert T Smith is ill and will not be coming.
It`s not too late for anybody else thinking about coming to put their name down, according to the weathermen the forecast is for same as today, sunny all day, so it should be a good day!
metalman 02-02-2007, 12:24 It's a possibility that I might come, accompanied by one other. What sort of time are you looking to get back to High Green do you reckon?
BlankFrack 02-02-2007, 13:04 Sorry Scubz - I shouldn't even have made it onto your "possibles" list cos I'm dans les alpes francais discovering that I'm utterly useless at skiing but remarkably good at drinking.
This morning I took a day off from skiing and thought of you lot as I did a preposterously tiring walk up a steep, snowy mountain path all the way from the little village of Les Coches up to the top of Plan Bois. 7km of very pretty hell! Thankfully the top of Plan Bois is home to a a cafe that does yummy hot chocolate and a chairlift that goes WHEEEEEEEE all the way back to Les Coches.
Hope you all have lovely walk tomorrow and maybe see you for another one soon
Albert T Smith 02-02-2007, 17:25 I hope that the weather remains fine and you all have a good enjoyable walk.
I'm not with you, because I've got a rotten cold and don't want to give anyone else it. I hope that some digital photos are taken for happy memories.
I will catch the 88 about 9.25ish on Eccy Road which i think will time it about right for 9.44 at Arundel Gate.
I forgot to ask before but do i need to bring any food/sarnies with me? I am really looking forward to it now, someone told me today that Wortley Park is lovely! :)

I would imagine that it`ll be around 3.30-4.00, if we stop for @ an hour 1/2 way along. There will also lots of stops en route for views, and to have a look at the Hall too probably. This will be more of a stroll than a hike incidentally

That sounds like the right bus Nooka.
Wortley Park and Hall are really nice, with good views all the way past Barnsley on one side and across to Wharncliffe Crags on the other.
Regarding food, its up to you whether you bring some sarnies or not. There`s a cafe and a pub at Wortley where some people will buy food, whereas other people will take their own. On last weeks walk I took some sarnies with me, but ended up eating them for my tea at home cos I got something in the pub we stopped at! This is what I`m going to do again tomorrow. Confused even more now I bet aren`t you?

Unfortunately that probably rules us out because I need to be back before that. Maybe we'll have a go at it another day. Is there a map or a walk book with this walk in or is it one you've devised yourself?

Thats a shame, all that sunshine and fresh air you`re gonna miss!
The walk is one I`ve made up, cos its the area that I live!
See you again some time I hope!
If the Countess tea rooms are busy there is also a bar in The Wortley Hall which is open to the public for tea, coffee, alcohol, bar meals etc.
purdyamos 03-02-2007, 12:34 I'm really sorry I didn't make it. I was so looking forward to the walk, and meeting new members. But overnight I became rigid with terrible tension up my back, all through my neck and shoulders, and my head felt like it was trapped in a vice. When I tried to move about I was sick. I hope you all had a great time, and haven't been banned for life from the Countess Tea Rooms. And happy birthday scubz! (even though you weren't answering your phone!) :)
Godzilla 03-02-2007, 17:09 Thanks to Scubz for a great walk with lots of variety. The sun kept shining and we had the opportunity to see Wortley Hall close up. The carpet of snowdrops in Wortley Park was really impressive. We finished back at High Green at around 3.45pm; my joints were a little stiff and I've got a blister, but it was a Saturday well spent.
Great day out enjoyed by all who attended. The weather helped to make it, but the nicest thing for me was the bonhomie of the people present. Great thanks to those who turned up.....Godzilla, Taxman, Bambi, ItIsNow, Nooka, Grissom, and tough tittie to those who couldn`t make it!
And just to put these peoples` minds at ease, I have the following `News Update`.......
The Walk Leader, having helped less mobile people all day, over stiles, down bankings, and through streams, has sustained no serious injury in his tragic and ungainly mudslide down the treacherous banking encountered close to the return point of the walk!
Although putting on a brave face when he encountered a mudslide the length of an alpine run, he characteristically carried on as if nothing had happened, ignoring his mud phobia, and whilst pretending that he was in no great discomfort, he headed for the comfort and reassurance of his Boddington filled respite with gusto!
In other words, what a Wally I felt falling arse over tit, getting muddied up to the eyeballs in the process, having spent most part of the day making sure that no-one fell down climbing the many stiles and walls that we encountered during the day!
Godzilla 03-02-2007, 17:46 And this was a booze free walk! Thanks to Twinky1 for dashing by to say Hello to us as we sat outside The Countess Tearooms. Scubz organised the ordering - by now knowing the form!
And this was a booze free walk! Thanks to Twinky1 for dashing by to say Hello to us as we sat outside The Countess Tearooms. Scubz organised the ordering - by now knowing the form!
Oops, sorry, I forgot to mention Twinky1. What a surprise that was to have a member of the public accost 7 innocent cafe wallers at the Wortley Countess Tea Rooms with the words "Are you Sheffield Forum members?"
Was a great shock, almost seemed like we had an invisible big-finger pointing at us, stating "Sheffield Forum people here!"
Seriously, thanks a bunch Twinky for seeking us out, maybe you`ll join us on a walk some time? As you could see, none of us have two heads or anything!
purdyamos 03-02-2007, 18:27 Regarding the stated 100% improvement in the Countess Tea Rooms, do you not think it's possible that someone connected to the place read about the walk on the forum and warned them to pull their socks up when a big group turned up today? :suspect:
Thanks to Scubz for organising an interesting and enjoyable walk and thanks to everyone else for being friendly and welcoming. The stop at the tearoom was a welcome break for lunch, not so sure about the 'interesting' quiche but the tea was nice and i enjoyed my crisp! :hihi: I think the distance was just about right for me i feel suitably tired but not completely knackered. Hope to join you again in the future. Oh and a special thankyou to Itisnow for driving me right to my door afterwards!

Don`t let us mislead you Purdy, the Tearooms re still crappy. The food is poor, the charges extortionate, and the service is slow as can be. The main improvement was in the waiting time, which we brought on ourselves by taking our own order. All in all 1/10 for the Countess Tea Rooms at Wortley!

I stand corrected. It was 100% improvement in the preparedness of the clients. :D
ItIsNow! 03-02-2007, 19:26 What a fabulous day.I thoroughly enjoyed it.Wonderful weather and really great company. Thanks,Scubz for arranging it.Yes - the cafe was ...erm.... OK.(Even though the quiche resembled something from down 't pit.:gag: )
The views were magnificent - glad I took the binocs.
Thanks for the apres-walk refreshments,Scubz - they were VERY much appreciated.
Have a great day tomorrow... many happy returns of the day! (You're the same age as I am,tomorrow - so I'll have to help you over the stiles...:D )

Joking apart it was lovely to meet you all and I would love to go on your next walk.

Oh my goodness! This is news! I'm presuming, twinky1, that you've read or heard about our brush with the fawlty towers of the tearoom world? What happened to the previous incumbents? Did any of the walkers who went on the last walk notice the difference?
It's the end of an era. (Sorry I didn't get to meet you, btw.) :(

Sorry Twinky, got to speak as we find, and new owners or not, we didnt get value for money today I`m afraid on what we had.
Ok, there was a good choice of home made desserts, but basically, everything took for ever to arrive, and not for the first time, they got things wrong! Like custard instead of ice cream, and a simple cake taking 30 mins to be brought to the table, by which time the cup of tea to be taken with it had long been been consumed!
The quiches we had were dried up and served with a minute amount of salad garnish, along with one crisp per portion, and all at £3.50 a throw! Last time we called in there it was even worse, they couldn`t even serve a cup of tea without making a cock up of it!
The people who worked there were extremely stressed, but very nice, but having said that we certainly wouldn`t hesitate to call there again, if only for the laugh.

Hello purdyamos
I would say in Wortley there is no beginning or end of an era, just a way of life - do do do do - do do do do..........expext the expected.......you won't be dissapointed.
Sorry I missed you too, hopefully we will meet up next walk.

Unfortunately for you the new people have only been there for 2 days so the old staff are still showing them the ropes............................................
Mrs Overall, - strike a cord!!!!!!! I did on a previous reply say that Wortley Hall did refreshments but you chose to ignore this BIG HINT,don't expect the expected then you won't be disappointed - seriously though, give the new owners a chance,it may not be Faulty Towers but Acorn Antiques it could be.
A laughs a laughs no matter where.
Next time come round to Cottage Gardens,we can't promise cakes or quiches but we promise a friendly welcome and we will put the kettle on.
I'm soooooo sorry to have missed this one - AGAIN!  due to nforeseen circumstances.
Fear not though, for I have already put myself up for next Sunday's walk, and will be raring to go, like a raring thing! :D
Thanks to Scubz for a fab guided walk and to mother nature for glorious weather ! Start of the walk was icy and slippery (almost went over just few minutes into the walk !) but it didnt take long until there was a lot of stripping going on :)
Some great views on the walk, including fields of god-knows-what growing near the Hall. Was gonna take a Sheep home for Sunday lunch, but they were quite fast despite their plumpness !
The toastie at the Countess wasn't what I was expecting, but the extra-special salad and Crisp made up for it. Thought Scubz was gonna get a slap after the comment about the 4 dogs, especially after the comments about men earlier on the walk :P
Some nice fresh air in the afternoon, especially when we were looking at the follies etc and could see the brown layer on the Horizon :gag:
Took a few snaps along the way - see link below :

Hope to see everyone on a walk again soon

Cheers  Yeah it was fab, really nice walk. Hope weather is nice again next weekend, although forecast is snow wednesday and thursday
