View Full Version : Firth Park Shopping Centre- has it had its day?
Le Baron 17-01-2007, 17:18 Has Firth Park had it's day as a Shopping Centre? What are your opinions about the area, are there any shops worth visiting?
I'm asking this as I am thinking of taking on a shop on in the area.
neeeeeeeeeek 17-01-2007, 17:23 It's quite busy but most of the shops sell cheap crap. What were you thinking of opening?
alirosdan 17-01-2007, 17:35 It could do with a bit more variety bringing to it. While ever there is a bank, decent supermarket, pet shop, library and butchers, I will carry on going there. As neeeeeeeeeek says, there are a lot of tacky shops in the area. I would be interested in what type of shop you are thinking of opening.

Ya having a laugh surely?
It's time Morissons or Asda moved in.
Somerfields and the Co-op are a joke!
Le Baron 18-01-2007, 07:29 I was thinking of a clothes shop, but notice there are 3 clothing retailers on Bellhouse, two of which look tacky, a lot of competition, presently doing some research before I decide whether or not to go ahead with this area.
carpetviper 18-01-2007, 09:20 Firth park has always been busy on saturdays what really needs to happen is a cash injection from SCC and reface and modernise all the shop fronts then put 24 hour patrols around the area to stop trouble. See firthpark in the daytime is fairly ok at night it kinda transfors to somewhere dark and quite scary like all the demons come out at night and prowl the area lol.

I do my 'big shop' at Morrisons and Asda, but Somerfield have some decent offers when you are going for midweek bits.
Personally I would say you would struggle to find a sufficiently large enough market if you are looking at a clothes shop. With direct competition from 2 other already established shops unless you were selling "cheaper" designer clothes it is unlikely you would have anything original.
Whilst I realise this isn't very specific I can tell you what I would think you would find.
Le Baron 18-01-2007, 16:49 Thanks for your comments Wendy, I 'm now of the same opinion having had a mooch round the competiton, Outfit seem to offer cheap clothing of poor quality, something I would expect at a seaside market, Creations seem to be more teen/early 20's orientated, the shop is cram packed with stuff, I think a lot of it is old stock that can't be sold and she is just hanging on to it, also the lady is very rude and arrogant and seems hell bent on making a sale, not leaving customers to browse, the quality is also not too clever, noticed a lot of cheap nasty stuff in there. I was a bit more impressed wit Rachel's, not over stocked and her stuff was of good quality and reasonably priced, run by a nice lady who seems to know her stuff. If I'm to take on a shop in this area I'll have to get my thinking cap on and try to find a niche, meanwhile having a look at Hillsborough/Walkley and Crookes. Thanks for your comments.

westilad80 23-01-2007, 11:36 never knew fitrh park had a shopping center
It doesn't, it's Bellhouse Road with shops and 1 road paralelle to it. It's like saying Woodseats has a shopping centre, it's just a road.
You could call it a shopping square as that's what is!!
Some of these threads make me laugh!!!
Keep them coming
fox20thc 23-01-2007, 11:41 Slightly OT but connected:
Did you know that Hillsborough is a town? :hihi: We have a Hillsborough Town Centre Manager and everything!

Hillsborough could do with a decent childrens clothes shop as there is only woolworths in the main shopping centre. (just an idea) :D
DanDonovan 29-01-2007, 20:27 The council have just had a massive survey done on Firth Park Centre - and they are thinking of turning it into a mini-city that will serve the Shiregreen area.
The idea is to prove the image of firth park by giving it back to the community, to increase the economic viability, long term regeneration strategy, new developments improve quality of housing, retail and community offers, to make the area more pedestrian friendly.
They want to improve church and first start centre, reorganise and rationalise the centre and make improvements to bus stops on stubbins lane and bellhouse road.
They plan to redevelop or improve unattractive buildngs, particularly on stubbins lane, find new public spaces and introduce public art. They also want to improve the front quadrant of firth park centre.
They think it's vital to keep supermarket, banks and building societies - and the identity of bellhouse road.
They know they need to redevelop Stubbins lane parade – they could make it all houses or could improve current facilities. Could try to get bigger shops, but it would be difficult because of space.
Residents complained about the supermarket/bowling alley giving bad image when entering the centre – plans are to redevelop the front so you cannot see it and also to provide and a basement car park for supermarket and alley.
They will turn Sicey Avenue into a pedsestrian area – this means the area looks nicer, and that traffic would flow easily one way. Would also mean the retail bit of the centre could be concentrated on stubbins lane and bellhouse road.
The vision is to create a good place to shop and get groceries, a good place for community services and a good place for transport.
Any thoughts on this?

I:E TIMBERLAND, RALPH LAUREN, you know the stuff... is available in large sizes but nobody stocks them, i used to get all my stuff from next but about 2yrs ago they stopped having them instore and told me they could get them in for next wk???? so i stopped using them. in todays society (obesity at its worst) you could realy be the next BIG (excuse the pun) name
