This is probably gonna sound really stupid but I am technologically retarded
How do you get it in word so that you can split the screen and the footnotes are there all the time without having to scroll down to look at them. I know I've done it before but can't remember how !
Help very much appreciated!

In "Normal View", if you look just above the top of the scroll bar, you will see a little grey 'tab'.

Pull it down!
