No way are there 36,000 people posting on SF. How many do you really think are regular and would it be desirable to automatically remove members who haven't posted for a while (eg a year).?

....or not?

Don't forget those silly people who have duplicate ID's

I didn't start posting for about 8 months after I joined, I was a lurker :D

Dunno.

We prune off dead accounts every few months.

We could probably do some really fiddly SQL statements to see how many people have posted in such and such a timescale but we can't be bothered. :)

Every now and again we kill off a 'dead' account only to have the user return two days later saying 'I need to post and can't!'. As the user data doesn't take a vast amount of room up, we let it ride but, like I said, we do have some heavy clean up sessions every now and again when the user count drops like a rock. :)

Typically I reckon we get about 2000 individual users a day active on SF, but different users from day to day, if that makes any sense at all. :)

We also get a few 'spammers' every day who sign up and get banned immediately, but their accounts get purged with all the other 'dead' ones.

The latest user ID issued is 41072, so the difference between that and the user count is the number of accounts we've binned.

No it wouldnt, just because you dont hear from a friend or relative for sometime, doesnt mean you are never going to see them again.
From what I have seen on here, when someone has not posted for a while, and then returns, they are made most welcome.

As for advertisers, ask geoff. :)

We have obviously got statistics available - but we just tend to keep them to ourselves. :)

I'd be suprised if out of that 36,000 more than 500 post on a regular basis.

DELETE FROM LIVE.SFORUM
WHERE LST_UPD_DT < (CURRENT_TIMESTAMP - 1 YEAR)

That sort of thing should do the trick.

I personally don't post regularly but still view a couple of times a week to see what is taking peoples interest.
There are many who are not registered who drop in for a look these must increase hits on the sf many times more than the membership

It was the 'can't be bothered' bit that gave it away, wasn't it? :D
