View Full Version : Moving to Sheffield!
Cheshirechic 26-09-2004, 22:18 My husband has taken a job in "sunny" sheffield and it looks like we are going to have to move too. At present we live in lovely rural Cheshire in a beautiful, quiet village where there is little crime,a great pub and a fantastic well performing small school.Recently I visited Sheffied to have a look and to be honest, I just was so intimidated! I really dont want to move! Im sure there are some lovely people and places there but I didnt see them on this particular day!
Can anyone suggest some nice village type areas where we could look for property to buy, we need to be fairly handy for the Hillsborough area. We have a 2yr old so I would like to know of any good nurseries and toddler groups in the area. My other half wants a decent gym.... the kind where barbells are favoured over treadmills! I hope I have not offended anyone! You are probably going to advise me to stay put, unfortunately thats not an option so I will have to be more open minded!
I'm sure it's a natural reaction if you are moving away from somewhere you know and are happy to somewhere strange.
If you want to be handy for Hillsborough, but in a rural location, my initial thoughts would be Bradfield village.
Alternatively a peak district village around the Bamford area is still a realistic driving distance from Hillsborough I suppose, although it might be a less attractive commute when it snows.
Otherwise try the south side of Sheffield - the leafy surburbs of Dore, Totley, Bradway or Whirlow perhaps.
threecolours 26-09-2004, 22:28 Hi there
I'm originally from village just outside chester and yes...Sheffield is very different to the sort of environment you may be used to. I now would not leave Sheffield...like any big city it has its good and bad (or not so good!) areas. Take a look at the living/moving in Sheff part of the forum for some ideas...
I live the other side of the city to where you probably want..but Mosborough is on the edge of Sheffield and the very edges of it has a (very) slightly rural feel to it. Just built a primary school - don't know what its like though. What about Ridgeway/Ford area? This also has has a 'rural feel' to it - I know that has a small school..anyone know if it is any good?
I know when I first moved here...renting was the best option until I got a feel for the place and then decided where to settle. Don't worry though it's great here - honest!
Try the various Peak villages like Hathersage and Castleton. Also look at south westerly suburbs like Fulwood, Ecclesall, Whirlow and Dore. If you need to be even closer to Hillsborough or have a tighter budget, try Loxley or Stannington.

No, that wasn't my post. The lefty do-gooder quote is my signature and appears below every post I make. Still have the good grace to take on board what I actually said in my *post* (not signature), since I took time out of my life to offer you help.
Cheshirechic 26-09-2004, 23:10 Hey sorry!

Cheshirechic 27-09-2004, 17:23 Hi
Thanks for that info!
Can you tell me what roads they are on so I can find them in my A-Z! Chesh
Hi Cheshirechic
I'm a Cheshire man, came over here when I met my future wife a few years ago. Wouldn't be anywhere else at the moment. Sheffield has its very clean, quiet, crime free areas, mainly in the S10 area. As mentioned above, places like Dore, Fulwood, Lodge Moor (where I live) are leafy and safe but tend to be pricey and you don't mention your budget and what type of property you're after. Also mentioned are the villages of Bradfield and there's others like Storrs and the outskirts of Oughtibridge etc. Another option are the villages north of Sheffield. I lived in a place called Penistone for 9 years and am still fond of the place. It's about 10 miles north of Hilsborough and there's a few few more villages around it, such as Wortley and Thurgoland. It's very rural, on the edge of the Peak District
Hope this helps
Col S
I would recommend Bradfield if you need to be near Hillsborough. I have lived there for 6 months now and it is an absolutey beautiful place to live. You couldn't think of a better place to bring up a child. There is a great pub and a post office within walking distance and three dams to jog round if you are up to it! Everything else you need is only five minutes away in Hillsborough, and it is only £10 in a taxi from the city centre after a night out! S10 is the obvious choice though.
Cheshirechic 28-09-2004, 16:24 Thankyou all very much for your replies! Lots to look at. Im going over tomorrow for a few days so I will let you know how I get on x Chesh
Bradfield (lower & higher) are nice.
Stannington has been slowly going downhill for the past few years. Storrs and Dungworth (just a couple of miles from Stannington) are both nice, open, rural areas too.
Parts of Grenoside are also pretty good.
Then, there's always Ecclesfield (should be low crime due to major Police station).
All are pretty close to Hillsborough.
I think Bradfield (upper and Lower ) is an exelent recomendation by everyone.
Quiet picture postcard village and just one long road into Hillsborough.
I'm going to have to big up Lodge Moor though, as I live there with my other half and two one year old girls.
Their is a new estate on the old Lodge Moor Hospital site that you should take a look at.
It's on the boundary of the Peak district, which means their won't be any more building around it.
Their is a new nursery actually on the estate and also a sports field and childrens play park.
Your 10 mins away ( by Car ) from Stanedge edge, famous Peak District walking, climbing, glideing ect... area.
Their is also a bigger sports field 2 mins away with the best pub in Sheff ( if you like em old fashioned ) and a wood for exploring.
Another great place is Wyming Brook 5 mins up the road, the whole area is one big Adventure Park for kids to grow up around.
Not got into the schools thing yet, but they have some of the best records.
Their's plenty of private schools in the same area, if that is your thing?
It is situated high above Sheffield centre on one side of the Rivlin Valley, you can look down upon the A57 ( the Snake Pass ) as it winds into Glossop (near Manchester ) which I think is only 25 miles away.
Their is a great steep hill called Lodge Lane which drops down to the Rivlin Valley and from there you can follow the A57 into Hillsborough.
The 51 bus service runs very reguarly which stops at the terminus on the new estate.
It takes between 20 and 30 mins to get into the Sheffield centre as it takes a direct route.
I think you might be getting the point now, I'll shut up.
Good Luck.

I don’t know the last time you visited Stannington, Mr Sccsux, but your above statement couldn’t be further from the truth. Stannington Village enjoys similar scenery to Lodge Moor, only 5 minutes and you are in Derbyshire. The crime rate is more or less zero and has the added bonus of being in the catchment area for one of the finest secondary schools in Sheffield. The house prices have shot up over the last 5 years above the national average. So I can only presume that you haven’t visited the village for years Mr Sccsux or your vision is blinkered.

How did your recent trip to Sheffield go. Was it any better the second time round ?
espadrille 12-10-2004, 05:44 I am selling a lovely 3 bed semi at Meersbrook.I work at Hillsborough and it takes me around 25 mins to get there in the rush hour.
Meersbrook is a great place( not the most expensive)The only reason I am moving is that my son hasa special need and attends a differnt school at Broomhill so we are moving to save him so much travel.
If you are wanting to buy a house in the area of Meersbrook, please let me know.It has a lovely garden ,well stocked with a childrens tree house and very big rooms. Also has 2 bathrooms.
Post me a message if you are interested.
It is only 10 mins drive from Dore and Totlet where you can easily access the countryside
walkley is sweet and village like yet so near the city
Hi - I've just read your email from September 2004. My husband and I are likely to be moving to Sheffield from Worcestershire. I've been feeling the same way as you - did you manage to find somewhere nice? I've got two children, a son nearly 3 and a daughter 14 months, and I've got to find toddler groups, etc!
Hope to hear from you.
Louise
DannyBoy 13-10-2004, 19:58 Loxley is lovely, and very quiet. Villagey feel with the post-office etc. It's also in the catchment for the renowned school mentioned by MrA above (Bradfield Secondary, which is actually nearer Worrall than Bradfield)... Houses here don't come up very often, though.
