Hi

As a local joiner with my own business i am really interested to know the general view of local people on what they consider is a reasonable day rate for all tradesmen in the sheffield area.

Whether it be a builder, joiner, plumber, electrician, painter and decorater etc, what would you be happy to pay someone for a days labour and for a good quality job for 1 person ?

Eg:
£50 per day ?
£75 per day ?
£100 per day ?
125 per day?
£150 per day?
£200 per day ?
etc etc

Many thanks to everyone who responds to this thread

My brother is a joiner and he is paid approx £12 an hour so £100-£125 a day is about par.

Between £50 and £75 a day - afterall that salaries at £13k - £19.5k... how much do you expect??

PS. By day, do you mean 7 - 8 hours work, or 3 hours work, 3 hours reading the Sun and helping yourself to cuppas, and 1-2 hours harassing female passers-by? ;)

I think you are getting chippies mixed up with brickies!

Depends on location Coggy m8.

If you are in the South you would inevitably charge more, higer living costs and all that.

In the north you could argue that you could charge less, but a quality worksman always gets work, and even if he charges more, you can be assured of a good job.

Once you have a good reputation in place, you can charge more because of your reliability, standard of work, and trustworthynessin comparison with XYZ Joiners Co. who sometimes turn up and sometimes don't. You would be offering something completely different in that case, so the charges would not be comparable.

Bit like asking Currys to price match a TV that Comet sell £100 cheaper but don't have in stock, they won't do it.

Anyway, back to topic, I reckon a good joiner would be around £100-£125 / day or cheaper for longer contracts of course.

Pretty much second what '1Man' has said particularly about charging more once you have a good reputation. I've got a quote for some tiling....2 days work apparently and he wants £275 (may be able to knock it down slightly!). I provide the tiles and he provides the grouting(?)...he's got a good reputation and I've seen his work. He turned up to give me a quote when he said he would and has a long waiting list..I'd rather pay a bit more and get a good job done and have people turn up when they say they will! Even so..£135/day does seem a bit steep...?

I'd start with a lower rate and gradually increase as word about your great work and customer service spreads.

Any tradesman who takes three hours to read the Sun wouldn't see the colour of my money :P
