ReginaldD 15-01-2007, 22:49 Aye, it is actually finished and to be fair I actually think it looks quite nice. If I'd never been to Sheff and came out the train station and saw that I'd get a decent first impression. Let's face it, it can't really look worse than it has in the past, I think peoples opinions are a bit mixed on it though. It will be good to see it in the summer, especially the big mirror wall things with the water running down them. foo_fighter 15-01-2007, 22:51 I'm not living in sunny Sheffield at the minute, so was just wondering if the world's longest decorating scheme was actually finished. Thanks for that really helpful question/comment... ...hope where you're living is really lovely, and really well "decorated"... ...bye. :loopy: ReginaldD 15-01-2007, 23:14  Well I was a bit slow at first there, but your comments did sound like the train station job. Anyhu I'm proud to live in Sheffield and it sounds like you'd like to live here.............. you must still have an interest in Sheff if your on here. I can assure there are plenty of worse places, or maybe your a bit sheltered and you've not seen any of the world to know that! Halibut 15-01-2007, 23:18 Aye, it is actually finished and to be fair I actually think it looks quite nice. ''quite nice'' - talk about damning with faint praise...I think it looks brilliant, both at night and in the daytime. If you catch the sun on that mirrored blade at the right angle it's stunning. Money well spent. redrobbo 15-01-2007, 23:26 Having alighted at Sheffield railway station on Monday morning, it was a very pleasing sight which caught my eyes - even though I've been to look at the new features several times already. I suddenly realised that this is what visitors to the city will see when they step out of the station, and I too think it a brilliant result, and money worth spending. Stenner 15-01-2007, 23:43 Aye, it is actually finished and to be fair I actually think it looks quite nice. Strange - we drove past last night and we couldn't tell if it was finished or not - it was in darkness  . There wasn't even any street lights on in the whole area :loopy: !!! Add to that, there are loads of road works still around, there is still plastic covering the majority of the steel wall thing - need I go on!!!! It also looked like huge plastic sheets were covering some of the glass on the inside of the building too - but that may be something else all together, I only know what it looked like from the outside!! redrobbo 15-01-2007, 23:55 Strange - we drove past last night and we couldn't tell if it was finished or not - it was in darkness  . The running water on the steel structure isn't yet working on the outside. You need to get out of your car and view the inside area of the steel structure, and everything else. You also need to view during the day and at night night - it's spectacular when it's dark! yummyyumyum 16-01-2007, 01:36 so water will run down the outside of the mirrored wall thingy? i was hoping so as i think it looks lovely(only seen it lit up at night) on the inside with water falls etc and thought it would be a shame if the running water didnt go down both sides of the wall. Strix 16-01-2007, 02:02 Is the running water to stop it being spray painted? ;) Sometimes you may be able to see bits of sheaf square on the traffic cameras as there is one covering this bit of town :) http://sccplugins.sheffield.gov.uk/utc/cam01.htm sccsux 16-01-2007, 07:15 even though I've been to look at the new features several times already. You have too much time on your hands then:hihi:. Personally, I like the station, though I don't like the "water feature", at all:). Yes it isn't better in daylight builders still wandering round filling holes in. Oh by the way what was everybody singing and dancing about when you go pass. Steel still covered partially in wrapping and all you see is a steel wall. IF IT AIN'T READY WHY LAUNCH IT IN A FANFARE AND PARTY. That's it's Sheffield council going off rush rush rush. Will this be the next non event failure like the centre for popular music and Sheffield Airport. Mr Goose 16-01-2007, 07:31 I think the new stuff looks good at the station... I would like to go for a splash about in it. philyyy 16-01-2007, 08:11 Thanks for the proper answers. Will this be the next non event failure like the centre for popular music and Sheffield Airport. I'm not sure it can fail. Its not as if no-one can use it and they have to close it down, its just an area. It'd be like saying Arundel Gate is a failiure for being a non event. Singletrack 16-01-2007, 08:44 Isn't a shame though. In home home of Steel, that a large Steel structure outside the station was actually made in Wales. There SCC logic for you. 367squadron 16-01-2007, 10:00 The steel was made in Sheffield but the structure was actually put together in Bristol. BasilRathbon 16-01-2007, 10:04 Not only is that steel wall hideous to look at, it's totally impractical in that it stops you from crossing the road where you want to, which effectively means people missing their trains because they have to make a huge detour to the 'proper' crossing. Singletrack 16-01-2007, 10:06 thanx for coorecting me theripsaw 16-01-2007, 10:47 Not only is that steel wall hideous to look at, it's totally impractical in that it stops you from crossing the road where you want to, which effectively means people missing their trains because they have to make a huge detour to the 'proper' crossing. You are supposed to cross the road at crossings if provided. Its hardly a huge detour between the old and the new crossing. I'd say its about an extra 30 seconds walking. If you time your travels to that accuracy youre bound to miss a few connections. trainzfast 16-01-2007, 11:06 i think it would look and feel a lot better if someone would sort out those confounded taxis. parking all over the roads and pavements outside making walking to the carpark a fight for your life clogginchris 16-01-2007, 12:03 Just to confirm, The Cutting Edge won't have running water down the road side of it, just the station side. The covering is due to completely come off in February, and the side nearest the wall will have an etched finish on it to stop glare for drivers. There's still some minor adjustments to make to it to ensure that the water runs evenly which it's not doing at the moment. 367squadron 16-01-2007, 12:42 Not only is that steel wall hideous to look at, it's totally impractical in that it stops you from crossing the road where you want to, which effectively means people missing their trains because they have to make a huge detour to the 'proper' crossing. The 'hideous' steel wall is there to direct visitors in the heart of the city and to block views of the busy ring road that cuts just outside the station. I certainly wouldn't risk my life running across that road just for the sake of a train. If you think you might miss your train then it's simple - Plan ahead! Bilge 16-01-2007, 12:58 I think it's a brilliantly successful design - for many different reasons and I expect it to win awards. When the new building goes up where Dyson house was and the new hotel where the NMB is, it'll be an even better space. By the way, the sharp (Blades?) end of the cutting edge has a red light in it, while the 'O' end (for Owls?) has a blue light. Or am I reading too much into this? Still no station bar yet though. Wadsleyite 16-01-2007, 13:06 The station looks fine - I just wish they would clean the toilets... 367squadron 16-01-2007, 14:20 Yes, i would love some more shops and bars down there. Maybe when the new building where Dyson once stood and the Hotel will have shops/restaurants on the 1st and ground floors. Who knows! I'd expect there to be a few cafe/bars wth outside seating situated in the new square - that would be nice. Meaks 16-01-2007, 15:56 They could get rid of Burger Ming to start with, and turn that into a bar. WallBuilder 16-01-2007, 16:01 I had a little wander round there a few days ago and thought it looked quite impressive and it's a huge improvement on the old vista. I'll take another wander when the work is completed as there are still a lot of conttractors working in the area. I thought on the plans there was something about an outside seating area and an outside cafe and as the steel wall not only blocks the view of traffic rushing past but also cuts down on the noise then it could be a nice place to sit, we'll have to wait and see. I've heard as well that there are going to be bollards put up on the walk to the car park so that should mean pedestrians shouldn't have to detour to avoid badly parked vehicles. foo_fighter 16-01-2007, 17:40 ...Thanks for not answering at all Foo Fighter you'd have been better saving your fingers rather than writing nothing and trying to be superior. That figures as Bristol also have this kind of thing in their city centre. It's nice in the Summer as there's loads of kids playing in it, same as the Peace Gardens fountain here. :) I wish they'd hurry up and get the plastic off the wall though as I want to see what it looks like when it's done. Haven't had time to go for a wander around yet since it opened. I'm not trying... ...and you are a troll. If you miss the 16.40 one from London St Pancras, you have to wait at least 40 minutes for the next one (17.18 to Liverpool Lime St - which is always a few minutes late). Considering how many people there are hanging around for that train I really am suprised something hasn't been done about it. Chesterfield station is quite possibly the most depressing place on the planet. (Oh yeah, and if that wierd looking train spotter dude is reading this - stop staring at me) Stormy 16-01-2007, 18:23 Ill add my 2 cents, I think the station area is so so much better than it ever has been (well, as far back as I can remember anyway.) Fair play to the designers, planners and everyone else involved I personally think it was money well spent, as now visitors to our city will have a fantastic first impression, and it might blow away those old Full Monty cobwebs. One question to anyone involved with the area, I heard rumours that the main road is going to become single carrigeway, is this true? Thanks. JoeP 16-01-2007, 18:32 OK gentlemen, I've pulled a few posts so let's just calm down, please. Thanks. Considering how many people there are hanging around for that train I really am suprised something hasn't been done about it. I'm hardly surprised. The train operating companies' strategy to maximise their profits seems to consist of cramming as many people into as few trains as possible. Andy C 16-01-2007, 19:04 I had a little wander round there a few days ago and thought it looked quite impressive and it's a huge improvement on the old vista. There is allready seating provided in the square, and I seem to recall seeing the plans ages ago (possibly on the BBC SY website) involving a new office block with a cafe bar in the ground floor having outside tables, I guess this is to go up in the building site next to the square. Andy C 16-01-2007, 19:07 i think it would look and feel a lot better if someone would sort out those confounded taxis. parking all over the roads and pavements outside making walking to the carpark a fight for your life Hmm, too many taxis queuing up at off peak times and not enough around at peak time it seems to me! Andy C 16-01-2007, 19:11 I just wish there were more trains to Sheffield from Chesterfield around rush hour time. Chesterfield station is quite possibly the most depressing place on the planet. (Oh yeah, and if that wierd looking train spotter dude is reading this - stop staring at me) Problem is all the trains that pass through Chesterfield are designed to cater for long distance travellers and not local commuters. The timetable should be better from December 2008 when the new Northern Leeds-Nottingham service starts up, which will provide a local service calling at Dronfield and combined with the Liverpool-Norwich will mean Sheffield-Chesterfield-Nottingham will be half hourly instead of hourly. Andy C 16-01-2007, 19:17 I'm hardly surprised. The train operating companies' strategy to maximise their profits seems to consist of cramming as many people into as few trains as possible. To be fair in the example quoted, most people finish work at about 5pm and by the time they get to the station 5:18pm is about right. If that is full then there are trains close behind at 5:31pm and 5:35pm - that's three trains in 20 minutes providing a total of about 700 seats. troubledjoe 16-01-2007, 19:18 ''quite nice'' - talk about damning with faint praise...I think it looks brilliant, both at night and in the daytime. Andy C 16-01-2007, 19:26 The station looks fine - I just wish they would clean the toilets... They do - it's just some of the 'less socially aware' people mess them up quicker than they can be cleaned! Andy C 16-01-2007, 19:29 It also looked like huge plastic sheets were covering some of the glass on the inside of the building too - but that may be something else all together, I only know what it looked like from the outside!! I heard somewhere - possibly Radio Sheffield - that the blue sheets is a tempory fix to stop the sun/reflections shining directly into the station ticket office area and rendering the touch screen ticket machines unusable until the proper blinds can be fitted. |
