View Full Version : Problem installing CD Drive
ToryCynic 26-09-2004, 20:39 Hi.
I thought I'd stick a second CD drive in.
So,I wanted my current one as the "slave" and the *new* one as the "master".
So, I open the case, move the current one to the second free bay and connect it all up - moving the jumper to slave. I putt the *new* (old) one out of the old PB and shove it in the top bay, leaving the jumper in the master position.
Excellent!
Turn the machine on, Windows detects it. Brilliant.
Shove a CD in and the green LED blinks yet nothing plays!
Shove that CD in the original one (now the slave) and it works perfectly!
Someone said check the connections. Yup, checked them. Fired it up , shoved a CD in the top one - nothing - nothing at all. Pressed eject (Nothing) Ah! Then. literally 11 mins later Radiohead popped out whilst I was working!
So, open up the case, stick that drive to the side, get the CD drive out of the 98 stick it as the master. Windows detects it. Blah, blah.
This time, when i stick a CD in I get the dialog box of "What do you want Windows to do with this CD" - lay in iTunes, WMP etc etc.. it spun round but nothing. Yet when I stiick in MS Office, you get the "doolado" tune and away it goes . Yet on other data CDs nothing.
Or is it just a case of fiddling in the device manager? However, that recognises it (and it recognised the previous one that took 11 mins to
eject .)
Cheers
Alex
Martin_s 26-09-2004, 21:23 If you have access to a CD cleaner type CD it's always worth putting it in and letting it do its thing...
ToryCynic 26-09-2004, 21:30 Ah right cheers. Do you reckon the first one that took 11 mins. was just knacered?

To be honest... if your CD drive doesn't work after cleaning it and only has sporadic functionality, I'd go the replacement route..
They're cheap enough... although I appreciate that I'm talking from the viewpoint of having recently had the cat assist in frying a hard drive... which was "fun" :suspect:
Captain_Scarlet 26-09-2004, 21:55 A detail springs to mind, you didn't say what type of CD you put in the drive:
commercial CD (autorun)
Audio CD (album)
data CD (no autorun)
You might, I say you might, have no problem at all ;)

Ah... just out of interest it's not copy protected it is?
There are a number of CD's that have been written in a way as to make it impossible to play them on most CD players... although that didn't last too long :P
As for the cat thing... ah well... nobody was hurt in the frying of the hard drive and it was an object lesson in safety amongst other things... So no far out hair styles to worry about... ;)
Have you checked your settings for autoplay in windows? If you have xp right click on the drive in question and go to properties and have a look under the autoplay tab seen what it defaults to.

No, it's not copy-protected. (1994), but i got it off of Amazon for a couple of quid or so !
Re: The auto-play settings, it works in everything but iTunes, after looking at the iTunes settings, it seems it only plays from the burner drive (the slave).

Couple of quid?! Was it second hand?!
That might be your problem, second hand stuff is known to be a pain in the wotsits, especially PC related gubbins.

It was the CD that was second hand - £2 on Amazon :)

coopster1974 28-09-2004, 00:42 I'd be tempted to reiterate the post above about cleaning.
I was downloading an MP3 disk which seemed to be spotless, kept getting a CRC error message (totally wierd - thought CRC's came from lack of resistance on a cable!!), took the CD out, gave it a cursory clean and bingo!!!
ToryCynic 28-09-2004, 22:55 Hiya,
Ran one of those CD cleaning discs - and it worked . Both the master & slave are working excellently now, ta. :D
Now, where did that VB thread go!
Cheers
Alex
