Seeing as most of Florida is evacuated and/or underwater and the hurricane season has two more months to go, I wonder how the dodgiest election system in the States is going to manage to get a sane result out of the Presidential election in five weeks.

Presidents always go to disaster areas to survey damage and talk to the people. Last week Bush landed at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola and did a tour of the beaches from here all the way to Gulf Shores in Alabama. He handed out water and ice to people who had already stood in queues for hours in the heat. It is good for him to be seen to be compassionate and caring. The fact that it is an election year and his brother is the Governor of Florida will work in his favour. It's the least he can do though to come and see the devastation. The State of Florida has been given millions of dollars in disaster relief. Many Floridians will be swayed by all the attention they are getting here. People who didn't know who to vote for will remember the nice man that gave them water when they were desperate. They say that disasters are good for the economy. Businesses start to recover and small businesses are spawned all over the place with people losing their jobs and then starting their own. Right now the business to be in is roofing and building contracting. The Federal Government is giving money away left and right to get people back to work or start their own. That's good for the Republicans who support free enterprise. In times like this people decide quite quickly who to vote for.

If most of the population of Florida is elsewhere and the polling stations are underwater, how are they going to run an election?

Iin that case they'll likely be campaigning for the floating voters only.
