This mild winter means that the moss is getting the upper hand on a lot of my lawn.

Most of the moss killers for sale say that they should only be used during the growing season (say, after April).

But as the moss is growing now, would I be able to do any damage to it by treating it now?

What i do at this time of the year is get a fine lawn rake and really go hard on the moss. Dont hold back, really claw it out of the lawn.
Itll weaken it so the weed and feed and moss killer combo works better, plus itll help areate the roots a little.

Along with Jabber's advice it's not the time really to worry about it. After all stomping around your lawn when it's soaking wet is only going to compact the soil and leave is more susceptable to more moss growing. Spreading some fine lawn sand on it will help and also help to dry off the surface (and kill the moss) and also forking the surface to put holes in to help drainage will help.

Otherwise its best to leave it til March when things warm up and the moss killer will do it's job. After all the grass isn't doing too much this time of year and there is plenty of time for the grass to grow in the spring.
It can take a while to get the lawn right so a treatment in spring (poss 2 if you can squeeze it in and it's dry enough) then another in the Autumn (plus feeding of the grass in summer) and you will see a transformation next year and the year after if you keep it up!

Yeah - stick it down and watch your grass burn away then freeze in this weather... that'll really make it look good :loopy:

Well ok, it IS a little non-growingly cold this week :?

Tell me more about this burning? What causes this?

I'm raking mine up - its that lovely springy moss - looks like the stuff that they use to line hanging baskets, so I might dry it and save it for the summer.

Part of the chemical process of the weedkiller / mosskiller will affect the grass (hence why you should water it after a few days). Doing it at this time of year when then temperature will vary more from hot to cold will put more stress on the grass so it won't be able to cope. So for the sake of your grass wait til March at least (or even better til the weather comes warm and the grass starts to green!)
