View Full Version : What do you think of Wadsley Bridge S6? funkyukgal 14-01-2007, 06:47 Im thinking of moving there, like to know what the area is like? does the tram go through there? The tram doesn't run to Wadsley Bridge. I can't comment on the buses. funkyukgal 14-01-2007, 09:43 On Baxter Mews... silverknight 14-01-2007, 10:43 Guide to WADSLEY BRIDGE AREA Here is a guide to the Wadsley Bridge area which you may find useful and of interest. If you go back in time and look at Sheffield’s history you find that most of it is of Anglo - Saxon origin. In what we know today as Sheffield 6 some early settlements were Owlerton, Wadsley and Walkley. Names which end in ‘ley’ signifies a clearing in a forest and those that end in ‘ton’ means an enclosed farmstead. Moving on in time to 1900 this was when Owlerton, Hillsborough, parts of Wadsley and most of Ecclesfield became part of the City. Large parts of old Owlerton and Wadsley Bridge were demolished in the late 60’s and early 70’s. The old Wadsley Bridge was based around the river Don. Today it covers a larger area roughly from the river up to the shopping area around the White Horse Pub. Within a short walk you will find some of the other villages which have merged over the years into the new Wadsley Bridge going up the hill towards Grenoside and Wharncliffe Chase/Beeley Woods area are Birley Carr, Birley Edge. and Foxhill. Local Services Within Wadsley Bridge you will find most services are located within a short walk ( max 10mins). On the Kilner Way Retail Park site you will find a Somerfield, Comet, Halfords, and Gala Bingo! Further up Halifax road you will find the main local shopping area with a bakers, chemist, newsagent etc. In the last few years the big five banks have closed their local branches as they all have a branch in the main District Shopping Centre of Hillsborough. Cash Machines are located at the former Barclays Bank and at Law Bros Garage. Postal services are located at Birley Carr Post Office on Foxhill Road and at Wadsley Bridge PO which has relocated to the Spar shop located at Law Brothers BP Garage on Leppings Lane. Medical Services The following local GP medical centres serve this area of Sheffield 6 are: Trafalgar House MC 45 Halifax Road Wadsley Bridge MC 103 Halifax Road Foxhill MC 363 Halifax Road The nearest NHS dentist is Halifax Road Dental Practice at 95/98 Halifax Road.( you must be registered with the practice to get treatment) Future Development: Parts of Wadsley Bridge are within local regeneration status mainly the 60’s built council estate at Foxhill. Around 50% of the houses and flats on the estate have been demolished and redevelopment is planned in 2007. Other building developments in the area which I am aware of are: 1) Kilner Way Retail Park Full redevelopment of the whole site is planned in 2007 2) Asda and Tesco Both these supermarkets are known to be looking at sites in the area 3) Private Housing Final phase was completed in early 2005 on the site of the old mill on Foxhill Road (Baxter Mews) and part of the old railway sidings of the former Wadsley Bridge railway station. ( The station closed to passenger services in July 1959 . Today just a couple of freight trains a day go up this line to Stocksbridge Steel works. Within Stocksbridge a local group ( Don Valley Railway) has been formed to try and get the line reopened. If it does every reopen you could be in town within 10 minutes and Meadowhall within around 15/20 minutes!!!) Public Transport in the Area (as at end of Jan 2007) Several cross city services operate to the Wadsley Bridge area from Sheffield (all these suffer from delays at peak periods and on football days at the Wednesday Ground. The ones operated by FIRST SOUTH YORKSHIRE are as follows; 1/2 HILLSBORUGH to JORDANTHORPE Linking Hillsborough, Meadowhall, Darnall, Manor and Gleadless (Leppings Lane roundabout is the nearest stop- about 10 mins walk) The following are within 5 mins walk of Baxter Mews: 17 SHEFFIELD to MEADOWHALL via Hillsborough centre , Foxhill and Parson Cross. 20/20a HILLSBOROUGH - SOUTHEY GREEN - CITY - HEMSWORTH Serves Northern General Hospital 53 ECCLESFIELD - CITY - LOW EDGES 66 SHEFFIELD - HILLSBOROUGH - GRENOSIDE - HIGH GREEN - CHAPELTOWN - ROTHERHAM 77 CITY -CHAPELTOWN - HIGH GREEN The first bus in a morning to Sheffield is at 0515 (Mon to Sat)and the last bus from City to Wadsley Bridge is at 2340.
