View Full Version : Wing Mirror Vandals
Last weekend, on Saturday night, some thoughtful person walking along Ecclesall Road decided to kick my passenger-side wing mirror to bits. Cost for replacement: £200
Last night (Friday) car parked on Neill Road, they decided to do the same to the driver-side wing mirror. I'm somewhat disturbed by the latest attack, as no other cars appeared to be targeted.
Is it worth reporting to the police? Offering a reward for info? Anyone else's car been attacked around Hunters Bar?
goldenfleece 25-09-2004, 17:44 Is your car attracting some attention in any way to be done twice like this, or is just an average car?
1Man&hisBMW 25-09-2004, 17:49 you must drive a very expensive car! would could buy a whole vauxhall cavalier for that what you paid for the wind mirror!
anyway, do you have folding mirrors? maybe that would help in these circumstances? Alternatively maybe a car cover for a few weeks?
It's a Golf GTI, not especially flash, no custom mods or anything...
A mate suggested folding in the wing mirrors - he always does now after trouble a few years ago. I'm not sure this would prevent future attacks though :-(
goldenfleece 25-09-2004, 17:56 I have seen some CCTV Stickers on some cars parked in residential areas.....they suggest that the car is being monitored from a camera in the owners house......probably not, but its a visible deterrent perhaps?
I have had the same problem in Broomhall on a crap old Micra. Thats was a folding one. It's some mental defect that students have, related to their irrestible urge to kick bins over.
Sorry to hear about that.
I'm afraid that there is always the potential for this sort of unpleasant thing to happen when parking anywhere near places where drunken people may be in the vicinity.
About 6 years ago I was coming out of a pub in the town centre and was walking to my car which was parked about 200 metres away. I saw a drunken idiot kick the wing mirror of the car behind mine and then proceeded to kick my car wing mirror, smashing it into peices. He was with a group of 5 who legged it down the road.
These days I try to refrain from leaving the car anywhere near areas of this kind.
Don't get me started on students kicking bins over...
I'll give the Police a ring tomorrow, once the murderous rage has subsided, to see if they have any suggestions.
A few weeks ago every car parked on carr road walkley was "keyed" along the nearside, caused thousands of pounds of damage, roughly thirty cars got scratched, apparently last night on greenhouse street a line of cars had their wing mirrors smashed.
Just to add a group of local residents have a good idea as to who the culprits are, they have even taken it upon themselves to follow them home and note the addresses, this info will be passed on to the police, however without hard evidence it's unlikely they can do anything.
Draggletail 25-09-2004, 19:28 About a year ago we saw a youngish bloke run past us, as he got in front he kicked the wing mirrors of six different cars, at random. This was also on Neil Rd.
Someone who was with us ran after him and collared him, asking what he thought he was doing, and got the reply 'sorry, mate. it's out of character' - so he let him go!
Wonder if there is a 'serial wing mirror attcker' in hunters bar:suspect:
Someone nicked my wife's Ford Focus fog-lights the other day. Not sure if it happened at home or work or supermarket etc. They just left the wires dangling out of the front bumper.
Tossers......

Maybe they're trying to build a car!
1Man&hisBMW 25-09-2004, 22:30 Its crap when people do this to somebody else property.
You may be well advised to keep a look out on ebay for cheap sets of door mirrors if you live up that end of town.
I know how you must feel as if it happened to my car I too would be pretty well p'ssed off.
If they kick off a door mirror sometimes the unit isnt damaged but the force of it hitting the door leaves a dent which ends up costing £50 to have taken out.
Sad people.

On that note I'm surprised I didn't get asked what I was doing with my 2 friends carrying a car radiator by some kind people with blue lights on their car - anywhere between Prince of Wales and Manor Lane.
If I had been asked I would say "I'm on benefits and buying a car bit at a time"...
Droll I know but...
I parked my old car - a Silver Orion Ghia - J plate, no mods, opposite Broomill School while I did my usual Sunday drinking thing there (pick car up Monday) and returned to find the passenger side door lock had been gouged out! Annoying to say the least - but when I did the same thing 2 weeks later I returned to find the driver side lock had had the same done to it!
No other cars parked there were touched either time.
Both Locks had dropped into the inside of the door so the 'thieves' got away with nothing.
What I cant understand was that the car was open anyway, there was a decent stereo on view, dashboard with about a fiver on it, and a gold lighter there too - all which were ignored!
More puzzling was that if it was just the locks they were after - where were they going to get the keys from as I had them??
My son had his expensive car radio stolen while his car was parked on my drive,I had security lights ,but the little sods got underneath them & moved them with the clothes prop.I have since had the lights highered & had cctv on the front & back of my house & I put a sign up telling people the property was monitored at all times & I have no trouble since.CCTV camera,s cost me £30 from B&Q its cheaper than replacing a car part ,so I would recommend them if you park your car outside your property or on a drive.
Focus fog lights! That's a new one to add to the airbags and radios.
If you want to see something scary go to ebay and put
ford 6000 cd
into the search there.
When I last did this there was a guy who had three to sell at once - not very likely to be legit IMHO!

dent in the door......sounds daft but use a plunger and 9/10 times it'll suck it back out
cazzaworld 26-09-2004, 20:31 Well tonight when I finished work at Meadowhall, someone had spat heavily all over my scooter seat. Ugh gross!!!!

Thinking about this - the only realistic way it could be legit is if either he bought them as a bulk deal with/without other items or he removes and upgrades radios and flogs off those taken out (and left by the customer- probably with varying degrees of embarasment :) )
as an added note, if anyones got a spare 5000 or 6000 going I wouldnt mind it, mine was stolen :(
Internetowl 26-09-2004, 21:49 To the car owner who started the thread - have you upset anyone lately, drove a bit too fast or parked in their space ?
I'd start there and work backwards

Hehe true, if its a nicely curved dent. Problem with wing mirrors being booted ( and also base ball batted off as i have seen! ) is when they hit the door / wing on the car they leave a 'crease dent' so it never comes out unless pushes from the inside by those dent fixing people!
RPG - dunno if it's worth the hassle mate! We claimed on insurance, got a new one (really nice with MP3 player) that you can remove the front totally, and it does mean it's not worth nicking.
Just one problem..... they've broken in twice since the first theft, and ransacked car thinking we'd have been daft enough to leave it in the car!
T- a few weeks I'd say before it happens again.
This might be dumb question, but, don't car stereos have pin numbers these days so they won't work if you steal one unless you also steal the pin number ?

Anyone can take a radio to a decoding place and get it decoded for about £15. Also most codes for the radios are either written on top of the radio itself, or written in the back of the radio instructions handbook (which is normally in the car)
You can buy the software from ebay for a few pounds - and the central number strip isn't pinned so removing that makes no odds as any one will fit them!

Im a student Nick... I dont steal car radios, quite the opposite as it happened :/
According to the police its an organized gang of criminals, so that goes to prove you wrong (again).
You cant blame everything on your cut-short education Nick.
Although I agree with the latter statement.

You've got that wrong, Arse. The thieves and vandals are much more likely to be the dropouts who couldn't be bothered with education than the students. One word: chavs.
There is a very good possibility that the idiots who vandalised my car were students. This was on a week night and they were out on the town as students are notorious for doing during the week. They also couldn't take their ale too. :D
coopster1974 28-09-2004, 03:11 Thats the one thing I cant stand about students. I dont mind people going out for a skinful friday/saturday night and singing on the way home, its to be expected. But students seem happy to get drunk everynight of the week then proceed to **** people off who have to get up for work the next day.
Your wing mirror could have been due to a fresher carrying home the obligatory traffic cone!!!
I think it's more down to the fact where you have a student house, there'll be 4 CD's 4 Tellys etc..... So the amount they can nick per house is increased.
The police know who nicks the radios but if they get the evidence and get put away it's only for a short time.
Just walked down Neill road on my way home from work. It would appear that someone has taken great offence at students and has graffitied a load of houses down the road with things like ***** off students. Obviously the clever little individual(s) is annoyed about students vandalising things. I might stay up and see if I can catch the them at it again. I for one would like to have word with them and question why they have graffitied several houses that I know for a fact aren't even occupied by students. I really do worry about some peoples backwards thinking. I suppose it proves that it's not necessary to study for a degree to be an idiot, anyone can do it!
**Just decided to start a new thread with this, please excuse the repeat post. **
Yes, I've just seen this. It's pretty shocking. Maybe multiple cars were vandalised when mine was(?)
On our road (in meersbrook) we have had trouble with car wing mirrors and aerials being bent / kicked/ stolen, for the last year and a half. On sunday / Saturady mornings you can drive down the road and see about 10+ cars that have been missing / bent wing mirrors.
The trouble seemed to stop a little when the local pub stopped letting under 21's in without ID, but there is still the random attacks, and they have been throughout the summer so I guess it's not students.
The car theives have also let up a bit at the moment as they also target cars also on our road, they must of got sick of people chasing them down the road with big sticks and screaming at them as thats what we have now been reduced to doing when we catch them at it.
Strange thing is when I have rang the police to tell them about people breaking into cars they don't even bother going round to check it out, the cars just left in a mess for the person to find it and us to explain what we heard/ saw. (Opps tell a lie the police came around once to follow up something we saw!)
I was thinking of taking piccy's of the next car theives I catch at it, anyone have any ideas if I would be within the law to do this? the flash of the camera should scare them off I guess?
I can't wait till I get enough dosh to move to a house with a garage then my car will be safe!

If you're a student you will spot the lack of logic in what you're writing then RPG. I didn't say ALL students did things like that. I did suggest (as was probably correct) that it's mainly students that kick wing mirrors off cars.
I seriously doubt there's an organised criminal network carrying out such minor misdeeds as 20t0 suggests.
I actually moved out of Broomhill because of this problem. Every weekend without fail when the students were in town you'd get a wing mirror booted off a few of the cars on my road.
Every weekend. Without fail.
But when the students went home to mummy and daddy wingmirrors were safe.
It sounds trivial - it is a minor offence but when it happens to your car it's more than annoying.
The Universities have a responsibility to the community not to bring young thugs here every few months. How they do it is up to them.
One idea I've suggested is to ban students from drinking. Why do you lot need to drink if you're all so poor and working so hard?
NM
How would you enforce a ban on drinking? I know that drunk young people are annoying, but unless the government introduces a law banning drinking for the under 30's, it's not going to happen. I say young people because, it's young drunk people that cause trouble, not just students. As it is, in Sheffield, there is a large population of young drunk people studying. It has nothing to do with the fact that they are students, it's just the fact that they are young and drunk. it happens in my home town, which is not a student town. Young drunk people do stuff like kick wing mirrors off cars.

Sorry to be pedantic, but you can't have a "large population of young drunk people". That would imply that they are permanently under the influence, which is obviously not the case (even though it may seem like it).
“A large population of young people, many of whom get drunk” works better

We should bring in prohibition, for people who cannot behave when drinking, like they have in other countries.

What I'm suggesting for the dudents is that Universities enforce a no drinking law the punishment for which is expulsion from the Uni.
Simple.

Internetowl: no I haven't done anything stupid, or upset anyone AFAIK.
Heard back from Police today who were v.sympathetic, and reasonable, though of course without someone coming forward there's not much they can do*
They did say there had been a number of incidents of car vandalism in the area in the past couple of weeks, and that they will consider more resources around Hunters Bar as the problem appears to be escalating.
*on the off chance that anyone does have any information please contact me - I'll pay handsomely for information leading to the arrest of the perpetrator(s)...

And what about the rest of the population, is it ok for them act like idiots when drunk?
Nicholarse 30-09-2004, 18:25 I don't remember saying that Andy. Why would you suggest that? What an odd thing for YOU to suggest.
I think the laws of the land are enough to keep them in check personally.
Unlike the students whom we've identified here as a problem.
I debate things for a living sweetcheeks. That's called "check" lets see if we can make it "checkmate" before the end of the week shall we?

I have to agree that some of the responsibility for the actions of students lies with the universities. I don't want to suggest that the sort of vandalism we are talking about is only carried out by students. Having said that, those of us who live in student areas know full well that there are very few issues during university vacations.
Also, has anyone noticed that it gets worse with each new academic year? Dumbing down of higher education perhaps? After all if you drop your entry standards then surely you end up with fewer undergraduates that are really committed to their studies.

The point is, students can be a pain, this is true, non students can be a pain, this is also true. People generally can be pains. I've generally found that the majority of people behave quite acceptably. There are a few idiots that upset the rest of us, both students and non students. Obviously, if you take a group of 40,000 people from anywhere, the chances are that there will be a quite a few idiots. This doesn't mean that the rest of the 40,000 shouldn't be able to get on with whatever they do without being victimised. I made the comparison earlier about football hooligans. Just because they exist doesn't mean that the rest of us can't go and enjoy a football match.
Incidentally I wasn't aware that we were playing chess. So you debate in a professional capacity then; that’s nice! However, just because you debate things for a living doesn't mean you are always right. I'm sorry to break that news to you as you seem to be under some delusion that no one else can be right other than yourself. I'm afraid life isn't quite that simple; I suggest you shrug of your arrogance and open your mind a little. Thanks for the compliment about my cheeks by the way, they are indeed very sweet! :D

I hope so, in the past 3 years my car has been keyed and also the front wing dented badly while it was parked by some idiot who obviously drove off without a care in the world.. I like the area but expensive when factoring in vandalism repairs
garrence 03-10-2004, 21:21 We always get the most shouting at about 2.30am Wednesday night/Thursday morning. Wednesday is sports day at the universities and they carry on drinking til 2am. It seems the moron element is most attracted to sports night...
What is it about Neill Road? I saw someone smash a wing mirror on there in July. And I did nothing but fume about it, because it was a bunch of 5 skinheads who were acting as though they were looking for a fight and, as I was just with my girlfriend, I wasn't about to give them a fight. Made me mad tho..
We've only had one lot of wing mirrors being smashed up our road that I know of. Someone followed the culprit home and called the police the next day. They gave him a visit and he ended up spending all his grant cheque on replacement mirrors along with writing letters of apology :-)

Majerison? I liked your for the first 2 weeks when you hosted lively balanced debates. The pit of sh*t stirring, ego stroking it has turned into is shameful. So you don't debate things for a living. Fact.
You abuse the eejits from adjacent stones for a living now. ~Oh, and 'I think...' doesn't constitute evidence. I live in a non-student area and car damage and toppled bins happen at chucking out time here too. Evidence.
And how low can you go? Name calling? That's just childish.
