Happy Days! pensionipper 18-01-2007, 11:23 Hi PopT, never danced there but saw Cocker one time. He was good but the Grease Band were terrific! It was almost worth having to drink from those horrible plastic 'pots'...... Good days. only_me 18-01-2007, 12:24 Hi PopT, i think the Shades was on Ecclesall road, its now the site of napoleons casino. My dad often mentioned the club as it was owned by a friend of his called Max omare, Max went on to own other night clubs. Sorry i also dont know about the dancing but at least your thread has been bumped. mikeG 18-01-2007, 19:47 Dont think I ever got round to dancing there. Around 1969/70 used to call in Saturday nights after drinks in Crosspool Tavern, York, then walk down. After a few more ales and a goat curry I was fuelled up enough to walk back home to Fulwood. Couldn't do it now tho. Cliffhanger 18-01-2007, 21:31 Used to go there in the early '70's. Seem to remember that the Woolly Bully was pretty big back then. You kinda lined up in rows opposite each other then proceeded to kick the living crap out of the row opposite in a kinda can-can stylee. Hmmm rubydazzler 18-01-2007, 21:38 Oh yes, just loved that Woolly Bully dance - although it always seemed to end up with some people falling over and dragging everyone else down with them. Watch it now, watch it now, here she comes, you gotta take a chance, you're gonna learn to dance, oh woolly bully etc etc (or words to that effect :D) Used to do it at the Mojo too, iirc. Is Max Omare still around? Maybe he's a member of SF? only_me 18-01-2007, 22:31 Oh yes, just loved that Woolly Bully dance - although it always seemed to end up with some people falling over and dragging everyone else down with them. As far as im aware he is still around, his son Karl has the pub on the corner near to the leadmill (if he is still there) Harry1000 20-01-2007, 15:43 For a second I thought you were on about the "Shades Vaults" in Hartshead. That got bombed out in WWII! Ey up Ruby, I never knew it had words other than "Woolly Bully, Woolly Bully" ... :surprised rubydazzler 20-01-2007, 18:04 Ey up Ruby, I never knew it had words other than "Woolly Bully, Woolly Bully" ... :surprised  obviously I had the wrong words! You're right though, it was mostly "wooly bully" :hihi: Uno, dos, one, two, tres, quatro Matty told Hatty about a thing she saw. Had two big horns and a wooly jaw. Wooly bully, wooly bully. Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully. Hatty told Matty, "Let's don't take no chance. Let's not be L-seven, come and learn to dance." Wooly bully, wooly bully Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully. Matty told Hatty, "That's the thing to do. Get you someone really to pull the wool with you." Wooly bully, wooly bully. Wooly bully, wooly bully, wooly bully. I'm more of a Stones fan me sen - only did t' woollybully thing in vain hope of koppin' off with the girls. Now if you brought along a copy of Brown Sugar, I might turn up ........ grahamprie 17-05-2007, 14:27 Hi everyone, I was the DJ at SHADES for most of 1969. I installed a new sound system for Max in the spring, then took over from Jean who was the existing DJ, when she was taken ill. I never knew what happened to her, but you can blame me for the music... I moved to Essex in 1970 and lost contact with everyone, so if any of you have any stories to tell, or know anyone else who worked or went there I'd love to know. We had lots of bands while I was there, but the one I remember best was 'The Inner Mind' from Huddersfield - all white but great Reggae... I know Max went on to open Genevieve on Charter Square - named after his daughter, but I only went there twice on weekend visits - can anyone tell me when it closed? I don't remember Max having a son - he was probably born after I moved. All the best to everyone, Graham. vix2000 06-01-2010, 23:20 Know this is an old thread but its brought back some good memories. Me and my friend used to go there but were far too young really, about 14 I think. We went on a wednesday night but as it was a school night we had to catch the 11.20 circular home!!!! We progressed to shades from dobcroft youth club. Ahhh happy days. BobbyDazzler 06-01-2010, 23:30 In the lyrics, L7 is American slang for square. |
