View Full Version : Does anyone NOT like Hendersons relish?
Twitcher 12-01-2007, 21:51 The other night we were having our hash and dumplings and I thought how my daughter was missing out as she's 10 any refuses to try relish.
I suppose it looks pretty gross if you're not accomplished to the taste but I wondered in anyone in Sheffield on here dislikes it?
UnkleBob 12-01-2007, 22:22 can't imagine ANYONE from sheffield will openly admit to not liking it...
and if they do i'll give them a badge...a SAD badge...
neeeeeeeeeek 12-01-2007, 22:24 It's just dirty vinegar with some garlic in it.
:)
Jabberwocky 12-01-2007, 22:34 My other half hates the stuff.
Shes a bloody southerner though so its to be expected.
i can love it or hate it! my mate brought me some last time he came to visit and i have used most of it, i add it to soups & stews. I do not use it as a table sauce though just a cooking one.
upinwath 12-01-2007, 22:40 I love it but I know that Muslims, gnomes and cross dessers hate it.
I'm not sure about jabberwocky.
upholder 12-01-2007, 22:48 Sheffield born and bred and I can't stand the stuff, don't like the caramel content.
Great with meat and 'tattie pie or in a stew.
Tends to spoil the taste of oysters washed down with a good vintage champagne.
Improves the taste of any native Welsh dish (wool, mud, seaweed etc.).

I tend to prefer the taste of all things in a pure state so additions are an anathema to me.
martin1973 13-01-2007, 00:30 I used to eat relish butties as a kid just load my stews and gravy with it these days also nice with fish, only me that likes it in our house kids hate it just means more for me. Mr Henderson should have been knighted its the doggies bo*****s

A martyr to the cause of the Celtic fringes.
I don't like it, but then again i don't like any sauces, don't even have gravy!
melthebell 13-01-2007, 09:25 bloody weirdos
:D
I wouldn't say that I don't like it, but it is nothing special, and far inferior to Lea and Perrins. People have some attachment to it because it is local which seems reasonable to me as it is good to buy local.
Lollipop22 13-01-2007, 09:35 i love relish, i could eat it on anything, but you can't beat it on meat and tatty pie or hash

Word of advice KenH. If you see a wicker man being constructed in your garden, Run Man! Run!

Surely it's really just a matter of personal preference and taste? i much prefer Hendersons over Lea and Perrins, it could be i suppose what you are brought up with and used to.
Lea and Perrins is nice on cheese on toast though mmmm :D
coretext 13-01-2007, 10:36 When I'm at Shef Uni I often have to walk past the Hendersons Relish factory. You can really smell the relish, it's all good.
Lea and Perins is just plain wrong :hihi:
scentral 13-01-2007, 10:46 Used to take a case of Hendo's out to a mate in Spain who would drink it from the bottle!
Can't stand these Southern poofta chefs on TV referrring to Wur-ces-ter-shya sauce (L & Ps). Watered down version of Hendersons.
I think Hendersons are missing a major marketing opportunity here.
laughalot01 13-01-2007, 13:00 me an my cousin live in cornwall how ever love the stuff but born an bred in sheff we luv it on our pasties an cnt get enough we still tryin to con sum1 in2 bringin it down on reg basis :hihi:
KJ_VENOM 13-01-2007, 13:25 Born & bred in sheffield, can't stand the stuff :gag:
if food is cooked properly then additions like are not needed
Escafeldia 13-01-2007, 15:14 I don't dislike Hendersons but it does seem to lack much flavour. Overall I prefer Lee Perrins Worcestershire Sauce. It has more flavour and a bit more bite. Oh - and I was born and still live in Sheffield.
You can get Hendersons all over the place now so even Southerners can enjoy the delights of the stuff. :hihi: :hihi:
Greybeard 13-01-2007, 16:10 Born & bred in sheffield, can't stand the stuff :gag:

Agreed ! I can imagine my wife's reaction if I drowned her beeootiful meat and potato pie in that muck. :help:
People should learn how to make tasty gravy ;)
pauly1664 13-01-2007, 17:19 I don't like it, but then again i don't like any sauces, don't even have gravy!

bobsyouruncle 13-01-2007, 17:56 Sheffield born and bred, and I HATE the stuff.Along with Lea & Perrins, and Marmite. :gag: :gag:
Yes every one loves it...And if they dont .....they should be punished.
camping_gaz 13-01-2007, 18:21 sad sad sad f#ck#ng sad my son loves it and it stinks
Yellowrose 13-01-2007, 18:48 Born in Rovvrem but lived in Sheffield for almost 30 years. Im not keen. I could eat it if I had to but I like food without it. It upsets me when I spend ages making a corned beef pie for my partner and he smothers it in relish. All that time and effort with the pastry ...
Yellowrose 13-01-2007, 18:50 Just remembered. I used to work for the council and first time in the canteen for fish and chips, I reached for the vinegar bottle and this strange brown stuff came out. One ruined fish. They used to put it in the vinegar bottles on the tables, unlabelled. How was I to know?
sheff_hiker 13-01-2007, 19:34 LOVE IT:)
i even have it WITH SUGAR on my PANCAKES:)
Sheff Hiker
Had it on ready salted crisps other day. Yum
RiffRaff 13-01-2007, 20:53 Poor relation to L&P in my opinion....
That said, give me horseradish sauce or relish any day of the week...
pinkgirl 13-01-2007, 21:58 Had it on ready salted crisps other day. Yum
Yes love it on crisps, also on stew with pancake underneath
and on tomato soup with chips in:)
jaffacake 13-01-2007, 22:00 Lived in Sheffield all my life and i can't stand the stuff, even the smell puts me off my food.
LOVE IT:)

No! Really? That's just plain wrong  .
Liking Henderson's is built into the DNA of all Sheffielders. If you don't like it, then you're a mutant, literally :D .
Nigel Womersle 14-01-2007, 00:43 can't imagine ANYONE from sheffield will openly admit to not liking it...
and if they do i'll give them a badge...a SAD badge...
Give me a sad badge Bob. I cannot stand the stuff.
yorkiepudd 14-01-2007, 07:41 ANother SAD badge here please - the rest of the family love it but I can't even stand the smell of it on others food...... :(
Escafeldia 14-01-2007, 09:42 Born in Rovvrem but lived in Sheffield for almost 30 years. Im not keen. I could eat it if I had to but I like food without it. Start buyng ready made shortcrust pastry Yellowrose. It takes all the effort out of mixing flour, fat and water. Then probably you just love making it. It might be that your corned beef pie filling needs something to liven it up. Why not buy some stewing steak, some kidney and use a bit more seasoning then your OH wouldn't need to put relish or anything else on your culinary creations. :D :D :D
SpeedwayDan 14-01-2007, 12:37 love it in stews and some pies:)
Smithers 14-01-2007, 14:01 I love it but gives me shocking heartburn, need a rennies chaser.
all ways on the table when I was a kid my bro's tea was swiming in the stuff:love:
