Hi am looking for some help.....am using windows xp with recently installed service pack 2 and wanadoo broadband for past 2 weeks.....broadband was working intermittently (kept cutting off) over last week until my comp completely crashed needing me to have to reformat hard disk.
Have just reinstalled everything but computer does not seem to agree with broadband modem. If the modem is plugged in via the usb port the computer does not boot up even though the modem driver is installed properly. Have called the tech support but all they can advise is to ring microsoft for upgrade of usb chipset...what is this and should I need this if modem was already working last week.
Can anyone offer any advice? It would be much appreciated.
Cheers

I've heard of two other people with USB problems after XP SP2.
I had some intermittent problems that I put down to crap USB equipment. I sort of cured them by going to the hardware device manager and making sure that the power management settings on all USB ROOT HUBs were unticked.

hi,
I have a speedtouch modem that came with wanadoo disc so i have the wanadoo software working (though I'm actualy signed on to btbroadband - also get intermittent service - had to wait to be able to write this)
I have to unplug the modem every time i boot/reboot computer or for some reason the modem interferes and freezes the operation half way, plugging it in when windows has finished loading - hassle i know but my only answer as of yet other than buying another modem)
could try pulling out and try - stick it back in when done. hope this helps
Dont use SP2 for the minute!
I have this on good authority being a techie for a large bank.
Dont do it people - trust me on this.

Yes, maybe for a large bank with many thousands of machines to consider, and many security things built into the network.
But for auntie Mary down the road who WILL open that attachment, WILL install the 'Superspeed Surfbar' or whatever while using IE 5.5 - the benefits probably outweigh the risk of problems.
Barclays and Lloyds Bank...
and they both pay very well for our services as well thank god!
I've tried installing sp2 on my home pc and it is a right pile o' cack.
The firewall may as well not be on at all.. and as for the so called security.
Dont trust it.
Also it cocks up USB good style as I had the same problems with Wanadoo and my home network.

I work for Wanadoo - SP2 is a real killer - we're not actively supporting it - just refer them to their vendor or microsoft. Just wait for the patches for it arriving. Get a decent firewall and SP1 is ok.
Hi there, thanks for all the help and advice. My wanadoo is up and running finally. It's not been easy though. Have had constant arguments with the tech staff at wanadoo after I was promised a new modem on three occasions only to learn that the orders had been turned dwon because the idiot who had promised me the modem had not documented the fault that I had reported. Frankly I found the staff to be rather rude!! However, I finally received my replacement modem and touch wood everything seems to be working fine 1.1mbps at present.
Cheers again

Wanadoo Broadband Support off to India - RWYHIF
I downloaded sp2 before I got Wanadoo broadband. Everything seems fine but in the last few days when I boot up and it automatically connects I get a dialogue box saying there has ben a problem and do I want to report it. This however doesn't stop Wanadoo connecting or bring any problems. Any idea why this should be happening ?
