View Full Version : The (2D) Ultrasound Scans megathread
hbofinger 12-01-2007, 09:19 I've just found out I'm pregnant (YAY) but have just found out that in Sheffield the NHS doesn't routinely offer a 12 week scan. I've been told I won't get a scan until 20 weeks. I thought the 12 week scan was important for the nuchal fold test and I'm concerned because I've also heard that they are no longer routinely doing the triple-test...I'm not in a typically high-risk group, but I would still like to be certain!
All that aside, I really just would like to see my baby before 20 weeks!!
Has anyone had a private 12 week scan?? Where was it? How much? Can you provide any contact details?
Thanks so much
astronaut77 12-01-2007, 09:21 hi, a friend of mine recently paid for a 12 week scan - i think it was approx £150. Will try and find out some more info for you.
Congratulations by the way! :D
Brunette 12-01-2007, 09:26 I didn't get one either - I was told they were too busy, so I got one at 20 weeks.

Congratulations. Have you asked the midwife. I'm sure she'll be able to explain the ins and outs pof why they have stopped doing this scan.
Also, she'll be able to discuss the benefits of a twelve week scan should you choose to go ahead and pay for one.
Congratulations and completely understand that you're excited and impatient to see the baby!
Congratulations ................
I had a 12 week scan at jessops and the appointment came through before I had even had an appointment with the midwife.
I also then had bleeding at 8 weeks and had to go for a scan too.
Im now off on monday for my 20 week scan!
Which side of Sheffield are you? Ie which "team" do you belong to? Im on the concord team so I cant see why I could have one and you cant!
Hope everything goes well.
Amanda
Lucy-Lastic 12-01-2007, 09:51 Congratulations!
As far as I know the 12 week scan was just done for dating in Sheffield it was very quick and you didnt see much at all. The baby doesnt look much like a baby then. The 20 week scan is much more detailed and they can do more diagnostics. The blood tests for downs/ spina bifida were done around 15/16 weeks and only gave a risk factor. If, like me, your risk factor came back high you were offered an amnio which was very scarey:(
Nirvanaliz 12-01-2007, 10:34 Congrats!!!!!
I had my first scan when I was 11 weeks, I think you'll have to have one as they use it to help check the baby's size and confirm your due date.
I'm on the Norfolk team.
I've had 2 scans in total now, both routine. I think I was around 21 weeks when I had my 2nd scan.
Congratulations!

<----- Thats my 12 week scan - I think I could see alot of baby then!!! Cant wait for Monday for 20 weeks scan!
babychickens 12-01-2007, 10:46 i had a 12 week scan, and a 20 week scan, without having to ask for them. check with your midwife.
congratulations hbofinger, bet your very excited!
I was offered early scans as I was high risk, but I believe lisaH is right in saying they use it as a dating scan, if your not sure of the dates of your last period then they may offer you a scan, if not then they tend to leave it till 20 weeks.
Good luck!

Aaaw, this is making me all broody...........................again!

I got a letter from Jessops after midwife had done her bit saying to reing them to arrange scan date for 12wk scan?! I was under Norfolk and has my 12wk scan this time last year, bout 11th Jan.
Frenchie 12-01-2007, 10:55 I had my 20 week scan at Claremont hospital as it wasn't a routine scan when I had my daughter and I wanted the reasureance. I am sure they, along with Thornbury Hospital will also do the 12 week scan. If you are in Westfield you may also be able to claim some of the cost of it back. I got 75% back so in the end it only cost me just under £50 and it was worth every penny. Good luck, I hope you have a trouble free pregnancy.
Hi congratulations!!
I am also having my scan at 12 weeks. Though I did have to have an early scan at 7 weeks due to some chronic abdom pain, so dont know if that made a difference. I know in lots of places you have to wait past 12 weeks now. Good luck. Hope they manage to schedule one in for you. Try if you can to get on with things as normal (with care of course) so the time passes quicker. I was almost counting the hours at first and it drove me insane!! Now I am busier doing other stuff time is passing much quicker xx
I thought the 12 week scan was important for the nuchal fold test and I'm concerned because I've also heard that they are no longer routinely doing the triple-test...I'm not in a typically high-risk group, but I would still like to be certain!
NHS provision for nuchal fold tests is very sketchy, not many people offered t, I'm assuming it's another postcode lottery. If you want one you may find you have to go private.
I'm 24 weeks and have had routine scans at 12 weeks for dating and 20 weeks to check bubs. I also had a scan at 7 weeks as I had a bleed.
I paid for a nuchal fold including blood tests which cost £200ish. I went to Claremount (sp?) Hospital. I think I had my blood test at 11 weeks and scan at 13 weeks.
I was told by the midwife to not have the triple test because the nuchal is better but I was offered it. Do remember that even with the nuchal it's still just a risk factor you can't be certain. My baby's risk of downs and edwards is as low as it can be at 1 in 50,000 but my baby could still be that 1.
I know some parts of the country don't offer 12 week scans but I don't think Sheffield is one of them.
A friend of mine wasn't offered it either and her midwife told her that they don't do them anymore. She saw a different midwife a few weeks later who booked her in there and then. I think it might depend on the midwofe - you can ask to have one and I don't think they can refuse.
Worst case scenerio - phone Jessops, tell them you haven't had one and they'll make the appointment.
i had a 12 week and 20 weeks scan! My 12 week appointment came through a few days after i had been to the docs to tell them i was pregnant, i was only 6 weeks at the time so the follwing 6 weeks dragged waiting to see my baby!
When i came to Glasgow i had anther scan as i had bleeding this was done at 33 weeks and it was amazing to see this fully formed baby. The midwife told me that they did not offer 20 week scans as routine and also said that it depends on the local health authourity what dates you got them on.
just call up jessops and say you not recieved an appointment and they will probably just book you in:thumbsup:
cosywolf 12-01-2007, 23:14 There is no nuchal scanning on NHS in Sheffield. I'm afraid I can't remember which scans were normal and which were abnormal, as I had some scary moments early on...sorry I can't help. I know I got one at around 12 weeks, but it's anyone's guess if it was routine or not. But I really feel for you - all you want to do is get a look at that little critter, and they just don't let you see it enough!!!
I know it can't cost as much as £150 for a normal 2D scan, and if it does, screw it and go for a 4D because they cost about the same, but you get to see your baby 3 dimensionally and get a dvd and a much longer, nicer appointment - not that I had one, but I certainly covetted one! Plus I think they can see if thewre are any problems, etc more easily.
My son was born in 2003 and i had 2 scans as well.
I'd kick up a fuss and say you want one
CONGRATULATIONS btw!
No 12 week scan? since when? I had a scan at 11 weeks and 1 at 21 weeks without having to ask. Thought that was just routine. Unless things have changed in the last 2 years you should get your early 'dating' scan anywhere from 9 to 13 weeks I was told by my midwife.
My friend had her baby just this week and she had a 12 week and 20 week scan. Double check with you're midwife or ring Jessops and ask them about it. Good luck through you're pregnancy
tinkabel 14-01-2007, 13:43 Congratulations!

When i had my 12 week scan, my son looked better on that than he did on the 20 week one lol! On my 12 week he has MASSIVE lips and was then given the nickname Nemo which has stuck, poor kid lol!!

4D scans are amazing and i would definately recommend, i had one when i was 30 weeks, the experience i cannot even try to describe, well worth the money. I had mine in 2004 and the cheapest place was in Leeds to get it done, can't remember what it was called though.
Hi, I was/am also concerned about this, as I think I am 15 weeks, am going to Jessops for the first time on wednesday. for everything i think, lasting 1.5 hours. I was concerned that not had adating scan. everyone was worrying me, that I should have 1 at 12 weeks.
but I will go along on wednesday
and if anyone can tell what happens then, I will be appreciated.
hope everyone else is going alright.
x
Nirvanaliz 15-01-2007, 14:38 beth29 - When you go to Jessops on Wednesday you should have your 1st scan, some blood tests and they'll probably check your height and weight.
I went back to Jessops for my 2nd scan when I was around 21 weeks, it was an anomaly scan and lasted about 30 minutes as they basically check how well the baby is developing and that all the organs are fine. Everything was great so I'm now seeing the midwife on a monthly basis (this will get more frequent soon) and I will start antenatal classes at the end of January. I might get a visit of the labour ward at Jessops but that will probably be the only time I go there again before the big day.
My baby is due in 10 days time, I had an early scan at 6 weeks, due to previous ectopic, but had the routine 12 and 20 week scans aswell, I really don;t think that they have done away with the 12 week scan.

Hi, I was expecting to be having tests for downs syndrome, things like that. or do they not do that til later.
??
meumeu77 15-01-2007, 21:05 Beth29, you can opt to have these tests done around week 15.
Good luck!
Mrsb73, I'm due in 13 days. We'll see who of you or me gives birth first, I'll race you! ;o)
Nirvanaliz 16-01-2007, 10:42 Hi, I was expecting to be having tests for downs syndrome, things like that. or do they not do that til later.
??
You get to decide what blood tests you are happy to have. I chose to have them all. You'll only have a proper test for downs syndrome if your blood test results show there is a high possibility of the baby having downs.
I'm 24 weeks pregnant and had a scan at 16 weeks and one 20 and 23. I also had triple tests all on NHS.

Fantastic, congratulations! I'm due on 9th March but we've decided to keep it as a surprise as to whether it's a boy or girl. I'm busting to know though.
littleboo 18-01-2007, 08:32 Congratulations to all the pregnant ladies on this thread!
I have recently had a baby girl (9 1/2 weeks old) I had all the scans too, I did have early bleeding though, but my friend had a 12 week scan and there was no problems with her pregnancy.
Hi everyone, went for my first scan yesterday at Jessops, i am 13 weeks 1 day.
I had mixed feelings about the place/staff. mainly confusing.
scan went good, got weighed, had blood. saw midwife, didnt know it was mw. not friendly what so ever. no one asked me how I was, if I had any problems. no friendliness. blood woman was nice.
overall, there for 2 hours. and in total saw everyone for total of 12 minutes. glad i wont be going back there in a hurry.
me & hubby not impressed my the midwife.
he wanted to complain, we had to ask her at the v. end if she knew results from urine sample, she just said normal. and how we get blood results.
Lucy-Lastic 18-01-2007, 11:21 The blood results will get sent to your community midwife - she will explain them and everything (I think they take about 10 days or so and she will only see you earlier than your next booked appointment if the bloods show anything up to be concerned about). Jessops antenatal is a lot of waiting about from my 2 experiences there - they are really busy so dont have much time unfortunately. Hopefully you wont need to see them again as you will get loads more from your community midwife.

Beth29, you're not alone. I found the first visit extremely unfriendly - and actually extremely unpleasant...HORROR STORY WARNING>
I had bled twice early on and gone for very early scans to ensure baby was well. At my booking-in visit, when I finally got to see the midwife, she asked how far along I was, etc and I explained that I'd had bleeding, so the dates were quite good due to scans, and she said in a horrible, brusque way..."Best get you scanned again now before we go any further. Don't want to waste my time if there's no point, and there may well not be." Cue me, sobbing and terrified and shocked, being led through all those pregnant women by my equally shocked and terrified husband for yet another scan before she would book me in. Thankfully, the woman doing the scan was a fabulous, wonderful, patient and heavenly person who assured me that everything was fine and gave me time to calm down. It still makes me furious and it still makes me cry to think about it after all this time. If I was to see and recognise that woman again, I would probably do myself a great disservice...
HOWEVER: GOOD STUFF: it got better and friendlier with subsequent visits (never saw that evil old bat again) and I didn't mind going at all later on. Apart from the waits...
NEVER BE AFRAID TO STAND UP FOR YOURSELF AND SAY IF SOMETHING IS WORRYING OR UPSETTING YOU. I know that suddenly becomes easier said than done when it comes to pregnancy and hospitals etc (I am usually a mouthy, opinionated moo myself but turned anxious and quiet at first), but you have a right to be treated with respect and decency and to be kept informed.
Nirvanaliz 19-01-2007, 08:19 During my 2nd scan at around 21 weeks I first saw a lovely midwife who let me watch the monitor and talked me through what she was doing. As the baby had curled into a ball and she couldn't check the organs properly, I had to go to the canteen for 10 minutes to see if it would uncurl so she could continue the scan.
I returned to find I had a new midwife who was a real misery. She kept the monitor facing towards her so I couldn't see anything, she didn't say a word to me and then started jabbing my stomach really hard with the scanning device (sorry don't know what it's called) to try to get the baby to uncurl - which I didn't like her doing at all.
At the end of the day, I guess they're very overworked and under resourced so I didn't say anything to her but was disappointed as it's my first baby and me and my hubby were obviously excited about the scans.
However, I can't complain as Cosywolf's experience sounds horrendous - I'd have been totally devasetated had a midwife said anything like that to me. There's really no excuse for that sort of heartless behaviour towards an expectant mum.
commuter 25-01-2007, 14:31 I'm on the Norfolk team.
does that mean you work there?
xxlauraxx 31-07-2007, 19:29 hi i am 19 weeks pregnant and i have just been for my ultrasound scan today at rotherham hospital everythings fine and baby had legs crossed so they couldnt tell us sex we dont really mind waiting to find out the sex of our baby as we really dont have the money to pay to go private but mine and my husband family said they wouldnt mind putting money together to find out

Swan_Vesta 31-07-2007, 19:43 Liose on the forum had this done, you could try asking her, I think she bought it off e-bay and had to go nottingham to have it done.
You can buy a baby scan off of ebay :o?
Jesus, I led a sheltered life.

jonny127 31-07-2007, 20:18 I think you can get it done at Claremont Hospital Sheffield-
xxlauraxx 31-07-2007, 20:19 jonny127 yes i phoned them up today but it was after 5 so they said phone back in the morning do you no how much it cost just for a normal 2d one thankyou laura
try the thornbury, near crosspool
xxlauraxx 31-07-2007, 20:33 dank do you no where abouts it is and how much it would be just for a normal 2d scan just to find out sex? thankyou laura
jonny127 31-07-2007, 20:37 not sure we had our son 20 months ago and went to Claremont for a scan called something like "nuecal" to measure a space in the back of the neck... but I am sure they do other scans...
We actually found out the sex of our son at Jessops during a routine scan...
Congratulations- it is fantastic being a Dad and I guess mums love it too!!
Mommatron 31-07-2007, 20:41 Why not just wait? What if legs still crossed - would you go again? Thornbury is on Fulwood Road I think.
xxlauraxx 31-07-2007, 20:53 hi me and my husband dont mind waiting it was both our parents that said they would pay for us to have another scan i was going to phone up and ask as we only are wanting a scan to find out the sex as we no baby is fine as i had a scan today
We had a 3d one done in Nottingham and it was £40. Here's the website - Window to the Womb (http://www.windowtothewomb.co.uk).
We kept the sex of our baby a surprise, even though we had the 3d scans done - we asked them to keep it a surprise. I'm glad we did, as I liked finding out after she was born. But I know some people prefer to know so that they can get ready for the birth. Make sure you don't get pressured into finding out if you would prefer to wait.
Mommatron 31-07-2007, 21:00 If you two don't want to know then make them wait. I understand that some people want to know but it is so exciting rummaging about to see what you have got. I have got one of each and both surprised me - not sure why as there are only two sorts to choose from. It will also whip your parents into a frenzy of excitement when its born. Good luck x:)
louise2395 01-08-2007, 07:46 You can definitely have one done at Thornbury in Sheffield but I know it's over £100.
Good luck!
Louise x
Skippy06 01-08-2007, 08:16 Hi
Baby view in Barnsley we had one and it was fab. We only went for the 4d scan but they will tell you the sex if you want it is up to you if you don't want to know just tell them before hand.
www.babyview.co.uk
Cost about £50 for a normal 2d scan or from £99 for a 4d - I would recommend the 4d as you will get to see what you lo will look like.
hi me and my husband dont mind waiting it was both our parents that said they would pay for us to have another scan i was going to phone up and ask as we only are wanting a scan to find out the sex as we no baby is fine as i had a scan today
Sorry, I must be missing something MASSIVE here. Why on earth would your parents tell you they want to pay for you to specifically find out the sex of your baby and you don't mind waiting, and you are trying to find out where you can have one? The same scan that you have just had too......very strange if I say so myself.
banesmabes 01-08-2007, 12:50 My sister paid to have an extra one done privately at the Jessop wing - they'd had some private fertility treatment there too. Maybe worth enquiring with your GP/Midwife?

Yes i had 4d scan done here, they were really good, and my little one who now 2.5, thinks the dvd pictures ect are FAB, she sits there cooing at the cute little baby on the telly, she still dosent get that it her, lol :hihi:
it cost alot more than £99, but like i said it was a couple of years ago.
charlie9865 01-08-2007, 16:29 Im finding out the sex of this baby september the 5th. I would love another boy becaus i got 2 and their fantastic. But have a strong feeling this one is a girl.
But when we go for the scan if we have trouble finding sex out because legs are crossed ect. Then i will be using one of these places and paying. As im desperaate to find out. I have no patients and hate surprises. When i had my first son they was not telling the sex and i hated it. I want to know so i can go buy all the blue or pink bits. charlie x
honeyb35 04-08-2007, 21:53 I never find out the sex as I love the surprise at the end, but with number 3 I did pay for a 4d scan, although I asked them not to tell me the sex. I used the babyview one in barnsley and it was fab, it cost £99 and I got a cd, photos and a dvd. They do 2d scans as well for about £50. I loved it cos my daughter was fascinated by it all as she could never understand the ordinary scan photos. It was amazing as well cos all through the scan baby was snuggling her face into the placenta and even now she likes a blanket near her face to snuggle
Katie1980 07-11-2007, 18:05 I had my 12 week scan on Monday, and turned out to actually be 12 and 3 days. However during the scan the sonographer did look at the heartbeat and but just said "theres the heartbeating" she didnt count how fast it was or anything. She also just said everything else seemed ok, but didnt seem massively concerned. Is this normal, would they normally monitor the heart rate, or is it usual just to see it flickering away.
Think im just paranoid.
Ginger_Kitty 07-11-2007, 18:10 At my scan (which turned out to be just over 10 weeks!) it was just looked at :)
To be honest even at the 20 weeks scan it wasn't counted, and has never been in any of my MW appts so far, as far as i know :)
We just listen to it for a bit, it sounds fine and regular and thats all we're worried about. I'm sure the MW would say something if it was too fast or too slow by her reckoning....
gina2007 07-11-2007, 18:24 At my 12 weeks scan which turned out to be 10 weeks and 3 days, they just said theres the heartbeat, do you want a picture, then they measured it head to rump and gave me a final due date. They didn't measure the heartbeat at all, nor did they at my 20 weeks. They did however the other day when I went into hospital cause baby was moving around. I wouldn't get too worried and ask your MW or health professional at the next available appt, if its normal. :)
muckynees 08-11-2007, 08:52 I was really disappointed when I had my 12 week scan also, I had an emergency scan the week before and the sonographer really looked at the baby, heartbeat (i could see it perfectly), size etc. She pressed on really hard on my tummy and got a great look.
When I went back the week after for my dating scan the sonographer had the quickest look, she didnt press on nearly as hard and the picture was really difficult to see. I couldn't even see the heartbeat (neither could OH), she said "theres the heartbeat, wipe the jelly from your tummy, how many pictures do you want?" and that was that.
I totally understand that they have to get through hundreds of women each week and the job probably gets mundane but they need to realise that women are really nervous at these scans etc and just need a bit of reassurance ie " ooh the heatbeat is ????, thats fine"
I've had 3 children and it all sound very familiar, however the scan machine actually records the rate of the heart. Likewise when you have your midwife appointments during the pregnancy, the midwife is checking the same thing in as much as the heart beat is roughly twice the speed of mums. If it was any different they would refer you for further investigation
charlie9865 08-11-2007, 16:51 I dont think iv had any of my babys heart rates noted in my book or anything. And they saw the heart beat at scan don't think they over checked it,just showed it me. although they did check at my emergency 8 week scan.
Hi all,
I'm currently 22+3 weeks preg. I had a scan last week to check for abnormality but the wee one is laying face down and refused to budge. They couldn't get his/her heart (which they are keen to get as my oh has a hist of heart murmurs) well the first sonographer we saw was a heart specialist and he spent 40 mins with me pretty much upside down, back to front, with a full bladder and with an empty bladder! He was fab too.
He sent us for a 30 min walk and someone else tried but couldn't see his/her face, heart (rate or chambers) or the diaphram so a re-scan was booked. I asked what would happen if they couldn't see anything this time and she said rather harshly "well we wont keep scanning you" like I was caring about that lol
Needless to say the little monkey wasn't playing ball today and whilst the nice lady saw the heart, it was really shady and she couldn't measure it. Nor could she see his/her face and bubs was in the same position as every other time so she booked me another re-scan for next friday.
My question is - How many times will they book re-scans before they give up and just wait and see if his/her heart is ok and the face is all true and correct?
I'm not worried about it to be honest but would just like to prepare myself for it.
Thanks all xx
gina2007 24-11-2007, 15:51 I was told if they couldn't check everything on the scan they'd get me back in at 22 weeks, 24 weeks, 26 weeks then give up. So I think it's about 2/3 times. But bubs was in a good position ect so i've not had to go back. :) x
bunnykins 24-11-2007, 15:54 i was sent to leeds for a coloured 3d scan with my little one,if your worried id insist on a better scan.
I'm not worried really. I don't think a coloured scan would make much of a difference because the little monkey is laid straight across face down so you wouldn't see anything in another scan anyway.
I just don't want to have to go back every week from now on if it's not going to help any.
Thanks for the advise though xxx
Raychul69 27-11-2007, 12:27 Has anyone ever had a scan at Thornbury? I'm going this evening to check everything is ok and also to find out whether I'm having a girl or a boy, I'm far too impatient to wait :D
Just wanted to know what to expect, will it just be like going for a scan at Jessops?
Cheers ladies.
monstermummy 27-11-2007, 12:44 We went for the nuchal fold scan and it was good, scan was much clearer than at Jessop's. All the staff were very friendly and we could buy three different pics, but cannot remember how much they were.
Also, the gel was warmed up :)
The doctor who did the scan was very nice and let us look at monsterbaby for quite a while, but I suppose that might have been just luck.

Raychul69 27-11-2007, 14:17 I will do. ooooohhhh I can't wait :D
Katie1980 27-11-2007, 15:57 How much is it, do you just ring up and go or does your midwife have to refer you?
Sarah1982 27-11-2007, 18:04 You dont have to be reffered to go - they do Private maternity care, 4d ultrasound and early ultrasound.
Raychul69 27-11-2007, 18:15 How much is it, do you just ring up and go or does your midwife have to refer you?
Hey Katie,
I rang up this morning and got in for tonight. It was £50 for the scan and the scanner man gave me 6 pics as well :)
Katie1980 27-11-2007, 18:30 Did you successfully find out the sex?
littlewizzle 29-11-2007, 17:51 this happened to us the other week and we got told to go for a walk so went for a coffee but still hadn't moved when we got back. But still manage to get measurements ,the lady that scanned us said, that day the baby's she had seen didn't want to move about lol.hope you have more joy next scan you have
*Peaches* 14-12-2007, 08:24 I have been looking at my scan and have convinced myself I can see 2 not one. I'm going in for another later this aft
cosywolf 14-12-2007, 12:06 Two? Oh, make sure you tell us how that turns out! Surely the sonographer would have noticed, though?
:wow: OMG :hihi: Lemme know peaches ;)
Hope all goes well :D
babychickens 14-12-2007, 12:46 the scan in your avatar looks pretty much like one to me ;). I'd believe whatever the sonographer tells you - seriously, the amount of training and time it takes to get a full appreciation for ultrasound images means that most (all?) sonographers know what they're saying when they say it! Let us know what they say this time...
*Peaches* 15-12-2007, 08:12 I was concerend because in another pic it looks like one head up and one head down. They refused to rescan me but insisted only one is there so I guess we'll not know until 21 week scan on 5th feb
as the title says ive got another scan tomorrow.....
had my 20 week scan on new years eve but because of the position the baby was laid they told me they couldnt check everything they wanted to so i'm booked in for tomorrow!!!
gina2007 10-01-2008, 19:35 Ooh, have you found out the sex already or are you going to?
was going to find out what we were having at the last scan but cause of the baby being laid on its back they couldnt tell!!
so, not sure if we are going to find out tomorrow or not!!
gina2007 10-01-2008, 22:18 Ooh, are you wanting to find out? Is it your first baby?
its my second baby, already got a little boy!!
i want to find out then i change my mind!!!
gina2007 10-01-2008, 22:32 Ooh. Bless! I wish I had another scan! :( Then again..i'll be meeting him in around a week. If hes on time!!
This happened to us. We ended up with four scans one every week and the sonographer was just about to book me in for another one the following week when the baby flipped round. The had saw everything else except her face and her heart but they saw everything then and she was laid with her legs spread eagled lol.
I had started to get worried but seemingly it's a lot more common than people think. I'm now 29 weeks and she's just as difficult in there now as she was back at scan time!
I hope you get it all sorted next time xxx
Raychul69 11-01-2008, 13:38 OOohhh have you found out what your having then hun? Hope the scan has gone well :)
hey ladies, well had scan, there was one part of the heart they couldnt see cause of how baby was laying but everything else is fine!!
asked if they could tell us what we were having and baby had its legs closed so wecouldnt find out, lol
im thinking now that we arent meant to know what we are having
:)
muckynees 11-01-2008, 16:10 thats great news sali, yep i would take it as a sign that you are meant to be kept guessing at the sex of babba too, more importantly everything was ok with babba. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy :)
gina2007 11-01-2008, 16:27 Aww! Good luck with everything! x
Raychul69 11-01-2008, 18:14 Glad everything is fine Sali :)
thank you ladies!!!!
how good are scans though
:):)
cosywolf 11-01-2008, 21:46 I'm glad the scan went well for you, Sali. I'd be going bonkers with curiosity about the sex myself, though, lol.
it took use a good few weeks to decide if we wanted to find out and when we had made our minds up we couldnt cause baby's legs were closed! lol
guess we just arent meant to know
Birth-Peace 21-01-2008, 11:54 So yes, anomaly scan tomorrow and I'm terrified.
We've been through so much with miscarriages, I can't quite get my head round the fact that this pregnancy is doing so well.
I'm terrified of something bad being found tomorrow?
Can you tell me what I might expect from the day and stuff?
I just want baby to be ok.
sTaGeWaLkEr 21-01-2008, 11:59 You're gonna be just fine - I'm sending you positive vibes!
:)
Let me know how it goes.
x
Ginger_Kitty 21-01-2008, 12:05 You'll be fine hun, honestly, its normal to be scared, and even more normal in your case :)
This scan takes a bit longer than the last one, there's more to scan to start with!! :)
Ask the sonographer to tell you what she's looking at and why and for some reason that makes it a lot less scary - hearing 'just checking the heart and there's four nice chambers working fine' is great :)
Good luck and enjoy it ;)
Em :)
sophiec1979 21-01-2008, 12:11 online hugs coming your way and telepathic snuggles being sent too.
if youre really unlucky, i might pop over tonight and come and give you a proper hug! :help:;)
em's advice sounds really good- if you know whats going on that always makes the unknown a bit less scary. :)
x
Hey you,
It's really an exciting thing getting this scan, everything is so much clearer and the baby is so big! You've got this far sweetie and everythings going well even though you've been feeling like poo.
The scan takes ages so don't let that worry you they just have to check everything over. I paniced cause I had to be re-scanned as they couldnt see the baby's heart or face. They were keen to see the heart on my baby due to heart murmers in my oh's family.
It turned out we needed to be re-scanned another 3 times due to her being laid funny and although I was worried they were great and I got extra scans to see my baby growing week by week!
let us know how you go sweetie xxx
You will be fine and so will baby. The worst thing you can do is get all stressed out.(easier said than done I know)
Its even more stressful when you have suffered previous miscarriages(I suffered 3 miscarriages and went on to have 3 healthy babies)
Good luck!!
Best of luck, petal.
I'm sure you and baby bump will be fine.
Raychul69 21-01-2008, 14:00 Hey Lapis, try not to get too worked up about this I know it's so easy to say but try and look forward to it. It's not like your 12 week scan, you get to spend time looking at your new baby as the sonographer measures all his features and checks everything :)
Big hug for you hun (((((((((()))))))))))))
Birth-Peace 21-01-2008, 14:11 Thank you everybody. It comes and goes in waves, one minute I'm so excited but then the next ...
I am really looking forward to seeing my baby, so is Rich951 x
*Peaches* 21-01-2008, 14:48 I'm sure you'll be fine Lapis, I'm going for mine soon too!
Hey Lapis, will you post a pic of the little blue?
cosywolf 21-01-2008, 20:30 Yes, post a pic! And best of luck tomorrow. You'll be fine xx
gina2007 21-01-2008, 21:11 Rach hunni, you'll be fine. Watch the scan closely (And try not to laugh at the excitement as I did, and the sonographer got kind of mad with me :hihi:) if you watch it all you'll remember it, I can't remember mine hardly because I was laughing so hard, I didn't know wether to cry, laugh or just lay and watch. So I laughed. Craig found it funny that I was crying with laughter. Until he said "It's a boy" As I was convinced it was a girlie! Richard (Please tell me that is your OH's name..!) will be watching closely too, if he is going with you. It's a lovely experience as the room is really dark and it goes on for what seems like a lifetime. You get to see all little bits and bobs, and your babys tackle (If he has a tackle! Otherwise you'll see a burger :P)
Enjoy it and you'll be fine :)
xxxx
Otherwise you'll see a burger :P)
lol that really made me laugh.
Have you been yet Lapis? I hope it went well. Did you find out what your having, do we have a tackle or burger as Gina said?
Was it as amazing as you thought it would be?

Oh Congratulations LL - a little girl!!!! Fantastic news - Hoping you are feeling better in your pregnancy now, I know you've had a tough time of it. And a May baby! Usually have lovely personalities! My eldest was due on 22nd May but came on the 31st (1996) and he's got a great personality (easy going, funny and very popular!) Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy and roll on May!
FF XXXXX
My wife and I found out at Christmas that we are expecting our first child. We booked an appointment to see our GP asap and went on 4 January (8 weeks pregnant). The doctor spent about 5 minutes with us and said that the midwife will call us to arrange a home visit.
The midwife called around a fortnight later (a longer period than we expected) and we saw her on 22 January (10.5 weeks pregnant).
We've now had a letter through from the NHS to confirm that our first appointment at the hospital for a scan will be on 28 February (16 weeks pregnant!). From all the literature I've been reading, and our antenatal maternity record I understand that this scan should be in between 11 and 13 weeks. Has anyone experienced this problem? We're considering going private if we can not get Jessops to bring the scan forward.
*Peaches* 03-02-2008, 21:06 It does seem a little late, but the hospitals are very busy this time of year
monstermummy 03-02-2008, 21:10 If you want a nuchal fold scan (which the NHS in Sheffield is not offering anyway) you will have to go soon. I think the cut off date for this is 13 weeks.
16 weeks seems rather late, but then in other parts of the country they only have one scan which is at 20 weeks, so I suppose we can count ourselves lucky (although I do realise that this is no consolation in your situation and I would have been gutted, too).
i wouldnt worry about it, its just a dating scan anyway. Up here the hospital i was referred to initially is 12-14 weeks. The one i want has the scan at 16 weeks :)
cosywolf 03-02-2008, 21:10 There does appear to have been rather a baby boom this last couple of months. It may be that they are simply dealing with too many people. Worth querying it, though - it's always worth querying everything you don't get about this whole pregnancy business. Never sit wondering - ask, ask and ask again.
That's my best advice for you and all the preggers people on here.
Oh, and Welcome!
Agree with everyone above. A lot of people refer to it as the '12 week scan' and the '20 week scan' but all areas differ and it probably is quite busy at the moment.
Because of my age, I went private for a nuchal scan at the Claremont and I think that was at 11 weeks. Got to say the scanner at the Claremont gave much clearer pictures than Jessops.
I suppose you could call Jessops and see if they've got any cancellations?
But really, don't worry (easier said than done I know) most of the stuff you read are ideals and general guidelines. You'll find a lot of what happens in practice is very different.
Bexstars 04-02-2008, 11:38 Im expecting my second baby, im around 12 weeks now and my scan isnt until im 14-15 weeks. I know that private scans can be a bit expensive but sometimes worth it to put your mind at rest. As long as your wife isnt having any problems such as pains or bleeding in which case they should send her to the early pregnancy unit at the hallamshire for an early scan, everything should be fine and the scan will come around quickly
Thanks very much for the rapid response from everyone. To be honest after 4 years of living in Sheffield, this is the first time I've got onto the forum. I shall be doing so much more often now that I know how many bright and experienced people there are to give us newbies some advice! :)
I called Jessops this morning and they are fully booked until the end of February with no cancellations. We therefore decided to get a scan done privately at Thornbury Hospital this Thursday. It is £100, but i think its probably worth it. My wife is feeling pretty fed up after 6-7 weeks of feeling ill and tired without seeing any 'results' (same weight and no bigger belly), so hopefully a scan might give her a bit of a lift.
cuteykat 04-02-2008, 12:56 im 10 weeks now and i dont get to see my midwife till the 26th of feb as they keep cancelling my 1st appointment with her i wonder if ill ever get to dsee midwife at this point :hihi:

N Probs
same here i had my first scan at 16 week 2
I cannot remember from last time if it was the 12 week or the 20 week scan that you need a full bladder for. I have my 20 week scan on Tuesday and trying to work out if I need to drink gallons of water, anyone know?????????
Thankyou.
God no, thankfully not!
I can't imagine the dreadful waiting times on a full bladder and a half baked baby too, what a nightmare, there would be puddles everywhere!
The contrast I think is the issue at the earlier scans, though I could be wrong but certainly the 20 week scan is easiest on an empty bladder for you, the docs don't care so long as you don't wee on the bed :D
Birth-Peace 10-02-2008, 18:34 I was told that I had to have a full bladder for my 20 week scan. Although I emptied it and refilled it twice lol
Really? What a nightmare.
I remember asking and feeling very 'relieved' when they said no.
I'm absolutely certain it's possible without, I had vast amounts of scans due to the twingles (as I'm sure you have by now LL) and I was never inclined to go in on a full bladder cos my scans took forever.
You don't need a full bladders as the baby has moved up enough by this stage to be seen without needing a prop up from your full bladder.
You do need a full bladder for your 12 week scan. Also if they can't get a good view of the baby the sometimes send you for a walk for 30 mins or so and some water to see if it helps.
Thanks for that. Last time I went for the 20 week scan with my daughter they sent me for a walk 3 times as she was in the wrong position - the only time she moved was when the lady doing the scan tickled her feet!
lol
I'm 33 weeks pregnant and we had to go back 3 weeks in a row as our little monkey was laid funny. They were just going to book me to come again the next week and she flipped round and we saw her. I was starting to worry they weren't telling me something but it was just that they couldn't see what they wanted!
cuteykat 08-03-2008, 09:12 hi i had my 1st appointment with the midwife at the end of feb and she said id get my scan appointment threw the post iv been waiting 2 weeks now and still nothing.

littlewizzle 08-03-2008, 09:28 thank you is that the ante-natal number i ring on bk of book or do u have it please
yeh these numbers should be on back of your book ,give them a ring ,dont wait for your mf to do this as you could be waiting longer :)

its usually about 4-5 weeks once you have been referred, thats what it was with me when i was in Sheff, this time round i am in Glasgow and it was 5 weeks from referral to appointment.
cuteykat 08-03-2008, 15:25 my friend got hers within 5 days i just fort it was funny cos im still waiting
Don't rely on your midwife, some are great and some are just pants. Definitely just ring and make your own appointment :)
Jessops do seem to be very busy. It also took five weeks from referral to appointment for us. We tried to keep phoning for a cancellation spot, but to no avail. In the end we went for a private scan (£100) just for piece of mind, and we were also desperate for a look at the baby! The consultant at the private clinic also works at Jessops on the day shift, and so I asked him why waiting times are so long. He said it is because the Jessop Wing is designed to deliver 5,000 babies per year, but current is well over that figure at around 7,500 babies per year!
the Jessop Wing is designed to deliver 5,000 babies per year, but current is well over that figure at around 7,500 babies per year!
It's not been open that long, has it? Sounds like a major planning error.
cuteykat 11-03-2008, 07:21 Don't rely on your midwife, some are great and some are just pants. Definitely just ring and make your own appointment :)
Hi thanks i rang up and iv got to wait till they done it and post it out neva mind
cuteykat 14-03-2008, 10:46 hi just got my appointment ill b nearly 17 weeks when i go for it its in 2 weeks time
cosywolf 14-03-2008, 11:54 My scan date was exactly eight weeks from the first appointment with my GP...it clearly takes a while.
I think it helps to get to your GP early, as they can refer you then and there, while you may have to wait a while to see a midwife, which puts everything back a bit. You also need to ask your GP if he/she can refer you, rather than waiting until you see a midwife.
This doesn't help you, I'm afraid, but it's something for others to consider - or for next time!
I had my scan yesterday, and asked them about numbers. They confirmed that they are packed and that there does seem to have been an explosion in the number of pregnancies over the last couple of months.
Be warned, too...the appointment was for 1.35 and was supposed to take 1.5 hours. It took 3. At least the scan happened first this time - hoorah!
KJ_VENOM 14-03-2008, 12:03 With the state of the NHS your little one will be celebrating his/her 1st birthday when you get the appoinment.
I cant believe in this day and age the waiting time for a baby is 9 months in the NHS :D
chickywiggle 14-03-2008, 20:08 I was really impressed. Saw my Midwife on Wednesday... got a call from my dr's surgery today who booked my appt at Jessops over the fone with me. Their first availavble slot at the moment is 24th April so Yeah I would agree they are pretty overbooked - I don't wanna wait that long!!!!
alankeoy 25-03-2008, 16:20 Does anyone know a cheap private scan in Sheffield Area ? My wife went to first appoint today but unfortunately was not offer a scan because she had a scan in her 4th weeks due to bleeding. i was a bit disappointed but they still insist not to have the scan. is it normal ?
thanks
bobgirlsnake 25-03-2008, 16:53 ive never known them do that before, when i was pregnant with my son (now 1) i had a scan at about 6weeks one at 14weeks my 20weeks scan then a few more (because of problems) maybe have a word with your midwife see if she can book you one

i think it £50 to find out the sex
Raychul69 25-03-2008, 17:44 I had a private scan done at Claremont to find out the sex and it was about £50 I think with loads of pics
They're really good and do late and weekend appointments as well :)
lawson1082 25-03-2008, 18:47 i had a 3d scan done in barnsley somewhere cost about £130 but worth every penny it was amazing
Flutterbyes 25-03-2008, 21:31 i am not sure why they wont scan her, i had a scan at 6 weeks due to bleeding but they couldnt tell me dates from it, so had the 'routine' scan at 11, then 20 (couldnt see everything on it) then another at 24. i would deffo speak to your/oh midwife

Hi, did you get anything with it? I just phoned up and they still do the sexing scan for £50, but they said its just the scan, you dont get a dvd (whitch i dont mind) But you dont get a pic ether...
So i was just wondering weather you got anything....
Katie1980 27-03-2008, 19:51 You get pics, 5 I think. We got one of his bits, 2 profile ones, and 2 d pics for £50 at reassu3d.

Are they the black and white ones? Im getting confused in what 3D and 4D are. I have a dating scan at jessops next friday, are the scans you get at reassu3d the same as them or are they the ones were you see everything like this..

Katie1980 28-03-2008, 15:54 Basically 4d is in motion, so would be a dvd with baby moving etc, 3d is the same but a still picture rather than movement, or thats what I was told, if that makes sense.
We got 5 pics, 3 were just your usual 2d (like my profile pic), which you get at nhs hosp and 2 were 3d. Although as I say baby looks a bit odd, as was only 17 weeks so doesnt really look like a baby.
The dating scan on the nhs will just be 2d, like my profile pic, that was our 20 week scan.
I think to go for the 3d/4d scan your better waiting until after 25 weeks, if you go now, it wont look like that link, as baby hasnt laid any fat down
Ill try and post the 5 pics we got from the thornbury for you to look at.
Katie1980 28-03-2008, 15:59 See if this works.
http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=1765499&id=576045581
It seems the link actually takes you to all our scan pics, so there is the 12 week, 17 week and 21 week.
emtink12 29-03-2008, 08:34 there really good pics, im really looking forwade now. But i think im going to wait till im about 25. thanks
chickywiggle 12-04-2008, 14:26 hi,
These are probably gonna sound really weird questions but hopefully others are thinking of them 2 and those that have been there done that can answer.
1) my appt is at 8.30am - HOW am i suppoed to have a full bladder?? There is no way I can hold it in all night until then!! Am I gonna have to deliberatly get up at 5am go for a wee then drink water all morning?? How important is this?
2) where can I get a sample pot from? I don't think I will see my midwife again b4 my appt so can't get off her, also cannot get to my surgery without having to take time out of work. Will any surgery give you one?? (for example as i work in town can i get one from devonshire or central health?)
cheers people.
If your appointment is at 8.30am then at around 8am I'd be glugging back the water....
But don't worry cos' I am on my 2nd pregnancy and always forgotten to drink before hand and I've had lots of scans. Never been mentioned to me before!
Urine sample jars - ask at any surgery. or a chemist. Try to do the sample before you go to the hospital for your appointment because otherwise you'll be given a jar and told to go to the loo and this just delays you going for blood tests etc so you end up waiting longer and it drives the nurses mad!
emtink12 12-04-2008, 15:06 I say set your alarm to get up about 7;30 as you might be getting up then to get ready anyway, and have a pee then. After that drink plenty of water, they have it in the waiting room too so you can have loads. After you have your scan you go round the corner (if your in Jessops) to see the midwife, on reception there they have a big box of sample jars there, so pic one up and have a pee just before you see your midwife..
cuteykat 12-04-2008, 17:47 if u pop into ur docs they should b able to give u oine or ask for one when u get there and do one then i went not long ago for my scan and neva had a full bladder :D
cosywolf 12-04-2008, 22:03 You can get a sample bottle at any chemist, though it is likely to cost you 50p.
Tip: they will give you 2 or 3 at the hospital if you ask. Take them...you are supposed to bring a urine sample along to all your midwife appointments, too. They don't seem to have figured out that these things don't appear spontaneously when you need them.
(Tip 2: remember to take them out of your bag when you get home, I've been carrying 3 sample bottles to and from work and shopping for 5 weeks, lol)
I had my 12 weeks scan without a full bladder, and just had one at 17 weeks without again...no problem, no comments made. Don't stress about it.
cosywolf 12-04-2008, 22:06 I'll merge this with the big scan thread tomorrow
You could use an empty bottle like I did. It gave them a laugh at the hospital anyway ;)
Take a different bottle filled with water and drink loads of it while you're waiting so you're all full of water. But don't get your bottles mixed up ;)
Bexstars 13-04-2008, 06:14 dont worry too much about having a full bladder, just drink water before going and hold it till after the scan. Im 21 weeks with my second and have had a few scans already and didnt have a full bladder for any of them and the picture was nice and clear. for a sample, if your at jessops, you will have your scan first, then have to go round to wait for a weigh in and bloods, if you go streight to the front desk there will be a big box full of sample pots so you can do one there and take it in with you when they call you in to be weighed, thats where they will test it for you
chickywiggle 13-04-2008, 11:01 cheers everyone.
BobbyBunny 13-04-2008, 15:33 I've had 5+ scans and I've never had a full bladder for any of them :P I wouldn't worry. Also, with the water sample I didn't have a bottle so I had to do when I got there

Chemists as a rule do not carry sample pots as there are different types of tests and different coloured bottles.
I went for my scan and started drinking the water about 45 mins before i went in for scan then they gave me a sample bottle to pop to loo straight after and it did not take any time at all. :)

I promise some do. Mine came from either Boots or Lloyds, 50p a pot. Honest. (not sure which because I sent a friend and can't remember which I told them to go to, both are at the bottom of the road.)
chickywiggle 23-04-2008, 17:07 got one from boots (near cathedral) cause i know if i wait till i get there after scan no matter how much i drink i won't be able to go (my body is just typical like that). Cost - 67p!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I shall be stocking up at Jessops when I get there!
hiya all,
I have decided to get a sexing scan! I am 32 weeks on friday and looking at the private scan sites the cut off time is 32 weeks. Does anyone know why this is? I will be phoning around tomorrow but want to know if its going to be worth my while.. The OH dont wanna know so me and his little brother maybe going:hihi::hihi: how sneaky are we but we both wanna know:D
thanks
SpeedDemon 02-06-2008, 21:30 When i had late scans with my last pregnancy, they told me that once it gets past a certain stage, because of the fat round their little legs, and the minited space they have to move around by that stage, its difficult to actually see whats in between them. HTH

i though that may be a reason, so i shall try get booked in this week:D dont want to spend £125 for a scan thats not giving me a result:hihi: although it be worth it to see the baby again:D :D
I only decided to go ahead with it cause i getting all my holiday pay this month cause they cant give me holidays before i go off so i getting 100 hours extra this month, on the day i start my mat leave .. how good is that :D :D
SpeedDemon 03-06-2008, 07:27 How on EARTH are you gonna keep it from your OH? I wouldn't be able to contain mayself once i knew the sex. My hubby didn't really wanna know what we were having last time OR this time but he knew i'd have to get my own way or sulk for months :hihi:
SpeedDemon 03-06-2008, 07:28 PS didnt someone mention on another thread that you can have a sexing scan for around 50 quid? Or is it that 4D thing you're wantin?
*Peaches* 03-06-2008, 07:46 Normal 2d scans your looking about £40 quid, 3d £75. The cut off is 32 weeks because of the space available for manouvre to check the sex, but saying that the hospital told me again at 34 weeks he was a boy x
mbunting 03-06-2008, 08:00 I didn't want to know what we were having but when I saw mr mbuntings face in the scan room when we went for the 4d scan I just crumbled. He looked like a kid looking through the window of the worlds best toy shop knowing he can't go in !!
I am so pleased we did find out though because I was convinced that we were having a boy. We have a girl. So much for womens intuition !
PS didnt someone mention on another thread that you can have a sexing scan for around 50 quid? Or is it that 4D thing you're wantin?
its £75 just for basic scan, i did find somewhere cheaper a few months back when i was looking, but for life of me i cant find it now! I get 2 large photos with this one.
The baby is breech just now and had a hell of a day today with it so cant wait to see it! I all booked in for Friday at 3.45:D :D
I can hold it back from him cause he really does not want to know, i just want to know as the "suprise" the first time round was not as exciting as i thought i would feel ! Its his first, also we are calling the baby he or she at random rather than "it" so i can cover it up if i slip up:hihi::hihi:
tinkabel 06-06-2008, 15:12 Ohhhh Savbaby are you going to let us know?
Bet you were all excited this morning!!
Oooo i hope it's a little boy :D
C'mon Sav, let us know :P
cant say it on open forum just incase he reads it:suspect: butyes i foundout! once i get scanner up and runnin will share the photo:D
So share via pms or tell us it's the same sex as such and such a persons...... like, is it the same sex at Gina's baby? Or the same sex as AnnieC's?
C'mooooooon!
I best get in touch with gina then:hihi:
I know, I know
I knew at bang on 7pm :P :hihi:

just couple photos :) they gave me 3 A4 photos which was good :D
Quite clear, Sav. :D I want one  :hihi:
Hope someone can answer me this. . . .
I am due my 12 week antenatal appointment next week and was looking forward to the scan and having some pics to take home. But Ive found out that if you have already had an early scan you will not be offered one at this appointment?!
I'm hoping that because I had a miscarriage before and want to check that everything is ok that they will give me one if I ask.
Anyone know if I'll be able to have or been through the same thing??
:help:
becky
catzeyesF 08-07-2008, 13:03 Sorry I cant help you, just wanted to say congratulations :)
shihtzumad 08-07-2008, 13:05 Congratulations.
Why not ring the hospital are speak to your midwife and tell them your concerns.
foxforcefive 08-07-2008, 13:05 Well going back nearly 7 years, I had a scan a month and had photos from each, just ask, I'm sure they'll oblige.
shihtzumad 08-07-2008, 13:06 Did you no there is a parenting group

cosywolf 08-07-2008, 13:32 Thanks for the recommendation, zumad :shihtzumad
Yes, do come have a look in Parenting, Beck21, there's plenty of information, support and laughter there. And if you search on 'scans' once you're there, you'll find pretty much everything you ever wanted to know about them. Or just ask, someone will point you in the right direction.
SpeedDemon 08-07-2008, 13:44 Hiya - With speedy baby 4, I had a scan in the hallamshire early pregnancy unit at 5 weeks pregnant, then also the normal scan at 12 weeks at chesterfield hospital. The 5 week scan was just a little blob with a heartbeat, 12 week scan was totally different. With speedy baby 5, i was scanned at chesterfield at 7 weeks, then again at 12 weeks. It may be different at jessops, but i wouldn't think so, as even when you've had an early scan, they consider the 12 weeks scan to be the "dating scan". Congratulations anyway :)
Bexstars 08-07-2008, 14:02 Hiya
you will still have the 12 week scan. I had early scans with my 2 year old due to early bleeding and had the 12 week one as normal at jessops and have had the same this time around too. Bleeding around 7 weeks so I had an early scan at the early pregnancy unit at the hallamshire and then still went on to have the 12 week scan at jessops. The 12 week one is more of a dating scan so you will get an official due date at this time and a chance to see your little baby looking like a baby :D
Congratulations xx
Thank you everyone for the help I feel lots better about it now! x x:thumbsup:
cosywolf 08-07-2008, 14:56 Beck, during my first pregnancy i also had 2 early scans and was given the 12 wekk scan without question or discussion.
HOWEVER: never be afraid to request whatever you need - information, scans, appointments. They can be very busy and seem to forget that to us it isn't an everyday business, but a scary, emotional and vulnerable time. Calmly explaining your worries and questions is absolutely fair enough, never walk away with burning questions, unsure or worried.
lauren84 08-07-2008, 15:09 My friend had a scan at 6 weeks, then at 12 weeks and 20 weeks and got a pic of all three.
ScaredyKat 08-07-2008, 19:55 I think it depends on when you had your early scan - I had one at 8 weeks, and they told me then that because they'd been able to "date" the baby I wouldn't get a 12 week scan. When I went for my 12 week antenatal appointment I asked them if I could have a scan and they said no (I was hoping to persuade them!). They said that the dating scan is officially any time between 8-12 weeks, so if your early scan was before 8 weeks you should still get another one.
Hope that helps
Kat
I also had a scan at 7 weeks due to getting severe numbness in one leg, we then discovered we were expecting twins :D
Second scan at 12 weeks and then at 20 without discussion.
Because it's classed as a high risk pregnancy it was then every 4 weeks or so from 28 weeks. So don't worry, some of us get more than our fair share and in my experience they don't quibble :)
x-GiGgLeS-x 09-07-2008, 05:52 Hi,
I had my first scan at 5 weeks pregnant and then because I had some unexplained bleeding I had another at 7 weeks. Then 1 at 12 weeks and so on and for every scan I got a pic. The 5 week 1 looks just like a dot. But its good to show my son when he's older. :)
muckynees 09-07-2008, 16:27 Don't worry too much hun, I had a scan at 10 weeks at the epu and still had a scan at 12 weeks, best thing to do is keep stum about the early scan if you are worried they wont scan you, unless you are asked specifically about the early scan :)
And congrats!
jellybellybean 13-09-2008, 11:32 Hi. I've got my first scan on Tuesday, I'll be about 10weeks. I thought this was a little early as isn't meant to be 12weeks? I hope we'l be able to see something!
Anyhow what I'm wondering is does anybody know how many scan pics you can buy at Jessops and also how much they cost?
Thanks
I think you get either 1 or 2 free then the rest you have to buy, £2 each i think my brother said...
Good luck!! :)
no you don't get any free at your routine scans (between 10-12 and 18-22 weeks) they cost £2 each or 3 for £5.
jellybellybean 13-09-2008, 12:19 Do i need to tell them beforehand that Im wanting pics or will they ask or just assume I do want them?
I think there is a sign that tells you to ask for photos when you go in for the scan but I forgot the second time and asked at the end and they still gave me them. Prices were as anniec says when I had my baby in 2007.
I'm sure you'll be able to see something. The pictures on the screen are much clearer than the print out you get in my opinion. I was 16 weeks by the time I had mine though so I could see quite a bit.
cuteykat 13-09-2008, 12:55 i told mine i wanted em but she usually ask but just mention it b4 they are 2 pound each unless they havent ne cards then there a quid each mine was ne way
Bexstars 13-09-2008, 17:00 I always mentioned at the start of the scan that Id like a piccy, I think they charged £3 for one
you will certainly be able to see something, I had one at 8 weeks with my daughter and could see her wriggling about and she looked like a tiny baby already ;)
jellybellybean 21-09-2008, 13:06 Just thought I'd let you know everything was fine at my scan and I didn't get charged for pics and I got 3! I don't know if they were just feeling generous that day or if it was cos I let a student do it they let me have them free as a thank you. But it was very nice of them either way!
