So, with the new Doctor Who coming out soon, I feel compelled to create a thread to ask who people think was the best of the original Doctors?

Vote in the poll and discuss.

For me the best Doc was a toss up between Tom Baker and Sylvester McCoy, although the main reason I liked the McCoy era was cos I fancied Sophie Aldred who played Ace.

It's Tom Baker by a country mile!

Tom Baker was THE Dr Who and Sarah Jane Smith was the best ever side kick. All the later Dr Whos have been rubbish and should be exterminated.

Patrick Troughton, John Pertwee and Tom Baker was the best, Peter Davidson wasn't "too" bad, but when things got to Colin Baker, things went downhill faster than a manic depressed lemming on a pair of skates.

The Dr got younger, the plot lines sillier, the acting more wooden than bill and ben..........

Let's hope that the new series brings some decent stories to the show.

I liked Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy because I remember them from when I was young. McCoy was the best, although had I been alive when Tom Baker was the Doctor I'm sure he would be my favourite.

Who the hell voted Paul McGann?

Why has nobody mentioned Peter Cushing? He was the original big-screen Doctor!

By the way, just for the record, the new thing people refer to as the film was never intended as that. As I remember it, it was a pilot show for a US version of Dr Who which was so poor it was never picked up for series.

You missed an option off on the poll...None of them, it was a crap program to begin with.

Well, you can save the odd keystroke then, can't you, and not bother voting or commenting.....

Toss up between Tom Baker and Jon Pertwee, eventually coming down on the side of TB because several of my favourite stories were from the TB years - particularly The Genesis of the Daleks, The Pyramids of Mars and The Talons of Weng Chiang...

Jon Pertwee had a couple of my other favourites - The Autons and the Daemons.

Peter Davidson had some good stories, though.

Got to be Tom Baker - for me, his character and appearance personified who the Doctor was supposed to be.

Also had fabulous chemistry with his Assistants, and was in most of my favourite episodes - in particular, I remember being mesmerised by the "Pyramids of Mars".

I also have a certain fondness for Peter Davison's Doctor, though, and Jon Pertwee had his moments.

I read something somewhere which says that your favourite Doctor Who is determined solely by who was playing him when you started watching it. Jon Pertwee played Doctor Who when I started watching (although I vaguely remember Patrick Troughton. I only remember re-runs of William Hartnell!).

There, that's my age given away!

I've said it before but i think when Tom Baker put in an appearance the entire show went steadily downhill but maybe I was just getting older and finding other things to entertain me.
I was heavily in to Doctor Who throughout Jon Pertwee's time but always have liked the two previous to him namely patrick and William. I don't think I was allowed to watch many of the early episodes as they were very scary!!

I caught a few episodes my mate had of the old Dr. Who from times when I wasn't born and It amazed me how good John Pertwee was. I always thought he looked like the typical Doctor also.

i voted for william hartnell as he was the first and to me looked like what he supposed to look like an old doctor but i must admit i thought christopher eccleston was great and am dissapointed in him going but my vote would not be with the doctors but with the aliens the daleks as they were great they still frightened me when i was older i rememember taking 2 of my lads into the dr who exhibition and dragged them out when we got to the daleks and they spoke i realy thought they were going to exterminate me my lads thought i was so funny, even i had to laugh at myself.

Tom Baker, definately.
As for assistants, Leilah was good, and K9.

Yes tom baker was the best classic tv doctor basically because of his eccentricity and that wonderful 12 ft scarf.

I had a thing for that Australian woman who was with Peter Davison, and also Ace (Sophie Aldred) om the McCoy era... Ace looked HOT in those short black skirts..

Seeing Dr.Who on the telly,I cant believe I watched it 40yrs.ago with my sons hiding behind my chair when the music came on.But who do you think was the best actor who played Dr.Who ? I think I liked the very first one,an actor called William Hartnell(I think,I may be wrong) Also the present one is very good, such a difference in their styles of acting.I like Billie Piper a lot.

most people will say Tom Baker, but I haven't seen much of his run. Pat Troughton is such a brilliant Doctor, so he has my vote!

It tends to be the one you grew up with. When I was little it was Peter Davidson (but I was a bit yuong then), Colin Baker (but he was a bit crap) and Sylvester McCoy (who gets my vote cos I was about 9 when he was doc - the optimum age to get a fave doctor I think). Though I love Chris and David, too....

Tom Baker was great; his autobiography is a brilliant and very funny read. Did you know he was a novice Monk for a while? I grew up with Jon Pertwee. Ecclestone was ace and the new guy is shaping up very well indeed. Didn't think much to McCoy. Too silly.

Although I very vaguely remember William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton was the Doctor when I first started watching it regularly as a young lad. I have a vague and nightmarish recollection of the series where peoples hair grew into snakes and some turned to stone! Then Jon Pertwee arrived and I thought he was the best, especially in the Earth based episodes featuring UNIT and the Brigadier. When he changed into Tom Baker I seem to remember being extremely sad, however Tom Baker quickly became a firm favourite with me and is the one I remember with the most affection. Never really saw much of the next generations until this recent revival. Christopher Eccleston was very good, my judgement is currently reserved on Mr Tennant.

I think this all depends on who was playing Dr who when you were a kid, thats the one which will prob be your favourite.

I can remember watching all the doctor who's, and although I have voted for Pertwee, I would have voted for Christopher Eccleston if he had been there. I liked his attitude!

I wouldn't vote for him on principal that he only did one series to boost his career, everyone knows that if you play the doctor you're supposed to do it for a couple of years at least.

Yep, Tom Baker for me too, but it was close between him and Jon Pertwee.
Not too sure about Mr Tennant, tho, cos I thought Eccleston was FAB.!!!
But, I shall wait until the new season is well underway before I decide, I cant really pass judgement after just one episode!:P
