I used to live on Pickering Road. We used to go down the station steps to school, over the railway bridge where we used to stand and let the steam cover us all as the train went past, then down some more steps, onto Farfield Road, then Hoyland Road, past the coal yard and on to Hillfoot School. It was alright going down the station steps, but they seemed endless when going up them. I remember calling for Susan Fisher and Lynn Brammer who lived on Wallace Road and we walk ed down together to school. I remember the crates of milk left out in the sun all day (never liked to drink milk on its own since that time). There used to be a coal heap that we all used to climb on which fed the boilers. Does anyone else remember those times. pastille 23-06-2007, 21:24 did anyone go to hillfoot school in 1956 - 1962 Hi Katrina - I have just put a new thread on named Hillfoot School 1954 to 1960, this was the time I was at Hillfoot then I moved to Chaucer School. Have a possible Maurice Fineberg ( surely there coudn't have been two ) at Tom Lane 10, did find him in a directory as a teacher whilst looking for someone else but lost the info. I don't know of a relation at Parkwood hotel though it does raise an interesting point. Maybe something worth looking into . I do recall the Mr.fineberg , ( teacher at hillfoot ),having lived on Vale road at one point . However , I do recall having met him sometime after I left school , he and his wife living at Fulwood , picking up on a comment about some people living up near them with net curtains up to the front windows because they had no furniture in the front room . Weather that was just a quip I have no idea . mikebatty 14-12-2011, 21:37 I can remember , as some of the other contributors have made comments about , going to school from Parkwood springs along the road by the coal hoppers which filled the wagons . On one occasion , one of the wagons which had rather overfilled , had spilt a little of his load into the roadside . One , very old, lady picked up some of the coal and put it into her bag .Some overzealous young police constable - no doubt eager for promotion - escorted her from the scene under arrest , presumably for theft , amidst very loud protestations from the kids on their way to school ,at what we saw to be very unfair . So you see , kids do have a sense of what is fair and unfair . kevm 06-03-2012, 20:42 I didn't start at Hillfoot till 1961,but I remember Miss Buxton. My best mate was Paul Westaby who lived in Farfield Road.My grandparents lived at the top of Hoyland Road.Joe and Edith Greenfield.Since moving far away I was stunned when I visited recently to see what was left of the place as I remembered it.Very sad. |
