View Full Version : Rottie may have cancer in front leg
i took my 4 year old rottie to vet today because she started limping last night. the vets asked me to take her back tomorrow for xrays because vet thinks she may have a tumor in her front leg. this was far from what i was expecting. it's really upset me. has anyone got any information or personal experience of this cause i could really do with some help. thanks everyone for reading this thread.
baileys_mum 11-01-2007, 18:22 I don't have any experience, just wanted to wish you good luck :)
thank you its nice to know people care
Oh I'm so sorry Jennie1, I've had a friend who had a collie in a similar situation about 15 years ago. Thankfully they were able to stop the cancer but the dog lost it's leg. Now this might sound bad, however within 6 months of the operation the dog was bounding around like it had 4 legs and ghost chasing it!
So I guess it's not all that bad news that it could be - just take things a step at a time and just love the dog as much as you can in the meantime. It might not be cancer and if it is they would possibly have a good chance of stopping it.
LitleMermaid 11-01-2007, 18:28 I don't have experience either but I'm sure someone will be along soon who does:)
EDIT: Someone came along when I wasn't looking^^^^^lol
What an awful thing for you to be going through, give your doggy a cuddle from me, sorry I can't be of more help, also just wanted to say good luck:)
Sorry no experience either but good luck to you and you're doggy x
thanks everyone for your replies myself and starsky appreciate it
Moonbird 12-01-2007, 08:56 Fingers crossed for today :)
thanks for everyones concern. the vets says the xrays are clear at the moment, but they can't give an explanation why she has gone lame in that leg. she's been given painkillers and as got to be checked every couple of weeks. because there isn't a tumor now it does not mean there won't be one in a month. we are all being positive and i will keep you posted. fingers crossed.:)
LitleMermaid 13-01-2007, 20:10 I hope you can keep positive and focus on the fact that there isn't a tumor at the moment rather then what may happen in future, I know it must be hard to though:)
Good luck and do keep us posted!
A neighbour of mine had the same problem with her Grott, and you may find a thread by Dawny that predates the pets group about her boxer who had the same problem
it must have been a shock to receive this news - and then to be told there is nothing there :(
Fingers crossed that it's just a strain and your dog is right as rain soon :)
just thought i'd give u all a update. starskys feeling alot better today, don't know if it's the painkillers or it was just something she's done to hurt her leg but she's alot happier so i am. won't know for sure for a month but things are looking up. big thank you to all.
keep us updated jennie :)
been back to vets today. they are very positve. got to keep giving pain killers and upping her exercise. back in 3 weeks. alls looking up.
good luck.
try feeling up the top of the leg, which would be the equivalent of your armpit. if you feel lumps up there (in my experience it's not good news). however on a young dog, amputation is a feasible option.
my dog was rather poorly and quite aged when we found it - there was only solution for us.
Frolikalki 20-01-2007, 01:26 Hi Jen,
One of my Rotts went lame the same way as yours, without any warning. One day fine, the next lame. We had him to the vets, who after finding nothing told us it could be a tumor and then decided to x-ray. The x-ray came back clear, but Duke was still limping. The vet put him on Bute powders, and it eased the pain for him, but still the xx limp. We were lucky enough to get a more intense x-ray done (courtesy of working at the veterinary college) and this showed that he had OCD - flaking cartilage on the joints. Apparently at 10 months, he was a little young to be starting with OCD, but he was a big (tall not overweight) lad. He was operated on and they successfully removed the flaking cartilage from both front legs.
According to the vets, he was affected that bad, they said that he would be crippled with arthritis by the time he was 4 years old, and he would have to be put to sleep.
With gentle exercise on a permanent basis, Duke lived a full and happy, pain-free life until the age of 8 years, when eventually it became too much for him, and we had to do what we didn't want to do.
So Jen, keep your hopes up and stay positive. The vets are great at what they do, but they don't always get the diagnosis spot on, and they can't predict a time limit on love and TLC.
Trish

thought i'd let you all know we went back to vet yesterday did more tests bu finally we got an answer. theres NO TUMOR. hurray she has got arthritus and will need to be checked every so often. a big thanks to all for your kind words.
I'm so glad to hear that you've had this good news.
Arthritis isn't an easy thing either- but it gives you more time with her (and no surgery), and that must be such a relief for you.
