View Full Version : Snow, including predictions, for winter 2007
WintersMist 14-10-2006, 19:23 It's that time of year again, when I accept that summer is over and that winter is inevitable. Which brings me to the delightful ponderings of a cold, harsh, snowy winter!
So does anybody have insider info about this winter's weather?
I dream of big drifts of snow blocking my front door and having to face a week of soup in front of the telly......instead I get the pleasure of facing hurricane winds and that 'spitting' rain, as I battle through to work!
So come on, "DO WE THINK ITS GONNA SNOW?"
All responses appreciated
WintersMist 14-10-2006, 19:32 I think yes...no...i hope....sad face..

All well and good I suppose if you don't have to struggle to get to work etc Snow its a menace and I sincerely hope that we don't get one solitary flake this winter.
It's almost certain that it will snow somewhere- just whether it will be in Britain is the question.
BobbyBunny 14-10-2006, 19:39 I hope it snows. I absolutely love snow.
Its the best. I love being snowed into the house. Its fun.
WintersMist 14-10-2006, 19:48 I hope we get all the flakes we can handle :)
English snow isn't up to much, and neither is our transport links! Hehehe
Jabberwocky 14-10-2006, 19:59 Every winter I start scanning the sky and weather channels for sign of snow.
In summer I do the same for thunder.
I love both.
bring on some good blizzards! snow rocks, makes the place look clean for a while - at least till it goes all brown sludge anyroads.
i love it when everything comes to a stand still, people have to leave work early the schools shut its fun, thats what i remember when i was young, my kids haven,t seen that type of snow when you used to open the front door and the snow used to fall in the house caus it was that high.
BobbyBunny 14-10-2006, 20:05 I remember once I opened the front door and got covered in show. We have a veranda thing over our front door and all the snow fell off it onto me. :D
Was great. My mum wouldn't let me go to school in fear I'd "catch my death". I also remember standing at the bus stop for what seemed like endless hours (was actually 45 minutes) until 8.45 in the morning, running home (during a snow storm) only to hear on the radio ten minutes later that my school was closed. My Grandad sent me to the bus stop for the laugh.
Great.
Moyesyside 14-10-2006, 20:15 No, dont want it to snow `cos old people might die.
Jabberwocky 14-10-2006, 20:26 We get cut off by the snow here occasionally because we`re in a relatively remote place.
awesome.
rubydazzler 14-10-2006, 20:44 No, dont want it to snow `cos old people might die.
Awwww! thank you, I appreciate that thought ... here have one of me Wether's Originals ...:)
RazorSHarp 14-10-2006, 20:54 I can guarantee it won't snow as I've just bought a new 4x4 this year !!
richardl21 14-10-2006, 21:40 Appen it'll either snow or get cold afore't Spring.
:loopy:
WintersMist 14-10-2006, 21:41 No, dont want it to snow `cos old people might die.
ermmm...that's a bit off putting, whilst we are on the lively debate of the jolities of snow.
"Snow, glorious snow. Cold, fluffy and delicious!" :hihi:
On a more serious note, why should old people die because of snow? Your generalising winter. For it to snow it has to warm up a degree or snow, does it not? :suspect: not sure bout that... Actually that brings me to another serious question.
"It's too cold to snow." - Is that correct? You hear everyone say it, golly you probably say it yourself. But if that was true, how come it can snow in the Artic? Hmmm? Now I'm sure some much cleverer person is going to put me in my place, but I would appreciate the info.
 WM
I hope it does snow, it's the best weather. With regard to it being too cold to snow read below:
One phrase that is heard from time to time is that, "it is too cold to snow today". In actuality, earth's troposphere is not too cold to snow but rather it is "too dynamically stable to snow". Dynamic stability may be present due to low-level cold air advection, a lack of upper level divergence, and/or a lack of low level convergence. Also, if dynamic lifting does occur it may not produce precipitation that reaches the surface due to low relative humidity values in the lower troposphere.
The ingredients for snow are: (1) a temperature profile that allows snow to reach the surface, (2) saturated air, and (3) enough lifting of that saturated air to allow snow to develop aloft and fall to reach the surface. In a situation when it is said "it is too cold to snow" there is in reality not enough lifting of air that causes snow to reach the surface.
The phrase "it is too cold to snow today" probably originated as a misapplication of the relationship between temperature and the maximum amount of water vapor that can be in the air. When temperature decreases, the maximum capacity of water vapor that can be in the air decreases. Therefore, the colder it gets the less water vapor there will be in the air.
Even at very cold surface temperatures significant snowfall can occur because: (1) intense lifting can produce significant precipitation even at a very low temperature, (2) the temperature aloft can be much warmer than the temperature at the surface. The relatively warmer air aloft can have a larger moisture content than air in the PBL, (3) Moisture advection can continue to bring a renewed supply of moisture into a region where lifting is occurring, (4) Even at very cold temperatures the air always has a capacity to have some water vapor.
If the air cools to truly frigid Arctic temperatures such as -40 C and below then the moisture capacity of the air will be so low that likely not much snow can occur. Only at these extremely low temperatures is the phrase "it is too cold to snow" fairly valid.
At the temperature of absolute zero ( 0 K, -273 C, -459 F) all air including water vapor condenses and loses all molecular energy. The temperature can not cool below absolute zero.
i hope it doesn't snow it's snow fun on a motor bike.i had the fun and excitement of trying to ride down hag hill last year just after a heavy dumping of snow.don't mind the cold though
oh, I hope it snows. it's beautiful. i can stay up all night just watching snow.
No, dont want it to snow `cos old people might die.
not having a go or owt and i will say now that i do like it to snow and find "splashing" amusing but its a funny set of morals that you have. you dont want it to snow because of old people but at the same time think its great to splash people with a car.
i just find that a little strange

Unregistered 15-10-2006, 06:22 Does anybody have insider info about this winter's weather?
So come on, "DO WE THINK ITS GONNA SNOW?"
Owing to lack of interest, and a bit of global warming, snow has been cancelled this year.
Christmas dinner will now be served on Skegness Beach, in the shade under the pineapple and orange trees - it ain't so bracing anymore.
Winter sunblock will be the ideal Christmas gift this year.
........as if.

I think they are correct morals, how can you compare death to getting a little wet?:loopy: Come on fella, sort it out.
Ahhhhh sledging down Jacobs ladder in the winter.... soooooo much fun.

czechroman 15-10-2006, 14:05 Says its getting colder this week too, but doubt any snow yet.
WintersMist 16-10-2006, 20:45 Quick update - Watching weather last night on the box, and I'm sure the weatherperson was teasing me! :o I can't be sure, becuase the excitment had gripped me, but he mentioned something about it getting cold and rainy, but by the end of the week we might see something a little more colder! And they said it all mystifying :suspect:
So keep a watch on the skies and every weather report.

blondie-blue 13-11-2006, 07:59 Right can some please set me straight here, for the last week or so my boss has been going on about how she's heard on the radio that within the next 3 weeks we're going to be knee deep in snow and temperature's at -4 :loopy: ive looked on the bbc weather report for the next month or so and they haven't mentioned anything about snow....!!!!!!
alchemist 13-11-2006, 08:08 Perhaps they are listening to the Norwegian forcast by mistake??
Escafeldia 13-11-2006, 08:22 Perhaps they are listening to the Norwegian forcast by mistake??
No - Norway already has it on the mountains. I think she's been looking at the Swedish forecast. They are due for some snow in the next couple of weeks. They have already had a small fall in Stockholm, which is now thawing, and more is expected in eary December. It happens every year apparently. The Swedes are getting ready for it by trolling around on long roller blades with trekking poles so they will be up to scratch when they change to skis.
dizzy_chick 13-11-2006, 08:28 I heard on the radio this morning that we are heading for a cold snap by the end of the week.
yummyyumyum 13-11-2006, 08:39 my nan also told me the other day that snow was on the way,
she would only here this on radio sheffield or similar.
i have to say the tempreture is really dropping around tea time so i suppose theres a fair chance.
i love snow so i hope its true!

sTaGeWaLkEr 13-11-2006, 08:42 Yayyyy!
I hope so. I love snow!
Not too keen on ice, just in case I slip and fall on my booty, but snow? bring it on.
It's about time we had a proper snow covered Christmas again.
:)
According to Metcheck, there could be a cold snap towards the end of next week, then it will get considerably milder. No mention of snow.
Right can some please set me straight here, for the last week or so my boss has been going on about how she's heard on the radio that within the next 3 weeks we're going to be knee deep in snow and temperature's at -4 :loopy: ive looked on the bbc weather report for the next month or so and they haven't mentioned anything about snow....!!!!!!
Yes I've heard it too and it was in yesterday's People newspaper.
I think its mainly in Scotland to start with then moving down, but I do remember thinking when I saw it on the telly, oh ohhhh :suspect: Sheffield then. ( I still have relatives and friends there)
Oh and the odds for a "festive snowfall" as they put it is higher than for some time.
Escafeldia 13-11-2006, 08:55 Bugger it! I have declined a Christmas with my daughter in Stockholm because of the snow. If you like it I suggest you go to Sweden they have plenty and it stays until around May. Brrrrrrrr - snow - keep it for the Christmas cards. :gag: :gag:
sTaGeWaLkEr 13-11-2006, 08:56 A couple of years ago, we were on our way to spend Christmas in Scotland at my friend's hotel. It was in a remote area, with a mile of it's own driveway, and completely isolated from the rest of the world.
We drove the majority of the long route with no snow (this was Christmas Day) the roads were relatively clear. As we approached our destination we drove over a blind summit and suddenly, from nowhere, we were completely surrounded by snow! Mountains of it. Literally.
The sun was shining the brightest I had ever seen and everything was completely covered in snow. It was absolutely remarkable.
We had to stop the car and take it all in. You couldn't hear a sound! Amazing!
Why is it you never have your camera with you when you need it...
Just thought I'd share that with you.
czechroman 13-11-2006, 09:58 Did hear that before months out we were going to have snow, we will see though:confused:

I heard on the radio this morning that we are heading for a cold snap by the end of the week.
I'm also heading for some cold snap this weekend. Oven's just blown up.
It's all down to Global warming. I recommend everyone to go and watch the "An Inconvenient Truth" documentary by Al Gore. It's scary what we are doing to the world...
carcrash 13-11-2006, 11:18 The long term forcast says that the weather is going to be similar to what we have at the moment with some overnight frosts
Good, I love a bit of snow, infact the more the better. Ski Slope here I come!
Radio 2 this morning said it was downhill from Wednesday
BasilRathbon 13-11-2006, 11:50 Whenever it's a quiet day for news, one of the papers will lead with a scary weather story.
If this is between April and September, the story will be that it's going to be freakishly hot due to global warming and we're all going to die.
If this is between October and March, the sotry will be that it's going to be freakishly cold due to the impending next Ice Age and we're all going to die.
Stop panicking! The weather for the next few weeks is going to be a bit like last winter, the winter before that and the winter before that.
Greybeard 13-11-2006, 13:26 Stop panicking! The weather for the next few weeks is going to be a bit like last winter, the winter before that and the winter before that.
Who's panicking ? :)
Last year's first snowfall here (Bradfield) occcurred on the 28th November, the year before it was the 18th November, and quite deep - 7cm.
I doubt we can expect any significant snowfall until mid January but the sooner the better, - I'm itching to use my new snow shovel
matt1889 13-11-2006, 13:56 Ive spent time scanning over all major weather sites, and none of these mention any snow on the way.
The main page "Met office" state that the worst we can expect upto christmas would be what we have allready experienced at late, strong gales / heavy rain, so i dont think you need to worry all that much.
Allthough I will say that a couple of sources indicate that we should be surprised if we get some sort of Heavy snow fall in Feb / Mar next year according to early predictions?
Escafeldia 13-11-2006, 14:15 So 7cm (3 inches) of snow is heavy? I don't suppose you'll remember when Fox House was snowed in with snow up to the top of the telegraph poles? Heavy snow is when you get about 60cm (2 feet) or above. Of course if we get a couple of cm's it will stop the traffic - it always does. :hihi: :hihi:
Met office 5 day forecast for Sheffield...
Tuesday:
daytime light rain max 11c
nightime light rain min 9c
Wednesday:
daytime heavy rain max 14c
nightime heavy rain min 11c
Thursday:
daytime light rain max 11c
nightime light rain max 9c
Friday:
daytime heavy rain max 9c
nightime light rain showers min 4c
The next fortnight looks mild wet and windy.Maybe a bit of snow on the scothish mountains but nothing in our area for the forseable future.
Monthly Summary
BBC Broadcast Meteorologist Everton Fox updates this forecast for the coming month every Monday using information from the Met Office.
Temperatures remain average for this time of year.
After an unsettled start, quieter weather is expected to develop from the south. Temperatures look set to fall back towards average values bringing an increasing risk of frost.
Now that the Christmas lights have been switched on in many areas it seems appropriate that we should now get some snow, albeit largely restricted to the Scottish mountains.
We had a little of all sorts of weather last week with frost and dense fog patches causing problems early on. There were also some good spells of warm sunshine, especially in the south. We finished the week with strong winds stripping leaves from the trees. We had gusts as high as 80mph in Scotland on Saturday.
There is a trend towards cooler weather over this coming period with an increasing risk of night frosts during any quieter spells of weather.
Monday 13th to Sunday 19th November: “Bright and breezy - expect strong winds”
The week ahead does look pretty unsettled. Bright and breezy should be a fair description of the weather in the early part of the week with showery outbreaks mainly confined to the south.
It should be a mild start to the week with above average temperatures but it seems likely that it will become increasingly cold weather from the north. We may even see some significant snowfalls over the higher ground.
On a brighter note, the blustery winds will tend to blow the showers or bands of rain through fairly quickly so we should all get some decent spells of sunshine at times.
Monday 20th to Sunday 26th November: “Unsettled - threat of frost and heavy rain”
We are likely to take the unsettled weather into this week with temperatures continuing to struggle, especially in the north.
The threat of heavy rain along with some snow will stay with us and we will almost certainly have some frosts and icy roads to watch out for during any clearer spells.
Monday 27th to Sunday 10th December: “Temperatures remain average - chance of some sunshine”
In a mobile westerly flow, temperatures are expected to be close to if not a little above average across the southern half of the UK. It may be the middle of December before temperatures finally recover in the north.
There is a hint towards a drier spell of weather for most of us but it does seem likely that west will be best for sunshine.

I said 7cm was quite deep, - which it was for a mid-November snowfall, - it had drifted to a depth of a foot or more in some places.
In fact I remember the winters of 62/63 and the dreadful winter of 1947, but more recently in 2001 a drift alongside Onesmoor of five feet tapering down to three feet blocking about two hundred yards of Kirk Edge road. The council got Hague's to dig it out with a JCB.
We often have lying snow up here when the townies see not a flake ;)
It would be nice to have have some snow at Christmas for a change :) usually we get it round about Jan/ early Feb
MuteWitness 13-11-2006, 18:23 Thats it we will just have to all chip in and buy sheffield a snow making machine!

Just looked at the BBC monthly outlook and there is no mention of snow this month at all anywhere but in the scottish highlands but with the 80 mph winds also forcast for there I really wouldnt go sledging if I were you.

xpaddyxuk 11-01-2007, 20:57 Too warm for snow? Too cold for snow? I never understand that
Snow is caused when extreme cold weather meets warm weather basically, soooooo since its been warm and they say really cold wether is on its way that would explain the snow rumours......aparantly !!!
kittenta 11-01-2007, 22:04 Has anyone noticed that when they say it's going to drizzle it belts it down. When the say it's going to be sunny, it rains. When they say it's going to warm up it gets colder. The only way to know if it is going to snow is by standing outside, looking up and waiting for it
gravity-slave 12-01-2007, 07:55 What would be classed as too cold for snow then?
I've often heard this...
but it's not true.
I've been in minus 20 temps with snowfall so thick you can hardly see through it!
Oooh....it's very grey today. My Mum would say "there's snow in that sky" :help:
firecracker 12-01-2007, 09:09 Anything above 4 or 5 snowflakes and the trains will stop

Lindseyw 14-01-2007, 18:05 thats when my daughter was just too young to remember it . maybe i should have phrased it better .
Not at all - I wasn't splitting hairs - just hoping they get some :)
Littlepink 14-01-2007, 18:09 i didn't think you was splitting hairs at all Lindseyw,:) i've got everything crossed in the hope it snows too. lets just hope its a convenient time ,like on a saturday when we don't have to get to work ( ok i know some people work at the weekend but we can't please everyone ;) )
Anything above 4 or 5 snowflakes and the trains will stop
I'd disagree, the trains actually seem to run better in snow at least I've never seen them delayed due to snow. Leaves on the line is entirely different ;)
I just hope there isn't any snow or temps in the minus until I'm off Park Hill flats. We're going to freeze our finger ends off down there if the temperature takes a dip. It's cold enough as it is and we're already wearing 2 pairs of gloves. :o No snow until at least Feb' please!
fox20thc 14-01-2007, 18:56 The rumour is the snow will start in Feb. :)
Maybe 'too cold to snow' comes about from the fact that when the temperature is very low in the UK it's generally because the skies are clear and we have cold winds coming down from the artic, these winds don't carry any moisture, hence no snow.
We tend to get snow when the temperature is low and we have our more normal south westerlies coming in from the atlantic/irish sea.
Right according the netweather there is a chance of snow next weekend - so there is the heads up :) of course by the time next weekend gets here it'll all have changed!
Greybeard 14-01-2007, 21:39 It will snow at some this winter, and when it does there'll be a long thread here on how long people were stuck in jams and why don't they have the same problems in Sweden etc. etc. :D
I believe the Met Office are tipping a cold spell in February...which is a pretty safe bet really.
johnphilip 15-01-2007, 17:33 Am I the only one to get fed up of the Mild, Wet and windy weather? sick of getting drenched
Apparently last week, the nighttime temperatures were what you would expect in June (11c).
Does anyone long for snowstorms and some freezing weather? a proper winter, like we used to have
Ahhh... someone needs to look at next week's weather on netweather forcast :)
Ms_Tetley 15-01-2007, 17:43 no snow thank you :D ..its ok when it first comes but after about an hour i get fedup..lol. :hihi:
i wished it would snow love going sledging
I would LOVE it to snow.
I am also terminally fed up of this namby-pamby drizzley wet weather that doesn't know what the heck it is.
So, come on! Weather - just show us you've got one more snowey winter in you before the UK becomes the tropical paradise that we're threatened with! :)
troubledjoe 15-01-2007, 18:03 aargh i hate snow!! its cold, gets you wet, makes life a general misery!! bring on global warming!!
Only if it snows good and proper - a couple of feet so that I can't drive to work because its a blizzard. If not then no i don't.
Well be patient people - it's coming next week! (hopefully)
yes!!! snow pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease!!!

I think you have hit the nail on the head. If its gonna snow, then do it properly
What I hate is when we get about 2 inches, because
1) the snow turns to black ice so quickly, people falling on their asses (its funny when it happens to someone else)
2) Its not deep enough to justify not going to work (can't say I can't get off the road cos of the snow)
3) And the big one...... there are people out there, who struggle to drive when its raining. When its snows, these people reak havoc
Lets have a Blizzard.... a proper one.....
Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow. PLEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAASSSSSSSE.

I want snow too! I have my yellow wellies, woolly bonnet and warm jumper and I am all ready to start a snow ball fight and play big foot in the new snow and catch snowflakes on my tongue ..... and all I get to do is puddle splash.
Worst still, I live in Killamarsh and when every body else has a decent amount of snow, there is b-all down here!
Did my post never work? Or has it been removed? Did I imagine posting it, did anyone see it?
My post is back.
What's going on? Maybe the cold has addled my brain.
Okay, now i'm really confused, it's gone again!
tropical whatnow?
is that just before the arctic ice melting stalls the gulf stream and we plunge back into a mini ice age? There'll be plenty of snow for us then, and glaciers and stuff like that. That's for those of us who live on hills anyway, the rest will be underwater first.
Here's what to do if it snows in sheffield. A prize offered for the largest one built.

Ah, thank god its not just me who loves snow, as soon as I mention how much I would like it to snow, I get a look of complete and utter disgust.
I dont even mind trudging through the snow to get to and from home and work, its all part of the fun :)
Bring it on I say the sooner the Bl***y better
Another lover of snow here! If it's snowing properly I love it, especially when it's the big flake sort, I could sit and watch it fall for hours. Got to agree with what's been said so far, if it's just a couple of inches which quickly turn to ice I'm not so bothered.
I love snow, especially in January (birthday time) or February! Only time to UK looks clean and tidy!
Watching the weather forecast on BBC EMT earlier tonight mentioned there could be a "winter shower, even snow" over higher ground on the Peak District tonight.
Fingers crossed!

JayneRay 16-01-2007, 07:38 I would love it snow like it used to when I was a child. I am sure my children have never experienced the fun I had sledging snowballing building snowmen.

Lindseyw 16-01-2007, 09:38 So there isn't snow on the way then ? Gutted !
Alemonster 16-01-2007, 09:39 I miss the snow as well. Ideally I'd love for it to really heavily snow overnight during the week so that Mrs Alemonster and I couldn't travel to work. I hate it when it snows in the afternoon, because as soon as a snowflake drops on a road, traffic grinds to a halt.
Incidentally, I collect British comics from the 1970s and it's interesting to see in the January editions just how many of the characters have adventures in the snow.

BasilRathbon 16-01-2007, 10:08 Anything above 4 or 5 snowflakes and the trains will stop
Au contraire - that's just a perception. When I used to work for rail enquiries, as soon as there were a couple of snowflakes, you'd get a succession of hysterical people ringing up asking if the trains were all cancelled. In actual fact the trains carried on running through the worst blizzards, long after the buses had given up.

these things only happen because the british have an amazing ability to forget how to drive when it snows, and at the same time the council are incapable of seeing weather forecasts and gritting apropriately.
Heating bills should actually be lower since snow is a good insulator, and I can't really see why it would cause any damage.
I just spent a week in the alps and all the roads were open, the businesses were open, people managed to get around without injury and there was plenty of sport to be had.
Honeybun 16-01-2007, 20:15 I love snow too, but sadly here in Retford it's a poor effort when we do get it. Someone said it was because we are surrounded by power stations but I can't see it somehow. My little lad keeps asking me every day if it's going to snow today, but all we seem to get is drizzle and loads of fog and wind (that's the weather type of wind just incase anyone was wondering, lol).
it was my birthday yesterday and i wish it could of snowed

I don't think it's selfish at all. Snow / ice is not a problem as long as you are prepared for it and make plans. Of course modern life can't cope with it because we seem to still want to carry on as normal no matter what happens. Personally I take the opportunity when snow arrives just to relax and enjoy it, my busy life can be put on hold for a day or so.

Only selfish people who don't need to go anywhere like snow
I live on the outskirts of Sheffield where the snow usually lasts longer than anywhere else. I have 2 jobs, one of which involves working outside. I have a child to collect from school and a husband to collect from the railway station most nights. And I love snow.......
Escafeldia 19-01-2007, 13:33 Some of you lot really make me smile. Those of you who want snow don't really know much about it. Someone said they wanted 12 ft drifts with cars covered and traffic disrupted for days or even weeks. Well - I really hope you get it. In Sheffield we only need about 2 inches of the stuff to cause more traffic disruption than you can shake a stick at. Cars all driving at about 5mph when the snow is clearing the treads and a steady 20 mph would be fine. I dread to think what you would do if you got even 1 foot of snow never mind 12 feet of the stuff. :help: :help:
Just for those who want lots of the white stuff let me just put forward a scenario for you and then come back and tell me you really want a good blizzard or two. Imagine it is Thursday and you are at work. It has been frosty for several days and the ground is well and truly seasoned. Just after midday it begins to snow. Not the big 50p sized flakes but the finer stuff. The wind begins to pick up and by 14:30 the snow is beginning to drift and there is around three inches or so lying. Your boss tell you to go home around 16:00 by which time the snow is 6 inches deep and drifting. The buses in town are struggling to make the hills and the gritters are having trouble making their way round because of cars blocking roundabouts. The police are by now off the roads because they can't get around either. You set off in your car and when you hit the main road you find that the traffic is moving very slowly and cars are skidding all over the place. The first roundabout you get to finds the entrance and exits blocked by cars and you have to leave your car by the side of the road and start walking. By now it is 17:30, the snow is beginning to come down with a strengthening wind and the drifting is getting worse. You now have 6 miles to walk to get home, half of which is uphill before you get to the last two mile stretch. You begin walking, no buses are in evidence and the wind is blowing in your face. Your coat is now wet and the snow is getting in your eyes making it difficult to see where you are going. By 20:00 you are nearly home and the snow is now 10 inches deep. You finally make it home by 21:00 and either have to get your evening meal ready or your wife/partner has managed to do it for you. The following morning finds the snow 2 feet deep with drifts up to 6 feet high. No buses are running in your area and you have to decide whether you are going to leave your car miles away in the street, walk to work and then retrieve your car or walk to work and get the car later in the day.
That would make you think twice about the joys of snow. What I have described I have done and not only once in my working life. So -- bring on the snow and much good may it do you. :hihi: :hihi:

We have had a foot of snow in Sheffield at least twice in the time I've lived here. More than once it's taken me 2 hours to drive from the university to Crookes where I lived, picking my way through abandoned vehicles slewed across the road. And my boyfriend had to abandon his car on the far side of the town centre and walk from there to Crookes, perhaps not 6 miles but a damn long way and a significant proportion of it uphill. And we lived! And we still love the stuff. Isn't it funny how you folks always know better than us?!
Sorry, maybe i'm sad. I LOOOOVE snow! Never saw it in South Africa. A decent fall is so rare what's the point in complaining?!

In 1977 I had to walk home from work from Fulwood to Stocksbridge.
In 1978 / 79 it snowed for a week solid - still got in to work every day.
We haven't had a "proper" snowfall (ie. snow on the ground for more than a couple of days) in Sheffield since 1991.
satman2222 20-01-2007, 08:25 In 1977 I had to walk home from work from Fulwood to Stocksbridge.

We had some deep snow about 1993/4 as I once had to walk from Chapeltown to High Green at 5 in the morning dodging the low telephone wires to put the Telephone Exchange back on the air as I was the nearest !
UnfortunateR 20-01-2007, 08:51 Yay! Snow.. doubt it will come tho. When has the weather guys actly been right?

I remember that, and having to walk up bocking lane to Bradway as the car got stuck. Didn't we also have a really hot summer either before or after that?

I am a weather predictor, and looking at today's forecast I'd say there's snow in them there clouds, but it might take another 34 - 43 hours before it actually reaches the correct temperature to allow it to fall to ground.
So, UnfortunateR, please don't doubt us "weather guys" - give us a chance, we're not all Michael Fish you know??
Lindseyw 20-01-2007, 14:04 I'm convinced it's going to snow today - sky looks like it's coming

Sounds about right, - snow possibly down to low level is likely from the occlusion travelling south on Sunday night. Predicted temp drop is 5 deg C.

Is anyone in the world as good looking as me?
Sorry, but I'm feeling ultra-pedantic at the moment - the expression you were looking for was damp squib, not squid.
