I've got a Penny Whistle in D but it sounds awful, i think i'm either awful at playing it or its broken.

Sorry I took so long to reply, I'd love to buy a Low D, but it's a jungle..Last time I was in Sheffield I planned to go up to Rock St. and have a look at those, but never made it.

What would you recommend?

I think I might be one of 3 whistlers here in Denmark, and I'm fed up of explaining what a tinwhistle is, despite the fact that the Danish seem to love Irish Music.

I once totally emptied a so-called Irish pub here, because my partner wanted to change the style of music to pure Irish..

So we dropped all the 'juke box stuff' and went with a completely new programme.

After 40 minutes there were 2 left in the pub. So we reverted back to the old stuff and the people came back in...Never again.

Now I have a new partner who plays mandolin, banjo, and fiddle, and we play great....

I've been playing whistle for 9 years in different bands and ceilidh bands etc, but my fingers are too small for a low D(!) although i do have an unkeyed irish flute.

Best make to get at a reasonable price without a doubt a Susato (choose between Dublin and Kildare models - untunable/tunable)

If you want to go somewhere with a good range and knowledge, go to The Music Room in Cleckheaton (West Yorkshire), Hobgoblin in Leeds (just behind the Corn Exchange), or the branches of both of these shops in Nottingham.

If you've got cash to splash then Overton whistles are around £100, and the gorgeous wooden Sweetheart whistles (imported from America) range from about £70 to £120.

But overall, don't get a nasty squeaky 'tin' whistle, of the £3 kind (generation, feadog, guiness, sweetone...), spend £18 on a Susato. Definitely!!!

Oops but it turns out you're in Denmark (have you heard of Haugaard and Hoirup?). Mail order from here:

Or here's Susato: http://www.hobgoblin.com/local/whistleframeuk.htm

Thanks for the information.

I would love to buy an Overton, or a few overtons, but the pockets are'nt so deep!

I wonder if you know Chiff and Fipple, the website for whistlers?

As for me, I play a very old Clarkes C, a couple of newer Clarkes in D,(all of which I love), and the rest of my collection is Generations which I've 'tweaked' to try to get a better sound.

I've also got a Feadog which is a piece of s**t. I can't do anything with it at all.

Have you also seen the site called 'Mick's Virtual Whistle?' It's great.

ok, dont wanna annoy rosie here. If your a really good player get a susato but if your a beginner (not saying any of you are as I dont know) then please don't get a susato. they are very loud whistles, they are fantastic and have a wonderful sound but they are loud. I have been to so many sessions with people playing susatos who think they are good and you cant hear anyone else lol. I agree though with the guiness type whistles, bloody awful but great for a beginner as they arent too loud and brash but you can just sorta sit and learn the tunes!
