I know of a cat who has been abandoned by a family who have up sticks and moved house he is being fed by people living nearby, and I believe he is quite sheltered at night, I'm thinking of taking him in, but he's reluctant to come with me once I'm out of his area, would he eventually settle, or has he been too independant for too long, he's been living outside about 6 months. he's really friendly and lets me pick him up. from what Ive been told he is between 18/24 months old.

Yes definitely try and get him to come and live with you it will be the best thing for him. May take a while for him to settle but will be worth it for both of you. It really annoys me when people abandon cats. Good luck

thanks honeysuckle, I haven't given up on him yet he's a lovely cat, I also cannot understand how people can do that.

I've just moved this to the pets group, where the thread will be at home amongst like-minded threads.

I think there's every chance that this little one would be fine moved to your house, but what I'd advise you to do is to go to him in his territory, pick him up and put him in a basket, then take him inside your house and keep him in for a couple of months to show him that your house is his territory now.

During that time when you've both got to love each other, you can have him checked over by a vet and neutered etc, and then when you let him out he's far less likely to wander back to his old ground.

I wish you luck, and hope that you and he fall in love.

yes you should! :) I fed a cat ( marvin) and he used to come here days on end and I fed him .. then he goes to my neighbour. He is a local celeb. I have spoken to his owner on occasions ( she reported him missing ) he lived in a shed for 6 years and has been made homeless twice( he is now 15) he has had a crap life and THEN at that age he has the nomad life.. You should take him..So you will have no prob. I cant believe the cruelty of some people who just leave pets behind

If I told you how many stories like this we hear at the Shelter it would break your heart.

The number of people who genuinely don't think about their animals is astonishing. Sometimes it's easier not to know the scale of the problem, cos it's impossible to help them all and you'll drive yourself mad trying. Better to help each animal as an individual.

well said! Its awful isnt it. It breaks my heart. If you read my message ( hank) is due to Marvin and D.K. was my bunny. Its unbelievable how people can be so cruel and thoughtless.

Do you have the old owners address, cos if he is chipped his chip will need changing? Your vet can scan him for you to find out or depending where you are, you can use my scanner to check if he has a chip. If he has been abandoned then the chip company may take pity and change it over to you without the prev owners consent, providing you can verify they have upped sticks.

Good luck with taking him in but you will have to get the other neighbours to stop feeding him once you have him.

bless you for giving him a home if thats what you decide to do x

I got my boy cat after neighbours had abandoned him. He just moved into our house through the catflap! After trying to get him to move back out for a day or so he went on areal charm offensive, purring and snuggling up, so we put a collar on him and he was ours! Sadly he died last year, but he was one of the most lovable cats I've ever known.

As others have said, if you are feeding him but he still wont move in then he probably on a cushy number elsewhere.

The cat involved has been living outside for a few months. There was another cat but unfortunately he was found dead about 2 weeks ago. The cats had been abandoned at different times but had been fed by another resident in the flats who we were sad to hear died suddenly just before christmas. Mum tried to bring Harry (as he was named by the man who was feeding him) home yesterday, but she didn't have a pet carrier and he started to panic when she got further away from the flats, so she had to let him go. She is planning to go back with a pet carrier to bring him home. He is a lovely cat and it's such a shame, he will make a lovely pet as he likes being cuddled and doesn't mind the dogs. At the moment he his sleeping in someones car port which is sheltered and an old lady is putting food outside for him but doesn't want to adopt him.

Before everyone blames the owner please remember some people don't realise how much care needs to be taken when introducing cats to new homes and it is quite possible that the cat made it's own way 'home'.

I know at least one cat that definitely did this, but it's probable but this cat was just left. It happens all too often.

The chip company won't change the chip without the owner's consent, however, they won't stop you keeping the cat either. When a dalmatian was stolen and sold on, the new owners asked the chip company to change the details, the chip company contacted the real owner and the owner refused for the chip to be changed, but the dog was never returned to her and no help was given to her.

Thankyou Medusa, his first night seems to have gone well, what food would you recommend, I have been feeding him dry food as opposed to the tins, etc. I have been told it is better for animals do you agree.

I suppose in a way he adopted me because he came running up to me as I was taking my dog a walk, he's a friendly cat anyway, so I suppose he was like that with everybody, which I felt made him more vunerable.

In the case you've quoted Lotti, the chip company would refuse to change ownership but when dealing with an "abandoned animal", they do exercise some discretion. If the cat in question is chipped and it can proved that it has been abandoned (plenty of witnesses in this case), then the chip company would indeed alter their records. I've known this happen several times, in extreme circumstances of course. It isn't done lightly!

Hi every one, well unfortunately Harry has decided he doesn't want to stay with me, I let him out yesterday in the garden to let him get familiar with the suroundings, he was quite happily coming in and out of the house for awhile, then when I brought him back in he wouldn't settle, I let him out and he hasn't been back. I'm presuming he has been outside too long to be housed now, but I am concerned about him. I probably live to near his own familiar surroundings. well at least I tried. If he does come back I will let you know.

You do need to keep Harry inside for around a month for him to feel your house is home, i am sure Harry would want to stay living in a cosy warm place with food and love on tap, it has to be better than sleeping under a hedge in this bad weather, its just that your home and garden is not his usual territory and he may feel worried outside and go back to where he feels safe.
Please go find him don't give up on him this soon, lots of stray cats come to a sticky end.
You could try buttering his paws many people swear by this, i don't know how scientific it is but can't hurt either :hihi:

Here's Harry. Mum has been trying to coax him through the fence and he has been a few times but hasn't stayed. She managed to take him to the vets today to have a health check and he is fine. He will go back on Friday for the 'big op!' I think he's slowly coming round to the fact that it's much nicer to spend the night in a nice centrally heated house, than in someones cold car port. He is such a lovely cat and can't get enough cuddles!

Harry is really gorgeous, i am so glad you have persevered with him, kept hoping for an update, sounds like your getting somewhere now, and the op will help to settle him down.... he won't feel the need to be off looking for the ladies anymore then :hihi:

Ooops- sorry it's taken me so long to see this post!

If you can feed a good quality dry food that he likes, then lots of vets agree that this is nutritionally as good as canned food whilst being better for their teeth- but this depends on finding one that they really like. Some cats just prefer wet food.

My lot live on an entirely dry food diet, but they're pretty easy going on the food front- in your situation I'd get your lad inside the house and not let him out again for at least a month (preferably two) and include lots of little treats of things like pilchards in tomato sauce and tuna- just to help make his mind up that yours really is the best place to be.

Well it looks like Harry has decided to stay with us, He went out this morning after I fed him, it is difficult to keep him in as been advised, he's come back of his own accord this teatime,so it seems he prefers to be nice and warm after all.

A quick update on Harry. He had his operation of Friday, but still wasn't keen to stay inside too long. He has had to be brought back to get some food and wants to go again when he has had it. I think he prefers to be outside which is not a bad thing, but we don't like the idea of him being out when it's forecast a really cold night. Anyway, he is in tonight. He's had his tea and has settled down in the dogs bed!

Harry is such a gorgeous cat, I am glad he has decided to stay. One of my previous cats was also abandoned but she took matters into her own hands and appeared on my bed in the middle of the night. Frightened the living daylights out of me, I can tell you!

Harry is well and truly mums cat now! He looks like he belongs with his black collar. Mums on a well deserved holiday now, and as I live nearby, I am looking after him. He stays in at night, and goes out in the morning after he has been fed. He spotted me walking with the dogs on sunday and decided he would walk with us :D I had to eventually abandon the walk and bring him home as I was afraid he would get lost or we would encounter other dogs. He's such a cutie
