Don't think i'll be going back there soon goldenfleece 24-09-2004, 07:42 One of the clubs I will not miss at all in any way would be the Leadmill..... officegirl 24-09-2004, 09:55 thing is it did use to be great different stuff on everynight with such a diverse mix of people in every night, but for some reason the powers that bee have made every night the same. what happenend to la videotec, beat club, and rise???? why are bands coming off stage at 11pm on a saturday when they use to stay on till at least 12 not everyone wants to go to a ''cheesey night ''every night and its full of chavs and townies. what happenend to the indie kids of 1994-1999?? it was always music factory ''step on'' or city hall ''drop'' on a friday then joyrider on a saturady at leadmill with a great mix of people and music with no troble occuring ever well maybe a little scuffle Martin_s 24-09-2004, 12:09 Deja vu time... http://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/showthread.php?s=&threadid=14197 goldenfleece 24-09-2004, 14:15 what happenend to la videotec, beat club, and rise???? So I for one would love to see the stuck up ******** who run the club go bankrupt and close down and give someone else a chance to run a new decent club somewwhere ... Vanbast 25-09-2004, 11:47 Does anybody remember The Steamer from the mid to late eighties? A strange fusion of Hip Hop and House music on a Wednesday that worked surprisingly well. Two big, very loud speaker stacks, 4 coloured bulbs for lighting effects, a small bar through a hatch (got converted to the cloakroom eventually), toilets filled with cement and drug dealers, condensation dripping from the ceiling. Absolutely marvelous, it's all been a bit downhill from there... BigTone 25-09-2004, 12:35 If you think about it there isn't really a decent club in Sheffield and there no variety what so ever WallBuilder 25-09-2004, 19:00 I used to be a regular on Thursday nights the 60's and 70's night, would spend the majority of the time on the dance floor which probably explains my then slim figure. What a shame if that's all changed, it was incredibly popular and had no dress code to worry about and the ages ranged from 18 or so up to an old guy who must of been in his sixties, crepe shoes and bootlace tie, watching him gyrate with a younger woman put us youngsters to shame. . Darren 27-09-2004, 16:02 and in you are in your twenties and having the time of your life. I've never known The Leadmill more poppular than it currently is. The reason that these nights were changed is that the customer base got older stopped coming going due to 'settling down' etc Things have to move on and nothing stands still in the clubbing world. Ahh to be 18 and cute again....................... Damon 27-09-2004, 16:29 Originally posted by Vanbast Does anybody remember The Steamer from the mid to late eighties? The Steamer was one of Sheffield's best ever club nights IMO - as well as local lads Parrot and Winston, the other resident was Graeme Park, possibly even before he was helping to make history at the Hacienda. It was a variant on the Jive Turkey formula in the scuzzier environs of the Leadmill as opposed to the dressy grandeur of the City Hall Ballroom. Hip hop and house often seemed to be played alongside each other in the mid-eighties - 'Hip Hop, House and Rare Groove' was seen on many a flyer in 1987. It's a shame this open-minded trend died a bit of a death. I have an issue of The Face from 1988 in which The Steamer is listed amongst the top 50 club nights in the world. And of course, if we're talking about The Steamer, we must have a few of these: :) :) :) :) :) :) :) (That's about 150 quid's worth at mid-eighties prices!!) Ricardo 02-10-2004, 15:50 I'm 22 and have this summer had some of the best nights out at the Leadmill. I think how drunk I've been might have had something to do with it, and I'm certainly getting to an age where I reminisce, but Darren's right, things change. As for the indie scene of the late 90s, well, its still sort of there, its just jammed into the smaller room on a Monday night. The only way to have any breathing room in there is to be so steamingly intoxicated that no one wants to go near you, an art, I must modestly admit, I have mastered. lidz 02-10-2004, 20:09 Until last August I hadn't visited the Leadmill for six years, all of you moaning gets need to learn to appreciate what is on your doorstep. The Leadmill may have dubbed down slightly but there is still nothing in the South of England to compare to it. Plus if you are ****** who gives a sh*t. My grandmother always taught me if you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all. Mishmail 06-10-2004, 11:54 the leadmill rocks!!!!! I've been going for 10 years and think that although it's not as good as it was (keep thinking it was because I was getting older!) it's still great and yet to have a bad night there! (would like cheesy nights bringing back though!!!) andwal 06-10-2004, 11:58 Got to agree - for all its faults - the Leadmill is still a good night out, barely ever any trouble - drinks are a good price, and although I've seen it change over the past 8 years, at its heart it is still the same as its always been. - a decent cheap night out in sheffield! jazz 06-10-2004, 15:12 good club but the doorstaff are t**ts. miggy 18-10-2004, 10:01 About the lovely doorstaff/bouncers... The Leadmill is the best place in sheffield. Well its a dive but that the whole point, and I've got my indie fix there for years. So why did a bouncer tell us off 3 times for putting our feet on the plastic stools in the little bar? They aren't clean anyway and were covered in beer. If they're worried about cleanliness then sort the bloody toilets out. The 3rd time he threatened to throw us out, which made me just want to do it more. Scott76 10-01-2005, 21:23 Has the leadmill gone down hill down or am i just getting old(28), for the last 5/6 years it seems to have got worse & worse & caters only for students who want to get hammered on cheap drinks & listen to the same music the would hear in kingdom. With the exception of the Indie Night on the Saturday it's a shadow of it's former self robbie 10-01-2005, 22:23 search the forums and you'll find that yes it has:) commie pig 11-01-2005, 17:23 there was a brief time when between the leadmill, octagon and boardwalk, sheffield was getting as many good gigs as Leeds. Doesn't seem to be happening anymore - tho the Leadmill is only part of that problem, indeed its probably holding its end up rather better than the other two venues (cant think of one gig i went to at the boardwalk last year off hand). Still, they've got the walking god that is Julian Cope playing in a couple of weeks, so I'm happy :) jazz 12-01-2005, 12:23 In terms of club nights the leadmill has gone down hill, for me the doormen are the main problem. In terms of gigs it still does quite well but i think the main problem with sheffield is it needs a venue bigger than leadmill but smaller than city hall, something like the carling academies in glasgow and manchester. MuteWitness 12-01-2005, 12:31 what music is it on a wednesday night? nick2 12-01-2005, 12:32 I stopped going to the Leadmill when I got turned away for wearing trainers one night. jake 12-01-2005, 14:15 Originally posted by jazz In terms of club nights the leadmill has gone down hill, for me the doormen are the main problem. What - like the Octagon? carcrash 12-01-2005, 14:23 I really like the octagon but they need to sort the bar out jazz 12-01-2005, 15:11 Originally posted by jake What - like the Octagon? The octagon just doesn't seem to attract as many bands anymore, the sound is not very good and its just not a very nice venue. Sheffield needs a carling academy with more clout to brings the bands to the city scottf 12-01-2005, 16:06 surely the question should be- "can the leadmill get anymore dwnhill??" leddi 12-01-2005, 21:14 the only night i used to go to religiously is rise when i was about 16, amazing up to the minute DJ's used to er dj there. it still has good gigs though but i agree the club nights are rubbish now, they used to do a good R&B night on a thurs but that seems to have gone now. oh dear i think i am actually too old.
