View Full Version : Next Q! Which dog food do I buy??... So many to choose from?!
Hi,
Been to Pets at Home tonight for a wander round for doggie stuff...
There are so many dog foods? dry? wet? both? brand? cheap? expensive? :suspect:
anyone got any good reccomendations? pets at home reccomended there own dry range (but then they would!)
I've heard stuff recently about food with lots of colourings making dogs hyper, such as Bakers complete...
i'm confused
I presume its different to buying for cats, i just get them whats on offer but dogs need to be on the same food, that right?
any advice appreciated!
carpetviper 10-01-2007, 20:33 We use bakers complete with moist meaty peices it will come in a puppy version with smaller peices
I go to Jollyes at Meadowhall Retail Park - much better service than at Pets At Home. We use Jollyes own brand which is natural and apparently has no additives. It seems to be ok so far!
KATIEB_23 10-01-2007, 21:10 Lots of people find that their dogs like certain brands more than others. I've been through lots of different brands of 'complete' dry food but the only one Gadget will eat without being mixed with 'human food' is Wagg - which handily is the cheapest of the lot! Yay! A 17kg cost about £6.99 (which lasts him about 2mths)
I choose Burns for my two, but that's because being dalmatians they need low protein diets and have sensitive tummies. Burns is designed by a vet from his own homemade dog food diet.
The best diet a dog can have is on homemade food - if you know what you're doing - because you know what's in it.
I like James Wellbeloved too as it is hypoallergenic, but both that and Burns are costly.
I prefer dry food as it is better for their teeth and you can entice them to eat by putting oily fish on, good for their coat, or gravy or even water which, mixed with biscuits makes a slight gravy.
Eddy came to us after 12 years of wagg biscuits mixed with butchers meat. His teeth were a state and he has to have his food softened, but then he is 12 so you can forgive him for that.
Takara always has dry biscuits unless there's something that is too old for us to eat but ok for the dogs or gravy left from dinner then I mix it in.
You'll get all sorts of different suggestions but if you really want the best type for your dog, you can try joining one of the cavalier forums - that is a cavalier in the pic, right? And ask what is best for cavs themselves. I wouldn't feed my dalmatians the same food as certain other breeds have because they all have different needs really.
Good luck.
Oh - and if you are changing the food from what the dog has been on previously do it gradually by introducing the new food to the food it's been on before a little at a time over the period of a week - it just avoids upset tummies.

We also use their own. Daisy is very happy, and content. Toilet business is in good order too! ;)

WallBuilder 10-01-2007, 23:36 I get max's food by the sack. He gets some Omega mixed with some hound biscuit and then just to make it interesting I always add a bit of chicken or ham, he's not fussy and will quite happily eat the processed sliced stuff.
Now I've found something he likes I buy it in bulk as it works out cheaper but make sure your dog really likes whatever you get before buying in huge amounts.
Mine is delivered by the pet shop at Woodseats.

my 2 are on asdas own which i think was £10.99 for 15kg. Its like bakers but its is not moist, i have fresh veg every night so cook extra for dogs and mix it in!.
KatieB, this wagg stuff does it look tasty for dogs or does ot look like cardboard? i cannot find a small bag of it anywhere for them to try. I have had someone else reccommend it too me so want to see how they react!

Wagg looks a a lot like Bakers but without the green pieces (which Gadget used to leave behind :loopy: ) Its quite small pieces.
Maybe at £7 for a large bag you could try it and its no great loss if they don't like it?

i will give it a go, thanks for the info!
Yellowrose 11-01-2007, 12:07 Try and get him/her onto the dried stuff as it is so much easier. But bear in mind if youre buying it in bulk, is it easy to get if you run out? i.e. not from a special shop that you have to drive across town to get to.
When I chose a dried food for our cats it was important to me to get them one they actually liked and ate up, but also one which was easy to stock up on - some of the specialist ones arent that readily available and you have to be very organised.
Mel77, If animal welfare is important to you, bare in mind that alot of pet food manafacturers are involved in animal testing, James Wellbeloved is the one that springs to mind as our dog was on their puppy food until I found this out.
As you're getting a rescue dog, it would be wise to find out what food she's already on, and get a supply of this in, then change her over gradually(say over two weeks or so) if you decide to change her diet.
My preference for The Chocador is a dry food, it's very convenient, and easy to buy in bulk, and the Chocador seems happy with the choice (judging by the drool hanging from his chops when he's waiting to be fed and the speed with which it disapears :hihi:).
Yellowrose 11-01-2007, 14:20 Good point scoop. Didnt know about JW and animal testing, glad our cats gave their food the thumbs down!
I am a Burns fan my three have been on it for four years now and I have never looked back. I do add a small amount of warm water before feeding though. Burns also dont test:thumbsup:
slimsid2000 11-01-2007, 14:35 Mel - is that your new dog in your avatar or just a picture of a King Charles Spaniel from the internet?

Yeah she's on WAGG at the moment so was going to continue with this for a couple of weeks and then gradually indroduce something else if i decided to.
Saying that i can't find WAGG anywhere??? :help:
Personally i'd go for Tesco or Morrisons own brand but then i hear comments that its as good as the price you pay and cheap food will cause future health problems!? But we all know own brands are made by the big brand companies anyway?!?;)
I've not heard a bad review about WAGG so i'll prabably keep her on this and its cheaper too! :)
Hmmmmm desisions, desisions....:?

Eddy was on Wagg when we got him and personally, I think it made him reek...
I think it depends on the dog - I love mine being on Burns and they love it - Takara's a picky eater and loves Burns - plus, they make it in different flavours so it keeps it varied.
Also - bear in mind, some of the animal testing isn't simply 'animal testing' it's employees taking home samples of the food and seeing if their pets will eat it ;) I stopped feeding JW believing they tested on animals but I'm not sure if it's just taste trials they use animals for.

Sorry Lotti, I should clarify, I was referring to pet food companies who are involved in horrific experimentation on animals - the manafacturers of James Wellbeloved are one such company. Information can be found here:

This is definatly not 'taste testing'.
KATIEB_23 11-01-2007, 17:35 You can get Wagg at Pets at home, and its even cheaper at Costco (if you're a member) I think I saw a 20kg bag there for £5+VAT the day after I bought a massive sack @ PAH
This is my new doggie :D still undecided on names though!

Whats her current name? She looks lovely!
She's currently called Kaylin as it's welsh for holly (apparently) as she was found wandering at Xmas and curled up in some holly....:(
I'm thinking Holly, Lilly, Molly, Jemima, Kizzy.....
Anyone got any ideas?! :help:

Mine's called Lilly and she seems to like it! I love Molly though but personally I would go for Holly because that is kind of her name already.

Ahh, she's georgous  .
I have always liked King Charles Spaniels. They seem to have such nice trusing faces and have a pleasant temperament. Personally I don't like aggressive dogs and think a dog shoud make a pleasant companion.

'Muffin' perhaps?
I used to know a King Charles called that.
