A friend is having problems with a laptop, she sought advice and it seems she needs an XP disc. I have one but dont have the Authorisation code it came with, do you think it will be needed?

She should use her own code.
Should have said - she doesnt have a disc at all, she bought it second hand.
Does that mean my XP disc would be no use?
has it got xp on now.....? if not then she will need a new code.
depends on why she needs the disk - it is to install a component or repair the installation or is it to re-install?
If it is to reinstall you'll need the license key (usually on a sticker on the laptop base) the you'll have to authorise it. Otherwise if you just need to install a component then you don't need to authorise it.
Thanks for those replies - Ill check....

as long as the machine has a COA sticker with a valid license on it then all she needs is the media which I believe she is allowed to make a copy of as without a license it's a coffee mat
the problem comes with which media she needs
original XP licenses need XP media, XP SP1 licenses need XP SP1 media and XP SP2 licenses need XP SP2 media i.e they don't work with the wrong media
you've also got the problem of is it XP home or XP pro
the licenses all look much the same and the only ways to tell what you need is to either install each in turn and try them or remember what was on the machine when it was purchased from the shop originally

plus before you wipe it (if its still running) use xp code finder to find her key and make a note of it incase you havent got the sticker on the machine
you can download a key reader directly from here http://www.petri.co.il/quickly_retrieve_windows_cd_key.htm
mods please remove this link if not allowed- but it all looks legal stuff to me
