Dyson House!! :gag: :gag: Someone please tell me it's going to be demolished! I drove past it today and felt ashamed that such a disgusting building is still standing in the heart of our city.

What will all the new students and tourists be thinking as they step out of the train station and see that!
Not a good advert for Sheff at all - get rid!

I agree that it is ugly, but drive on another hundred metres towards Granville Square and the dilapidated buildings just before the Funeral Parlour get my vote as the biggest eyesore. The could convert them into more student flats as well.

The Brown building nearest the multi-storey and Spar.

Sheaf House is the blue one that doesn't look finished at the top :D

Dyson House used to belong to Sheffield Hallam University, it was just as much a dump inside too, very narrow and cramped corridors.

Standard British Rail 60's HeadQuarters building style ;)
The same exists in Plymouth, and probably elsewhere that I don't know off.

There's been scaffolding on the building for at least the last year, is it THAT unsafe!?!?!

I think the biggest eyesore in Sheffield is on the side of the hill out towards Pitsmoor somewhere - you can see it from the Parkway and the Wicker.

It is about four storeys high, and has most of its walls missing. And it seems to have been like that for years.

Any idea what it is - and if it ever going to be demolished?

ISTR that Sheaf House is constructed of HAC, so it needs to come down anyway.

WH Smith have their Sheffield distribution centre there for all the newsagents.

One of the principle problems with any plans to redevelop Dyson House is that most of the car park behind it belongs to Railtrack, meaning that you have to pass over someone else's land to get in. Impossible (virtually) to develop without Railtrack really.

Mr H - I think that used to be Wigfalls head office - will stand corrected though.

Dyson House is truly gross but I can't believe no one's mentioned West Bar police station:gag: -can't wait to see that go!

I can imagine any future plans to redevelop the area very difficult if one tries to contact Railtrack ;):loopy:

I know, but I have no idea which 'agency' has taken over the building. However, Railtrack owned it when Premisys (now defunct) were talking about developing it for residential.

Oh purleeeez not more student flats ...

What sheffield needs is more private flats for young working people who actually spend money in the city ...

Driving past Dyson House today, I noticed a metal frame being attached to it. Some time ago, a planning application was approved to cover the front of Dyson House with a large hoarding - fingers crossed that's what the frame is for.

A temporary solution is better than no solution I suppose!

The Old Hole In The Wall pub and the huge 10-storey warehouse immediately adjacent, Saville [sic] House, on Savile Street need to go!

Worst building of all? The substation (I believe it's that) right next to the Moore Street roundabout. UGLY.

I believe the building is being 'wrapped' with a giant poster about the work being carried out around the area, which will stay until the building is demolished next year.

The hoarding is going up at the moment.

As predicted its an image of how Sheaf Square is going to look and advertising the fact that English Partnerships have acquired the site.

The side of the building facing the Showroom should be covered in the next half an hour.

This will all be coming down shortly as will most of the buildings as there is a new ring road going strait through the middle of it all. In a line accross all the land has been baught out compulsary purchase.

I've just walked past Dyson House and they're still putting it up, should be done by dark tonight.

Looks much nicer than the filthy building underneath it, O just wish they would do one for Sheaf House as well - or are they going ahead with the planned demolition of it in the new year?

Eagle_20
08-11-2004, 14:41
They had to end up shuffling across the top ledge pulling the hoarding across to get it central. Not a job I'd like to do.

They are just tying up the edge now and then it seems it will be finished - just before it gets dark.

You may be thinking of the office block that used to be Wigfalls headquarters - mostly a scruffy concrete frame and a few walls.

Channel 4 Television is making a programme looking at buildings that people can't wait to see demolished.
It sounds as if Dyson House provokes some pretty strong feelings and we'd be interested in hearing from anyone who either loves it or hates it.

Hmmmmmmmmm glad someone else takes notice.
Coming out of the CO-OP side door near Castle Market take a look up above the sandwich shop and the chip shop across the road, you will be amazed at what you see flying in and out of the windows. These are food premises, I agree what will people think of Sheffield :loopy:

If you were looking at Sheffield, you could pick any one of 20 or so buildings for the wrecking ball (would be better to be able to pick the lot) - Candidates must be Sheaf House, Dyson House, Park Hill Flats (despite their Grade II listing), Roxy, Odeon, Scargills Castle, half the Moor, Grosvenor House Hotel (ugh), Castle Market.

Skello I couldn't agree more. That chippy/sarnie shop is a total health hazzard! The run down open windows above, pigeons and goodness knows what else flying in and out... put it this way I would NEVER buy food from the shops below. God knows what lerks above those shops. Utterly disgusting.

I'm writing from Channel 4 television. We are working on a series at the moment called 'Demolition'. We would really like to find out what people feel about Dyson and Sheaf House. Do you love them or hate them? Would you like to 'press the plunger'? Do they give a good impression of Sheffield?
We'd love to hear from you. Please contact me on emily.benson@oftv.co.uk or 0207 483 8822.
Many thanks

The DfES Building at Moorfoot in Sheffield is the biggest eyesore in Yorkshire.

I witnessed the old 'Eggbox 'go up and come down and now I can't wait for this wretched carbunkle to come down either.

Does anyone remember the days when you could walk from London Road up the the top of the Moor?

1 St Paul's Parade. Another step forward for the city that involves 2 steps backwards.

this is what english partnerships say about dyson and sheaf house:

6. Sheaf House comprises 77,000 sq feet with a total site area of just under an acre. It is presently partly tenanted but it is hoped that vacant possession will be secured within the next 12 months. A private sector partner will be selected to develop the site.

7. Dyson House offers 53,000 sq feet with a site area of 0.5 of an acre. Formerly owned by Westminster Land plc, the property is vacant. It is likely to be refurbished to provide good quality, high connectivity office space. A private sector development partner will be selected.

Great! Sheffield is the place to be. They knock the old ugly crap down then replace it with more & more twice as ugly new crap. E.g. 31 storey block, St Pauls place, nice name shame about the face or what? MacDonalds hotel. The new crap at the station replacing the the old crap. Vast swathe of ''flat pack'' student accomodation off St Marys gate & er, the list is endless it goes on & on. How depressing.

I was in the Peace Gardens yesterday and in all honesty, it was beautiful. Flowers in an array of colours, green, mowed lawns looking nice and tidy, and the kids encroaching on the fountains and generally enjoying the sunshine.

To the left, the superb Town Hall, to the right the nicely renovated buildings where Ha! Ha! is plying its trade, accommodation overhead, life in the city. The new hotel with the scaffolding coming down. Not the most inspired building but not the ugliest either, colourwise - at least - it appears to blend in.

Turn round and admire the buildings over on Pinstone Street.

Then, that big, hideous, ugly mess going up under the guise of an office block.

A bloke visiting Sheffield for the first time, whom I was with said to me "When they've finished demolishing that old 1970s bland office-block (pointing to No1 St. Paul's) it'll look wonderful."

I mentioned to him that the building was actually going up, not being demolished. He seriously couldn't take me seriously.

Just before I go, that last comment about the bloke visiting Sheffield is totally fabricated....but that's how I imagine one must feel about the place.

Be honest Sheffield City Council, you really screwed this one up!
