I live on the back of the new estate they are building at Handsworth/Orgreave and every day when I get home there are more massive cracks going up my walls! I'm presuming this is due to the building going on at the bottom of my garden as sometimes when they're digging it feels like the house is shaking!
I'm getting a bit concerned about it now and was wondering if this had happened to anyone else when they were building near them? xxx

It could possibly be partly caused by coal mining subsidence in the area. If so you can claim compensation for repairs from somewhere or other I believe. I know my nan got a brand new drive laid and her kitchen re-tiled at the expense of the coal board when she suffered subsidence. Although how you go about prooving it, and who would pay, is another matter....

It's deffinately something to do with the buidling work, I've never noticed any of the cracks before, and we only decorated 6 months ago so we would have seen them. I have heard some people from Handsworth saying they would never buy one of the houses because of the mining and because so much craps been dumped there over the years. I think it'll get a lot worse before it gets better too, they are not even building as close as they will be to my house yet!

Maybe you should get it checked out by a structural engineer. If it is due to the building work you can claim from the developer. I work for a firm called Eastwood & Partners Consulting Engineers in Nether Edge. We do a lot of similar work. If the developers are working close to your house they should also have issued a party wall notice or similar to warn you of the works.
