Which part of the city are you in, and where's the wedding? It still makes sense to hire people from as local to your house or the venue as possible, to reduce the possible delays from traffic on the day.

I'm at sheffield S25 area, so is the wedding gonna be -- it's about 5~10min drive off J31 of M1.

I don't really want to jut get someone from yellowpage, especially like make-up artist, hairdresser and DJ, personal recommendation is very important to me.

wedding planner ......... tosh.

flowers .... loads of florists around

makeup.....Do it yourself, nobody knows your face like you do, makeup artists usually make you look like a street walker anyway.

Hairdresser .... use your usual, your wedding day is not the day to discover a crap hairdresser!

DJ .......... Ask the room hire people where the reception is, they will recommend one

Jeweler to make wedding rings ......... er ..... buy em ready made!

easy .......... sit back and enjoy your last 5 months of freedom.:)

PA Jewellery on Commonside made both my and the wife's wedding rings. They are great rings.

Edit: And it was cheaper than buying 'off the shelf'. Also you can be individual. I have a seven band Russian ring. You won't find that in a jewellers shop window

I agree with pinklady!

flowers - i did my own (with assistance from mum grandma and bridesmaids (and bridesmaids OH's!!!!)) the flowers were bought from a wholesaler the day before

makeup - i experimented a bit before and did my own on the day

hair - i did my own, no-one else ever knows how to handle it anyway!!!

rings -we got plain rings from a decent jeweller

DJ - we didn't have an evening do, so jsut didn't bother

saves a hell of a lot of money this way too, you can spend that on more important things...like the dress :D

oooh you should have got a wedding planner !!

I agree with Lindsey!

I have a friend who is just starting out as a wedding planner. Because of this, she will do the work for a very, very reasonable price!

I think it depends on what type of wedding you want, but they can be absolutely invaluable. My friend has loads of contacts and can negotiate good prices for you, so her fee will more than pay for itself. Also, it is great having someone there on the day who can take the stress away. I know you will have a bridesmaid to help out, but having someone who does not have a role to play on the day who can make sure everything runs smoothly is great.

Let me know if you want her details, even if it is only to have a chat about whether you think it is the right thing for your wedding or not.

I got married 18 years ago, there wasnt such a thing as a 'wedding planner' then, make up artists were for the very rich only, flowers were ordered from the local flowershop, custom made rings ... again was only for the rich or famous (although we only wanted plain bands anyway), DJ came with the room hire.........

Me too !

Always a good idea - resonable prices too. A lot of people think it's going to be very expensive but it usually works out around 10% of the overall cost of the wedding + expenses.

thanks guys, great response, I've got a very good quote on the flowers since I did the first post, also, lots of good advices -- keep them coming guys, very much appreciated !!!

Myself and a friend are in the process of completing a wedding flowers course and setting up our own business, specialising in flowers for weddings and civil ceromonies. We have already done a couple of weddings, with great feedback from the customers.

We can offer very competitive prices for good, original and traditional designs. If we can help get in touch. We did 20 button holes, bride and grooms corsage for £50.00 at the last wedding.

Good luck witrh the arrangements.

Garretts on Chesterfield Road is excellent for wedding ring/bridesmaid gifts. He made my wifes wedding ring two years ago and it is fantastic. Not only is the service good but the prices are very reasonable also.

I agree about PA Jewellers, we had our rings made there and they're perfect, well mine was made, hubby's was just a plain gold band. Lovely though!

Definately recommend PA jewellery for the rings, they were super helpful when we went along, and v.v. reasonably priced.

If you haven't got a dress yet, if not, I'd highly recommend having a look at an American website Best Bridal Prices (put it into google to find it - not enough posts for links apparently!) Sounds a bit random buying your dress online, but they were absolutely brilliant for me...

I tried on in a shop down south which I fell in love with, got the name of the manufacturer and whacked it into Google and low and behold I found it on this website. The dress down south was £900, tried the same dress on in Pronuptia in Sheffield (£800) but managed to get the dress imported from America with a free pair of shoes (died to match the dress exactly - free of charge), free veil, and a free tiara, including postage, packing and import tax for just under £450!!!! Customer service was brilliant, kept me up to date when the dress was due to arrive and it arrived 2 weeks early in the end! Ended up doing the same with my bridesmaid dresses - they're absolutely stunning and at £200 for three gorgeous full length, adult, heavy satin dresses, pretty darn good value!

If nothing else the website has hundreds and hundreds of dresses to give you some ideas (for the majority of the dress makes you can find a supplier in the UK and try it on somehwere here to check it suits).

I'm still searching for a good DJ for a cheesy evening disco if anyone has any recommendations...

Have you sorted out things like invites/photography/place settings? If not then drop me an email - chris@dasgrafik.com.

Wedding planners aren't essential - your wedding can be as individual as you are, but if you haven't got a lot of time to devote to planning they can be a lifesaver!

And a good professional should always be able to save you more than they cost.

we got our rings from ebay. We've been in a hurry to get things sorted as got engaged in november and the big day is 26th jan.

my dress is from berketex opposite debenhams down the moor and they were lovely in there. They had a deal on so I got a bridesmaid dress free so that saved a bit but my dress cost more than planned!! I'm still waiting for my fittings/alterations so getting nervous. They said it could be a week before.

And yes, you pay the £30 each to have the bands put up at the town hall and got to pay another £260 on the big day, I think it is, for the registrar! I'm in the wrong job! Was funny having a mini game of Mr and Mrs to check we knew about each other and not doing it for illegal reasons!

Best hairdresser going is either Gary or Jane at Well Don Hair Salon at the top of Morthen Road, Wickersley, not sure if they do mobile services but you could always call them and find out - 01709 545 465. Book in well in advance though, they fill up pretty quickly, especially Gary.

about PA Jewellery --

following recommendations from a few members on the forum, I've contact them, told them what i'm looking for, and they've given me a brilliant qoute -- a lot cheaper than certain jeweller in Meadowhall !!! I can't believe it !!

Thanks guys, I still need information on make-up and hair dresser !!! I'm all ears !!!!! Oh, has anybody got 2 size 8 bridesmaids dresses? thinking about pale blue, yellow, or pink....

I agree with the P.A. Jewellery mention, i have had a few lovely things from there! In regard to make up, at the clinique counter in boots meadowhall, if you book a make up lesson, it costs 20 quid, but they give you a twenty pound voucher to spend on products. I went and had it done for a fancy party, i went a few days before and the women showed me looked nice for my complection and then i bought the stuff, and did it myself for the party!

I posted something up before too, cos I was helping a friend out with her wedding.

Another idea on dresses and bridemaid dresses, is to take advantage of the sales now. A lot of decent dresses can be found in Coast. They have a concession counters in most department stores, and also now more individual franchaises in North England.

I went to the York Mcarthurglen outlet, and found a summer dress that I found in Coles before, which I didn't manage to get the right size for. I was surprised that I found more sizes in the franchaise in York. Even the one in Meadowhall didn't have the summer collection any more. So it pays to ring around, or to shop around. It can be stressful, but don't let it out you off though. Try also to get a list of the Coast franchaises, and you can always ring around asking for the right dress. Especially if you know the exact one that you want.

BHS does a good collection of bridal wear too. Easier on getting the right sizes.
