Does anyone know where I can get a catnip plant?

didn't know you could buy the plant. I know you can buy bags of catnip :)

Most decent herb places sell cat nip. Failing that you should be able to buy the seeds from decents stockists.

Most garden centers sell it,
but its called something else, tell them what you want,
I've got a pot full of it growing outside, and my cat loves it.

Most of the toys just have a synthetic spray on them- the real stuff is a lot more fun for them (but there are still cats who either don't care either way about it, and occasionally you'll meet one who vehemently loathes the stuff and will do anything to get away from it).

The species of plant you're looking for, if you want to buy a plant, is Nepeta Cataria. It looks really quite like normal mint, but I really don't actually like the smell if you crush the leaves- my cats disagree with me though.

BTW- if you're planning on growing it, also plan a way of protecting the growing plant in your garden (chicken wire, canes or whatever) or you'll find that cats visit from near and far to chew, lie on and otherwise generally kill the plant before it has a chance to establish itself.

lol medusa, our catmint/catnip got savaged in the garden, its now out of the way in the coldframe!! :)

i like the smell of it personally.

when we first introduced the kits to it they gave it one quick sniff and recoiled in horror (like with orange!!!) so we jsut left it on teh foot stool... lil kit then decided to swipe at it, lots... then rolled in it, then recoiled in horror at the smell, then rolled in it again... then ate it

they now just roll in it and drool a bit :D

oddly enough little kit also does the same with anything thats been cleaned with Flash kitchen bleach spray!!!

Little kittens don't tend to respond to catnip until they hit puberty, since it's thought that the reason they go so potty for catnip is because it's an analogue for one of the cat 'sexy' pheremones.

This could also explain why some cats (especially toms, in my experience) tend to get a bit punch drunk and twitchy, and show us and other cats how big their claws and teeth are, after a few sprigs of catnip.

Think of it as young blokes going out on the lash then scrapping on a Friday night in town.

Pet stores near me sell dried catnip, my cat goes mad for plants that grow near my house though, he likes to roll on them!

i bought cant nip from jollys pet shop (theres one opend at meadowhall retail park i think), its in a box & it has a rectangel plant pot in it that you just water & leave in the light. i dosent take too long to grow, i think i started noticing shoots after 3-4 days. i didnt cost a great deal, few quid.

Thanks everyone will give your suggestions a go. My kitties love the catnip drops I get them from a local pet store so I'm sure they'll love the plant too.

I bought some dried (Armitages) from ebay and our cats found it potent enough. We cant seem to keep a plant, it gets reduced to nothing by our big fat furry!

Meant to say, all the garden centres and supermarkets are now getting seeds in and you can get catnip seeds. Make sure, as Medusa said, that you get the one specifically for cats as there are several. The seed packets are usually marked as being attractive to cats.

One of our cats, a neutered male, goes bonkers after eating catnip.

He loves it, and chases around in a "drunken" stupor.

The other two cats don't care for it. :)

I wonder, what the effect of Home-Made Catnip Wine would be on me? :hihi:

My cat LOVES it - she actually licks the bag and then drools all over it before I even have chance to get it out!!!
